A market place full of little kiosks and busy. In the heart of the old town. Not a must to see but actually you can’t avoid it either

Hauptplatz, the city square is the lifeblood of the city. Everything is happening here. It is surrounded with beautiful buildings that evoke a wonderful atmosphere. Graz was an important trading center and fairs took place in this square, and meet people. This is still happening today. At the main square in Graz do not meet only the most diverse people, but also the different periods, hints of the Middle Ages, traces of the Renaissance and modern times. Lovely place with lots of shops, restaurants/cafes, food carts/stalls, interesting architecture.
The Hauptplatz was built in the Middle Ages and has since been the center of life in Graz. Even today, the best stores are in the vicinity of the square. There is also the seat of the mayor and the rest of the city administration - the City Hall. There are plenty of great kiosks selling very tasty sausages, which contribute to the good atmosphere of the place. From this place is great transport connections. We enjoyed every moment.

In the middle of the Altstadt yu can find this beautiful square. If you go there during the winter, you can even find some remaining parts of Christmas Market.

As Christmas markets go, this one on the Hauptplatz left a lot to be desired. Not a lot of vendors/stalls and the ones there were crammed into too small of a space. Mostly food stalls but the snowy, rainy weather with icy/slushy conditions put a damper on what could have been a better experience. Would skip Graz next time traveling thru Austria for the Christmas festivities.

It’s the throbbing heart 💓 of Graz yet there’s still a calmness to it.
The imposing buildings are extremely well kept.
A real little gem.
Highly recommended.

One can get any sort of public transport from this place to any part of the city. Trams, Buses,Taxis even bicycles. Opera is very close by and almost at a walking distance from the city center. An open sit out place nearby with benches and fountain.

The Hauptplatz is the city center or downtown Graz. An excellent area that combines modernity and ancient traditional architecture. This area has great brand stores, eateries, historical churches, chestnut sellers (!), cafes, uber restaurants, offices, shops and marts.
The buildings in this area are old but have been remade and modernised. The cobbled pathways around the place show the Victorian era of Europe.
Do not mistake the small alleys as rubbish. These alleys have the best bars, cafes and restaurants tucked in them. Every shop has glass show cases in these alleys and walking through any of them will give you ample opportunity to do an overdose of window shopping!
The Hauptplatz is definitely a place one should visit. But be aware, leaving aside restaurants and pubs, all shops shut down at 7pm. Sundays are a big no-no as everything is shut through the day. You will also get to catch the tram services that run around in Graz from the main square. Watch the timings in case you are interested in shopping.

The Hauptplatz (main square) is one of the nicest places in the old city of Graz. The buildings are rehabilitated and the architecture is very beautiful. A landmark of the square is the monumental fountain dedicated to the Archduke John of Austria, the "moderniser of Graz". Also the Hauptplatz is like a meeting point for the locals. We saw here a lot of groups of young people and the atmosphere was very friendly. You can get here by foot or by tram (1,3,4,5,6,7,13), because it is a station right in the square.

Everytime I come here, I feel Graz. . . the beautiful facades, the pulse of the city. . . and there's often something happening here or nearby. Grab a coffee, poke into a shop, or explore one of the extending alleys and side streets.
