This is Manaco’s old town, situated atop a hill - adjacent to the Prince’s Palace. The area is full of narrow, winding streets. There are plenty of cafes, restaurants and boutiques. The views overlooking Monaco and Port Hercules are incredible. Not far from the Oceanographic Museum are the ‘apartments’ of several Royal Family members. Be sure to visit the Monaco Cathedral while you’re up here. The walk up is definitely a work out. Otherwise, buses ply the area.

IF you like the sound of jack hammers, the smell of car fumes, and the lack of greenery or of architectural merit of the majority of buildings, then perhaps you will LOVE Monaco. I found it utterly pointless and dull. Even the Monte Carlo casino was beseiged by construction and noise and ....oh what's the point. It is not of any interest to me. The bus trip back to Nice was fun- hang on tight!

We went to Monaco on a day trip during our beach stay in the Nice area. We were prepared for huge crowds, ridiculously expensive parking, and a big city atmosphere...but no, Monaco was so easy to drive in and out of, the parking was plentiful, inexpensive, and so conveniently located. We opted to park in "the Rock" area, as we were more interested in seeing Monaco-Ville and not so much Monte Carlo and the casino. We had a delicious lunch at La Tavernetta, walked through some beautiful narrow lanes, saw beautiful buildings all painted in a variety of pastel and other pretty colors. The flowers and gardens were gorgeous and the views of the sea from this cliff-top town were dramatic and unspoiled. We opted to stay outdoors in the beautiful weather but enjoyed seeing the palace with guard, cathedral, Cousteau museum from the outside. Monaco appealed to our whole family -- the beauty and cleanliness of this fairy-tale city, the story of the royal family starting with Grimaldi and including actress Grace Kelly, the fancy boats and cars (our rental car was the only Ford we saw!). All in all, a great day that exceeded our expectations.

As Monaco is so much known because of its Formula 1 Grand Prix Racing track in the mid-May, it is surely a must to walk around the F1 track for all who like moto sports, especially Formula 1 fans. But Monaco is not just a city around this track, it is much more interesting because it is a part of a tiny country where nearly all people are employed and where it is a principality. It also has many great attractions such as Prince's Palace, Casino, Cathedral of St. Nicholas (where you find also the tomb of Grace Kelly), tiny state parliament, Justice Palace and, of course, very-wide known and my favourite Oceanographic Museum where it is not just aquarium but also a place with very good marine collection, bathyscaphe and historic submarine. Therefore, it was very excited to visit it and I was that much or even more satisfied on the end as I was when I visited the Oceanarium in Lisbon.

Although the majority of residents are rich and live there to avoid high taxes in their country, prices in the Monaco-Ville are not that high as one could think because of that. In that case, I see Monte Carlo around Casino and Loews turn of the F1 track more expensive. As the sun goes down, there are many parties in the Monte Carlo part, so it is something there for all visitors in this city.

Let's be honest, a tin go magnolia paint, a tin of terracotta paint old castle, and plenty of street cleaners and you have the fantasy that is Monaco. The old town is great for 5 minutes if you like tatty souvenir shops and a view of what rambles a Bangkok council estate. If it weren't for the fact that they were setting up the Grand Prix, there would be absolutely nothing of interest for more than half an hour. Flashy cars, big yachts and not a lot else. TGV ride back to Nice was the Monaco highlight

Not having been to Monaco for years we were looking forward to our visit. The old town was recommended as a must but what a disappointment. Yes, there is the prince' s palace and a beautiful cathedral but the rest was as touristy as it comes. Nothing but shops with t-shirts, handbags, caps with Monaco printed on it for sale. One or the other didn't make any difference. No quaint little shops with something else to offer, no galleries, boutiques or anything that would make it more interesting. The Oceanographic museum and aquarium is not bad but if you have once been to Seaworld or a beautiful aquarium as Singapore has to offer, it really is all old stuff and old school. I wouldn't go again. And if you can't walk very well, there are many many stairs and only very few lifts or escalators.

We stayed in Nice and jumped the 100 bus to Monaco for the day. We started off at the casino and wandered through the harvbour and eventually up to the old town. It really is very pretty, you can just wander about the gardens and the view from up there is truly spectacular! We viisted the cathedral where Grace Kelly was married and is now buried and the Palace itself. Well worth the hike up there.

Monaco is great for a day trip from Nice. I was flushed enough to splash out a one way Heli-Air helicopter flight to the pricipality. You should do it. With being based in Nice I got the bus (4 euros) back to the airport and then checked in for my flight and paid around 110 euros one way. Quite a lot of money but it was for me a one off experience and I won't forget it. I was lucky enough to get seated next to the pilot and the sweeping view of Nice, Cannes, Villefrance, Beaulieu, Cap Ferrat and Monaco was spectacular. You are then whisked to the port by a blacked out mini-bus.

The obvious eye opener is the huge boats berthed in the marina but I've seen better boats docked in Antibes. Walking from the port towards the tunnel immediately has you having flashbacks of watching F1 on the t.v. Keep walking and you can, like I did, spend the afternoon on the beach. Its not busy despite my visit (third over the years) in mid September 2012. The back street bakeries and cafes, north of the port a few streets back, are the places to go for eats if you don't want to pay port prices. Prices are similar to Nice and Cannes.

Get the train when you are leaving and if heading towards Nice sit on the left hand side of it and you will have great views of the sea and the very desirable homes that hug the coastline.

Everyone visiting Monaco comes to "the Rock" (aka Monaco Ville or Monte Carlo) for a very good reason. This is (what's left of) the real "small but beautiful" Principailty! Century old buildings abound, peaceful quaint little streets everywhere, the prince's palace (open to the public), 25 nice restaurants and 40 shops to choose from and lovely views all around. Take bus 1 or 2 to "Monaco Ville" (terminus) and then go to the Musée Océanographique, wander through the park (offering breathtaking views over Fontvielle and Cap d'Ail) to the Palace (changing of the guards at 11.45 daily), continue on the other side ,overlooking the Port Hercule. If you come by car: take parking "des Pecheurs" and then follow signs "Palace/Musées". Elevators will bring you just next to the Oceanographic Museum. I live here so... trust me!
