I'm not sure why this has been described as a dirty area, we found it delightful! The area is composed of old, single storey houses of simple design. They are whitewashed with blue doors and windows. The owners seem to take pride in the area, there are lots of flower tubs full of colourful flowers which we took lots of pictures of.
The area is close to Kyrenia gate on the way to the Venetian Column.

Interesting quarter with houses built in old Cypriot style. It is not a major attraction, but it is worlth to drop by while roaming northern part of the capital.

The Samanbahce Quarter is an area of Nicosia of houses built in a particular style. Originally conceived as social housing. The area consists of consists of 72 separate units with streets built along strict geometric lines with a water fountain in the centre.
It's good for a photo op, but little else. I saw this as part of the one day walking tour from the North Cyprus tourism board. Otherwise, I wouldn't go out of my way.

The Samanbahce Quarter was supposed to revive the traditional Turkish neighbourhood, but this place situated in the Turkish part of Nicosia is too neglected and dirty.

This is the first social housing project in Cyprus. It is located in the north of Nicosia if you cross by the Ledra Palace passport control, you will have to do a detour, second left after the Venetian column and just past the British Colonial Law Courts.
The houses were built between 1918 and 1925. The project consists of about 70 houses. There is a hexagonal fountain located in the centre of the quarter, which used to be the main water supply.
As we walked past, we got talking to a local man, who informed us, that the houses consist of two rooms as well as a kitchen and bathroom. Catching a glimpse into one open footed house, it looked tired old, and possibly housing several generations of a family. Interesting as these houses have no front or rear gardens.
