An important piece of the history of Cyprus
Feb 2017 • Friends
During the struggle for independence from the British Empire, 9 young men where captured and hanged for their part in the struggle and buried in an area inside the prison in unmarked graves. Four more who were killed fighting were also buried here. It was felt at the time, that releasing their bodies to their families to bury, would encourage militant demonstrations.
Many years later a new prison governor discovered a document which marked the burial place of the 13 young men. As a result, the burial area has now become a national monument and is well worth a visit by those interested in the islands complex history.
Visiting hours are between 8.30am and 1pm, cameras are allowed but no mobiles or bags.
We were shown around by a gentleman who knew some of the young men in person.
