About
Trek through the narrow rock walls and soak in the breathtaking scenery of Avakas Gorge. Be prepared to climb over some big rocks and step carefully on slippery stones as the gorge gets narrower. You might even spot mountain goats along the way. The best time to visit is during the spring when the wildflowers are in bloom. Avakas Gorge is also less than 15 miles from Paphos, making it a fantastic day trip from the city. When you're done exploring the canyon, head over to nearby Lara Beach for some well-deserved rest and relaxation. – Tripadvisor

Lovely, cool, shaded hike near Paphos
We kind of stumbled upon 'Avakas Gorge' while coming down the hill towards the coast, and it was a very happy diversion. We were aiming for Lara Beach area and ended up seeing the sign for Avakas, which was also on our radar, do we went. A bit of a slow, bouncy, dusty road (for 20 minutes) and we were at the carpark. Bathroom break, laced up, and 2 minutes later we were hiking! The first 5-10 minutes is flat, open, wide welcoming trail, but then you enter the gorge. It can be very slippery and wet, but when we hiked it there was a small, trickling river, few people, and cool, comforting shade. Definitely worth a visit!

Avakas Gorge - Spectacular 3-4km walk along the floor of the gorge
This was a complete surprise as we had gone to eat at the Last Castle restaurant a further 400m along the road. If we hadn’t have walked we may have missed the entry turning. After about half a kilometre of walking along a path you are then able to follow the floor of the gorge for a further kilometre with breathtaking views of the upper Gorge walls and the effect of the water of thousands of years. We even saw a wild mountain goat - an added bonus. Such a lovely way to spend an hour or two out of the heat of the sun as you are mostly in the shade. Fantastic experience

Get there before the Jeep tours arrive at 10am
Not the easiest place to find but partly through luck with drove up and parked at the end of the tarmac road by the small church previous reviews mention. The dirt road after that wasn't too bad, but with a small wheeled hire car we thought best not to take it further (you're not insured if you do remember). It was then a 15min walk downhill to the carpark area where the gorge walk starts and another ten to reach the more spectacular section which is well worth the effort. We got into it around 9am and had the place to ourselves. Fantastic experience. We returned back the same way once we reached the far side of the narrow section (600metres?) . By now 30+ folk were piling in from several Jeep tours and it was 10:15am. TOP TIP: Use trekking sandals with which you can happily wade in shallow water for more fun. Most folk we saw were trying to get through in trainers without getting them wet! which can't have been easy.

    Fun walk up a gorge
Fun gorge walk a short drive from Paphos. Really enjoyed this moderately challenging gorge walk, which has some cool narrow canyons. We were with our 8 year old and it took us about two hours each way. First walking up the gorge from the parking and then back down, after a picnic at the top. There's a lot of scrambling over rocks and crisscrossing the river, so expect to get your shoes a bit wet/wear shoes that aren't going to become too slippery. We were normal trainers, but wished we'd had our trail shoes. Once you reach the top plateau you can choose to carry on further up hill and also, you can take a circular route that brings you back to the car park via a different route. We did this in December and it was comfortable even in the middle of the day. If you're in Cyprus in the summer months I'd strongly recommend you start as early as possible, as I can imagine the heat becoming unbearable. Also, I wouldn't do this after heavy rains as I can imagine there's a high risk of the gorge flooding.

    Great little hike
We ended up taking the 2km walk in along the coast - the other route was much, much closer but we would have missed a great walk in along the coast. At the car park close to the trailhead there were a mixture of enduro style motorcycles, Land Rovers and small hire cars and a lone e-bike. Rock scrambles were fine - rocks are slippery, wear some decent footwear and take your time. For more experienced hikers, don't expect trail etiquette to be the norm.

    Lovely hike
Beautiful gorge when you can hike for as long as you like and as hard as you like. From the parking into the gorge is about half an hour, but you can continue after into more rocky territory. Personally walked an hour into thr gorge and an hour back. Make sure you wear good hiking shoes, there can be water and some stones are very slippy.

So we did this trail during our trip to Cyprus, I'm 65 with a dodgy knee & my husband is 68, but we are both fairly fit & walk regularly.

We parked in the first car park at the bottom, it took us 20 minutes to reach the picnic/toilet area with tour jeeps passing fairly regularly & kicking up clouds if dust. We probably could have driven further along the dirt road but didn't want to risk it. There is actually a lovely flat path that goes through a garden/valley area just on the right of the track up to the gorge which in hindsight we wished we had taken.

It was very busy today with younger people rushing along. It is quite slippy & at one point I told my husband I wasn't really enjoying it but I was determined to make it at least to the point where the large boulder sits across the gorge. As we continued my confidence grew & we actually made it to the point where the path continues steeply uphill before we turned around. My husband & some very nice people helped me on two occasions which involved a very large step up, difficult for me with my dodgy knee.

