About
Prominently located on Monchsberg hill above the roofs of the old town, the art museum presents contemporary and modern art in one of Salzburg’s most beautiful spots. The starkly modernist structure hosts temporary exhibitions of art with an international appeal and works from the museum’s own collections on three gallery floors.

Unfortunately there was nothing moving about the modern art museum- the reason we were sad was because the staff at the museum were stone faced, surly, arrogant and unwelcoming. The only person who smiled at us was the guy taking the money - he had to otherwise no one would enter! You expect one or two stand out pieces of art to mark the place of any modern art museum worth its salt but it wasn’t the case here. Historic film to video style installations can be interesting but aren’t enough to carry this gallery and a 3D art collection that was literally piled up on shelving did nothing for us. The actual building is amazing and very interesting to be in and the cafe/restaurant had great reviews. A moment with the head waiter confirmed that the restaurant staff had been trained in the same unfriendly way as the other gallery staff and we decided not to pay for any more surliness. Spend your time walking to this spot and enjoying the vistas afforded. Take a look in the restaurant, use the toilet and then keep going! BTW you can reach this spot via elevator and avoid the walk but it will cost you 7.5 euro for a family.

Absolutely unacceptable experience. We went to the museum, paid our entrance fee, went round the museum and there was a lift to leave the building. We took it and were told it was 4 euros per person to be allowed to leave, after we took it. I then asked to use the alternative stairs as we had no way of knowing and more than happy to take the stairs, which they said was only allowed if I paid 2 lift fares that somehow came to 10 euros per person! I then pointed out that the fare advertised on exit (not entry ie not sure you can legally charge someone for using a lift that didn't have an entrance price!) was 2.60euros. Then the insults came. Guys not cause I am an English speaker did I vote for Brexit! In case anyone is reading from the company and cares this was 4 Feb at 4pm. Hope you sort your stuff out.

Dear Michaelcook63, we are sorry for your bad experience with the colleagues from the MönchsbergAufzug, which is not run by the museum but by an external company - the Salzburg AG. The prices for the lift are underneath the button to call the lift, but unfortunately can be overlooked. We forward your complaint to the colleagues from the MönchsbergAufzug since it has to do with them and not with the Museum, or at least you didn't write about your visit. Once again, we are sorry for the bad experience. Sincerely, the Museum der Moderne Salzburg

Rainy day in Salzburg and we had a Salzburg card so thought we’d visit as was included in the card. We weren’t expecting the Tate but imagined there would be something vaguely interesting to look at and get us out of the rain for an hour or so. In hindsight, we’d take an hour in the rain over this museum. Firstly the mandatory lift to the museum, which oddly enough is advertised as it’s own attraction when it is literally a grotty lift in the middle of the stairwell, similar to those found at any building ever. Thankfully this was included in the Salzburg card, as it would be nothing short of outrageous to have to pay nearly €5 for the pleasure of being transported from A to B. Secondly, as other reviewers have commented the staff at the museum were quite short and oddly commanding about which personal belongings (I.e. no bags allowed) could be taken into the museum. We could not understand any reasoning why we could not take our bags into such a quiet museum. We were fairly unimpressed with the ground floor exhibition and looked forward to seeing what else the museum had to offer when we realised that floors 2 and 3 (66% of the museum) had been closed. Meaning the unimpressive first exhibition was actually the ONLY exhibition we could see that day. Why they felt it necessary to close both floors at once is another question entirely. This was not advertised upon entering the museum but only after guests would already have paid full price for entry. Overall we spent more time faffing with our belongings in the ridiculously expansive locker room than we did in the museum itself. Clean and adequate toilet facilities were the highlight of our trip. Overall unless you enjoy being confused and disappointed we would recommend avoiding this museum at all costs.

The Mönchsberg elevator in the pink house takes you to the museum on the Winkler terrace. This is also one of the filming locations of The Sound of Music. Combi ticket elevator + museum costs €10. The museum is of the kind with weird art, love it or not. I didn't, so it was a quick in and out. We did the because it was raining and included in the Salzburg Card, I am glad I didn't pay €10 for it.

The one star is because the staff was so rude. We unintentionally entered the museum as the signs for it were very confusing and we do not speak German. In order to exit, we were directed to take an elevator down a floor, which we did immediately. Although we never even entered the exhibit area - staff refused to allow us to exit without paying 3 Euro each for the use of the elevator!

This was the oddest museum visit I ever had in my life (and there are plenty of visits from over 60 years). This museum is divided between two buildings, but there is a combined ticket for both of them. So we purchased the tickets for everything. I put my bag in a storage box and off we went to enjoy the exhibitions. After the first building's art was examined, we decided to see the second one. For that, we were advised to go to the ground floor of the first building. Having done that, I thought it would after all be best to collect my bag from the box, as the second building apparenty was some elsewhere. So I tried to enter the museum again for that purpose, but the automatic entrance control showed red - no entrance. I went to the cashier to explain the problem, and he asked why I left the bag upstairs. Well, I replied, I thought I would collect it afterwards, is it not logical? The cashier then went on saying that I should pay the ticket again for entering the entrance control. I refused, since I had alreay paid once. After some heated discussion, this fellow, who seemed to enjoy the situation I, opened the gate and so I was able to collect my bag. After all this, I was so upset, that I totally abandoned the visit for the second building. Two things: 1) This was a modern art museum, not Fort Knox. So why the heck all the exaggerated security systems! This is the first museum in the world where putting your nose out from the building means your ticket would no longer be valid. 2) The instructions about the museum and how to get in the different parts of it were totally missing. How can you run a museum as difficult technically as this, without preparing an exhaustive guidence to the guests how to enter different parts of the museum. Well, go in Moderne Monchberg and you'll see (read: do not go, please).

They want 5 euro for using elevator.
Doesnt matter if you want visit their museum or not, you have to pay.
We were on walk around museum on the hill and when you want to go into the city you need to use elevator in museum.
Absolutly terrible experience with personal. We were 2 adults with 5 months child.

On the basis of a single visit, I would say that the fabulous building was more impressive than the exhibits.

A bit like the V&A northern branch in Dundee (see separate review).

Very helpful staff. On two occasions I was given literature which they felt I had missed out on.

And not having change for the Lockers - just £1 sterling - they happily changed a €20 to give me the required €3 in change.

But do visit and come more than once.

We went to this last minute after eating breakfast in a nearby cafe and mainly only came up for the views of the old town, which were the best in Salzburg. The museum itself was completely under-rated, filled with interesting and compelling works of art. I live in London and we have plenty of art museums here, but this was place was extremely impressive. All of the exhibits were great.

After entering the building by mistake we were forced to pay €3 euros each before leaving?? This isn’t even the price of a museum ticket. I know this doesn’t sound like a lot but we are back packers and don’t have alot of money. We didn’t even enter the actually museum. The staff just wanted to take our money off us and get us out. Don’t even go in unless you plan to pay…
