Incredible man, nicely designed museum
May 2018 • Friends
it was a surprise stop organized by one member from our international group of old friends - so our first reaction was "what on earth this budist pilgrimage route climbing the metal steps next to a high stone slope accross the road from the museum is doing here"?! Well, it was clear as soon as we have seen the name of the museum - Harrer, a controversial man, geographer and sportsman, great explorer and many more things for which we all admired him already since our youth. Take your time to read the texts carefully (get also the text from the kind lady in the coffeeshop). Already the CV close to the entrance is so incredibly full that may take you some time to realize it is all about a single man! Some of the items in the museum are his inventions - do not miss. Enjoy the rich photo documentation, items from his explorations, and items demonstrating his friendship with Dalai Lama Tenzin Gyatso all the time since Harrer's years in Tibet. Impressive museum!

Very interesting!
Aug 2015 • Couples
We only knew Harrer from the famous movie and we found very interesting to learn something more about this explorer-athlete-mountaineer-geographer from the huge collection of objects and photographs Harrer brought back from his world travels and expeditions in remote regions.
There are information available in every language at the entrance counter.
It is rather expensive (13.50€), it’s better to buy Karnten Card (with which the entrance is free) and use it to visit for free other places in lovely Carinthia!

Seven years in Tibet and more...
Aug 2013 • Family
The museum starts with a short introduction on the person Heinrich Harrer. Where he was born, where he grew up, his sports career and - of course - his mountaineering adventures. The collection shows the equipment used at that time for climbing mountains. Lot's of newspaper pages can be read about Heinrich fleeing to India and trying to escape to Tibet.
A complete floor is dedicated to Tibet, and his live there, described in the book 'Seven years in Tibet'. H.h. the Dalai Lama himself came to open the museum.
Other rooms shows the other journeys Heinrich has made, Africa, South America and Indonesia included.
Across the road, outside of the museum, there is a Lingkor. Due to the possibility of falling rocks this stairclimb along Tibetan symbols was closed during our visit.
All in all an interesting journey showing the live of Heinrich Harrer.
When in the neighborhood and interested in the live of Heinrich Harrer, a 'must visit'.