We both wore sensible walking sandals/shoes & took walking poles. I only got my foot wet once when I slipped slightly. I did enjoy the walk, it is very pretty but you do need to take care.

This was an excellent trip, though we didn't manage to go through the whole gorge (not enough time). First, I'd like to encourage all those who travel in Cyprus by bus. We made it by bus and by foot! We started from Paphos to Coral Bay with the bus 615 around 10:30 am, and next 616 to Agios Georgios Pegeias. We asked the driver to drop us off on the way to gorge. And the way was amazing! It goes along the coast, though in the distance of several hundred meters from it, but gives fantastic views. It took us ca. 55 min to reach the way to gorge and we weren't in a rush. Then, there are several minutes of marching to the last point where the cars can be parked and, finally, we started the direct hiking to gorge. It was February, just after heavy rain the day before, so the gorge was filled with water. I took my shoes off and continue barefoot. Oh, it was so much fun! Though, appropriate shoes are highly advised here. Especially in Summer due to vipers.
We didn't have enough time to walk the whole gorge but we still had the chance to admire its stunning and rocky beauty. And we made it to the last bus to Coral Bay at 5 pm in Agios Georgios Pegeias. I still have these gorgeous views in my mind.

Cycled from Paphos to the Gorge. Sadly the restaurant at the entrance was closed (although google suggested it was open) so we had no food for the hike. Luckily there was a kiosk about 1km back the road that provided some icecream and fizzy drinks and a couple of complentary clementines. Parked the bikes at the start of the hike and there are clean bathrooms and drinking water there which was a pleasant surprise. The gorge is beautiful. The rocks were a little slimy, perhaps the time of year so correct food wear would be recommended to avoid slipping. Easy hike. Excellent photo opportunities. Highly recommend.

Booked this as a half day trip. The drive there was ace, driver casually bombing over the dirt roads with expertise. The hike to the gorge was reminiscent of an Indiana Jones film 😂. Our guide was lovely and funny and despite doing this trip 4 times a day still made it feel unique. I loved every min. Finished off with a drive to Lara Beach for a drink and a snack which was perfect. Wear comfy shoes and take water. It's not a long hike but extremely hot and dry. A lovely side to paphos in cj trast to shops and bars. Recommended.

We were lucky to visited during lockdown in January. This meant we had to gorged herself. It is better to go sometime after 10 am so when the Sun is directly overhead the light spills into the court itself. However you need to be aware that if it has rained in the day or two before your visit is unlikely you’ll be able to get far up the gorge as it will have flooded. You should be prepared to get your feet wet in places you need to actually climb over rather large boulders which are in the way. It can be narrow in places and what I imagine is that during peak season it might be a bit of a nightmare with tourists. The walk from the parking place to the entrance of the coach is approximately 1 mile across a field there are toilets towards the entrance and a car park there as well.

Such a beautiful hike, filled with natural beauty. It was easy to find (I parked in the car park near the beach to avoid the dirt road) and well signed. As it was August when I visited I went very early and I am so glad I did, I had the gorge to myself, and was only passed by herds of goats and countless lizards! I hiked the length of the gorge, and on my way back it was far busier with many tourist groups. Definitely worth the trip, wear sensible shoes as there is a lot of scrambling to do, and parts can be very slippy as the rocks are wet.

Took our hire car about halfway down the road towards the car park and then parked it under a tree and walked the rest of the way. Realistically the car park is accessible in a 4x4 only if you value your car - or value not wrecking your hire car.
Wear a hat, good shoes, and take plenty of water. The walk to the gorge is beautiful and there is so much wildlife to see. The goats are great! Walking along the gorge is stunning, but the further you go down the more you have to cross from one side of the stream to the other which gets a little precarious towards the end - but nothing too dangerous.
The main car park does have toilets and there was also a van with a guy selling fresh orange juice and cold cans of drink & bottles of water.
The walk is easy and relatively flat, but 100% not suitable for pushchairs.

We parked the car in the first carpark and hiked the short distance to the entrance of the gorge. We were a group of 3 people in good condition and it took us 3 hours (with stops for pictures and a lunch break) to get to the end (landmark 48). The walk leads though the river bedding in the gorge and was quite challenging. We had to cross the river on slippery stones and walk along narrow trails, climbing over obstacles. Make sure you wear good hinking shoes and take plenty of water.
At landmark 48 we hiked up and walked back on top of the gorge.

Early morning is muct better for a visit. Last 5-7km of the road is very bumpy, please be careful. Especially if you have a rental car with low clearance. At the place we saw and heard lots of pigeons and small crows. At few narrow places we witness falling rocks. Small, but big enough for injuries. Don't look up. During spring time the place is full of flowers, but in August it is rather dusty.
