I really like this lake and whenever it fits in, I come by to take a swim. I mean what's not to like? Great view, refreshing temperature and good water quality. The only minus is that on many days it's badly overcrowded, especially on warm weekend days when it is hard to find a parking space anywhere nearby. On such days I sometimes go to one of the smaller lakes in the surrounding to avoid the crowds.

While on holiday with Leger Holidays, my wife and I opted out of a days planned excursion, and visited Attersee instead. Considering it was only 10 minutes by train from St Georgen im Attergau where we staying, and the holiday being in the Austrian Lakes, it was surprising that despite being one of Austria's largest lakes it was not included in the Leger itinerary. Glad we made the decision, would not have missed it for the world.
Arriving at Attersee's railway station, the lake is a short walk away, we had a coffee while we waited for the lake cruise boat to arrive. We went on a 2hr 35mins circular tour of the South (Sud) Lake, the weather was perfect, so the views were spectacular, especially the imposing Schaffberg at the southern end of the lake.
There are drink, food and toilet facilities available on board.
After disembarking, we had a meal at one of the many lakeside restaurants before having an hour just sitting and relaxing. and the catching the train back

If i had to take ONE picture--from the 9,000 I took while in Austria--and turn it into a postcard, THIS may be it!
It. Is. Amazing!
We rented a car (in Vienna) to drive towards Salzburg and into Germany (to see the Eagle's Nest) and stopped at Attersee on the way home.... i have NEVER seen an inland lake so turqoise (like the mediterranean or carribean) in my life. The mountains... the WATER.... the views. There's a fantastic (pay) beach area right in town--complete with changing rooms, water slide, docks, wading pool, etc. We weren't able to stay for long but it may have been the most magical place I'd ever been. Quiet, quaint, absolutely picturesque. It's alpine water, so it's gonna be REFRESHING, but it's SO clean and SO blue and it was absolutely totally worth the stop.
If you can't stop here, i'd recommend ANY of the "lake-towns" along the way! Take an afternoon rest! Take a swim! get some food! RELAX!

My visit to Lake Attersee was a blissful experience. The astonishing view was matched by the most enjoyable swim in the lake. The water was perfect, warm and calm in the summer months. Topping up the experience was the stay at the villa on the invitation of Madam Waldheim, the former First Lady of Austria. She was most kind and her villa provided an experience that was truly out of this world. A world of wisdom over an afternoon tea overlooking the crystal clear lake receding into the mountains with haloed clouds. This is what I would call unforgettable experience.

It is impossible to describe the beauty of this place. Crystal blue water, surrounded by the Alps. I sat by the side of the lake sipping a beer, and later took a boat ride for about an hour on the lake. An incredible time!

We visited the lake in August, and regretted the decision. Parking is very difficult around the lake and costly at times. There is a free car park in Kammer Am Attersee next to the police station, but get there early it gets full quickly. Compared with the rest of Austria this area appears significantly more expensive than the rest. The lake itself is ok to swim in and said to be the warmest of all the lakes but it can be difficult to get to it. You can hire boats on the lake. We would suggest visiting some of the slightly smaller lakes that are close to Attersee instead.

It's a huge 25 kms long lake with great views of the mountains and one can just walk around or swim in the lake. Views are breathtaking.

We were to stay in a hotel, but had to change our plans. Still decided we could not give it a miss. Stopped on route to Salzburg. A beautiful lake! not so many tourists. Gorgeous views. Had a lovely meal at the fish restaurant.

Absolutely superb. Not invaded by tourists. Excellent bike routes that take you to little villages, hospitable and accessible. The lake to visit during summer time. The water is so clean you can swim at your heart' length, width and sake. A gorgeous vacation day. Riding on the main road circling the lake is also an option, it is not traffic clogged but the suggested trails are well posted and take you to breathtaking places.

It is a very nice place that can be reached by car or walking down. Coming by car, leave A1 to Attersee (Attersee Ausfahrt) and follow direction Palmsdorf - Abtsdorf - Wildenhag. About two km from Wildenhag you will find the chapel on the left side. In my opinion, the best starting point for walking down trip is Wildenhag, because Kronberg is a good starting point for the Westwanderweg that lasts for about 5 to 6 h till Unterach (walking down only, and you can come back to Attersee by boat - look to the timetable for the last).
The Kronberg chapel built in the late Gothic style is small but impressive in the context of natural surroundings. A short story of the chapel and area is provided outside (in German only). Details on Kronberg chapel could be found at www.oberostereich.at/kronberg-hill.html. The chapel dates from 1972 and the tower was built in 1885. In the actual form, it was finished in 1960's.
Close to the chapel there is a resting place where from opens a beautiful landscape to Nord Attersee, Attergau, Buchberg, Hollengebirge and Traunstein in the background. It is a very quiet and peaceful place and only a low noise from A1 highway disturbs somehow the silence of Austrian mountains.
The trip lasts less than one hour by car from Attersee City. Strongly recommended: sunny day and sunset. Tip 1: Buchberg is not so close as it appears; it's better to "attack it" directly from Attersee City. Tip 2: if you plan to continue on Westwanderweg, you have to be at Kronberg chapel in the morning; sunrise is OK, but the alternative is to take the first boat to Unterach and you have enough time to be at Kronberg chapel in the evening. I am sure you will like the last proposal.
