Built in the second quarter of the 15th century, the former palace church of the princes and then archdukes of Austria became, in the 18th century and under the patronage of Saint Ægidius (St Gilles), the cathedral of the city of Graz.
From its first century, it retains elegant Gothic vaults and a large fresco of [the unmissable] Saint Christopher.
Concerning the furniture, essentially Baroque, you can linger in front of the large high altar, the pulpit, the cabinetmaker's work on the benches or the ironwork of the closing grilles of the side chapels.
Older in construction, we particularly notice two old wedding chests (end of the 15th century) used, reused, as reliquaries and placed on each side of the choir.
In dark wood, they have retained their original decor, in bone and ivory, inspired by the "Triumphs" of the Tuscan poet Petrarch.
We thus recognize the representations of the chariot of fame pulled by elephants (in proverbial memory) and accompanied by illustrious warriors (including Samson, Hercules or Judith), of that of time, pulled by deer and flanked by a procession of old men, that of love, that of chastity, drawn by unicorns, that of death, drawn by buffaloes and, finally, that of the triumph of God (with the 4 living ones), drawn by angels and accompanied by a crowd of saints (including John the Baptist, Bartholomew and Simon of Cyrene).
Also note, outside, the monument to the dead of the First World War and the fresco of the scourges of God.

Very peaceful and quiet inside (as it should be). Beautiful architecture. Was open (and free to enter) on a Saturday afternoon in March. Nothing mind-blowing, but a nice place to check out if you're in the area and into churches and/or nice architecture and/or a quiet place.

While walking we also passed by the Cathedral Church of St. Aegidius in Graz. Since the entrance is free, we went in and looked at it. It is open from 7:00 a.m. to 7:45 p.m. during the week and from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on weekends.

Domkirche is a baroque/gothic cathedral from the 15th century. It is located in the center of Graz. Graz is second biggest city in Austria and there is so much history there to explore. The inside of the church has a beautiful and eye dropping interior. The mausoleum is also worth visiting.

A visit to the cathedral in Graz belongs on the to-do list. The cathedral is a very interesting church with a beautiful altar front. The cathedral is located right next to the Mausoleum in Graz. No entrance fee was charged on my day of visit. Very worth seeing.

Located right next to the Mausoleum and very close to the stair tower deserves a quick visit. Outside beautiful fresco representing the 3 evils that struck the city. Inside 2 beautiful reliquary chests.

The cathedral (Domkirche) in Graz is magnificent. The Cathedral is a mix of Gothic and Baroque style. It was built at the time Graz was the seat of Emperor Frederick III, in the 15th century. Graz Cathedral is dedicated to Saint Giles. It is the seat of the bishop of the Steiermark diocese. The exterior of the cathedral looks very sober today. In the Gothic period, however, the facades were covered with paintings. One cool has been preserved, the so-called Gottesplagenbild ('God's Plagues'). Marks the terrible plague of the late 15th century. Since it was considered to be the plague of God's punishment, the fresco displays a plea for forgiveness and reconciliation.
The frescoes in the church date from the times of Emperor Frederick III. Among them: a fragment showing St. Christopher, clearly recognizable as Frederick wearing the Styrian ducal crown. The interior of the church is richly decorated and full of beautiful paintings.
It feels good energy and the atmosphere is pleasant.

This is a beautiful cathedral. I was actually shocked it was free to go inside as most cities would charge for entry. I was never there when the mausoleum was open, but I saw everything else, and it was lovely.

Beautiful church, definitely worth a visit! Interesting to compare it to the style of churches in Vienna, as well as to those in Italy, which are of course the ultimate model.

A relatively small cathedral but the baroque interior is quite impressive. We went for the Sunday mass and spent another 30 minutes in there afterwards. Don't miss the paintings on the south side.
