An unplanned first timer climb to the the summit on a changing weather after our lunch. Truly Austrian views as in " Sound of Music " as you hike. Halfway through the hiking, thick clouds hovered our way. Feeling like immersed in the cloud with a meter visibility walk. I almost give up.Perseverance paid -off after a 2.5 hours ascent. Upon reaching the top at 2167 meters, the clouds lifted up. The most beautiful, stunning panoramic 360 degrees views unfolded before my eyes. The clouds seemingly were beneath my feet. Wow, almost a ladder-away to heaven. Magical horizon where mountains curvatures added breathtaking views. There are 2 pilgrimages churches considered the highest in Austria's Eastern Alps. The German built Church " Maria am Stein " and Wendisch Chapel " Mariahimmelfart " (Assumption). A Cross on the highest point is a nice symbol. Cows and donkeys around. There is a restaurant with accommodation. Food is good. Next to it is a huge TV tower. Descending was awesome with blue skies, green, green hills, lakes at a distance, villach city from above. Just a lovely place for mountain hiking even for beginners. A good mountain shoes is advisable though. An entrance fee of 18. euro for our car to enter this park. This is a recommendable park when one is in Villach, Austria. Spend a day or even an overnight to experience nature's beauty from sunrise to sunset. A good weather is a plus factor. A bucket-list checked ! Hope to be back !

Really with visiting! We went up there with a car, which was a bit costly, but worth it and good alternative if you have limited time or some other restraint. To the top it took us 2 hours and the view was amazing.

Dobratsch Nature Park is accessible from parking P11 at the end of the Villacher Alpenstrasse. You can walk to the viewing platform or to the summit of the Dobratch, where a small church and a restaurant can be visited. We chose to limit our walk to the artificial viewing platform. But anyway, bring sturdy shoes, because the foot paths are covered with loose stones; a stumble or a sprained ankle is just round the corner. The walk leads along splendid nature and quiet spots. See my pictures I added to this review. Disappointing were the many free running dogs. At the start of the path into the Dobratch Nature Park, on many places and many message boards, dog owners are instructed and pressed again to keep their dog(s) on a leash, otherwise animals may be disturbed (and human beings as well, seeing some fierce dogs on the loose). Hopefully the "dogs on the leash" rule will be actively upheld by the authorities in the near future with appropriate fines. But apart from this dog scare, time at the Dobratch Nature Park is well spent.

This is a family-friendly hike to just over 2000m. There are a couple of possible routes: One takes you up the main path; a wide gravel path where you'll most likely meet people regularly along the way. The other takes you round the south face of the mountain and is a little longer and rougher terrain. The prize of the second route, though, is the amazing views over the Alps.
There is a cafe at the top (yes, it's a pretty tourist-friendly affair) which is a welcome addition as you take in the views over the region.
Going up the main path takes up to 1.5 hours at a normal pace, the other is a little over 2 hours. Standard deviation is pretty big depending on your pace :)
Do it, it's worth it.

Depending on the shape you are in, the hike to the summit is about an hour and a half long from P11 Rosstratte.
There's a beautiful Cliffside path. It's not for those who are afraid of heights. You start by going by beautiful art sculptures that represent earth, air, fire and water. There are terrific views of the Dreiecke (three corners) where Slovenia, Italy and Austria meet. Some places on the path seem to be only a foot and a half wide, there is also a little scrambling over rocky areas. But if you have the time to go slow, aren't afraid of heights, it's manageable at any fitness level (I had a very in vs dive surgery in the past six months and was able to do it in under 2 hours). I would imagine it's even more fun if you are fit and enjoy heights!
For North Americans, don't be surprised to be passed on the trail by very fit 70-80 year olds!
At the top, treat yourself to a traditional meal - beer, bratwurst, cake / coffee.
The trip down on the jeep trail offers beautiful views of the nearby lake and town of Villach.
Cows and donkeys are seen grazing. Signs of other wildlife are everywhere. Lots of birds!

Beautiful nature park with a foot path going all the way to to the peak. Also suitable for unexperienced tourists.
Amazing soup and strudel in the cottage at an altitude of 1730m.

Nice area of Austria. Large mountains of Austria Slovenia Italy. If you like walking this is the place to come. On the top is a very old church. A new cafe with rooms to rent. Other places to ester lower down. Nice place to eat with super bored is located in the parking area of the most top area. Good food restrooms and parking. Area with signs of all the mountains with information. Large seats to set on and enjoy the view and sunshine. You meet lots of people from others countries You have to check on the weather before you to make sure you can drive up. If you want you can walk or bike cycle up.

Ideal for hiking in hot summer days. The path is quite easy, so it's not a problem to go with small children. In winter there is heaven. And the air is always clear!

This is a fabulous attraction with stunning views of Austria, Slovenia, and Italy. The Southern trail to the top follows the face of the cliff and offers beautiful views of Italy. It is steep and rocky in many places and requires care when crossing rockslides. Taking this trail to the top took us 2 hours. There is a restaurant at the top offering drinks and some food. The church at the top is beautiful and worth the extra climb. We took the Northern trail down...much easier, wider, and faster! It took an hour to walk back down. This is a must see attraction in the mountains surrounding Villach, Austria!

Is this accessible without a car? We are thinking of stopping here in late April between Salzburg and Venice. Is this area good in spring? Can we get to the outdoors without a car? We love to hike and explore. Family of 5 with 3 kids aged 9-13
