We booked the tour with Mr. John just the night before, even though at first he had no available places, next morning he texted us that 2 places opened up if we still want to go, so we rushed from Nicosia to Protaras to take this tour. I do recommend booking the tour at least few days in advance since Mr. John is pretty booked. We're really grateful he texted us back and that we got to experience Famagusta and the newly opened part of Varosha with him and Mr. Ahmed. Mr John is a greek Cypriot who was born and raised in the occupied city of Famagusta, more precisely Varosha - the now ghost town, which used to be an important turist destination up to 1974 when it was abandoned, in addition the village was fully closed to the public until 2020.
His companion on this tour is Mr. Ahmed - a turkish Cypriot guide who refers himself as his "best enemy".
Together they make a great team, full of great first hand stories and funny jokes.
In conclusion, great tour for even better price, 20€ for a full day trip seems more than fair. Would recommend it to anyone who is interested to learn more about history of this area.
Thank you again Mr. John and Mr. Ahmed, we had a lovely trip with you.

This trip with Mr John and Mr Ahmed was thoroughly enjoyable and so interesting. It was very good but emotional to hear personal experiences from both Mr John and Mr Ahmed. They were more than happy to answer our questions and we found them both very approachable and friendly. It was amazing to get into part of the ghost town of Varosha- very interesting but sad. We stopped at the Old Town afterwards which was lovely. Would recommend Petek’s for lunch- extremely reasonably priced and food was delicious. In our opinion, if you are interested in hearing about and seeing Famagusta, this is the only tour you should be considering as you wouldn’t get personal experiences from any other tour. Thank you both so much for a great and informative day out!

We booked as a group of 8 and every one of us enjoyed the experience and had a fantastic time. Mr John and Mr Ahmed were very informative and entertaining and made everyone feel so welcome. We were also picked up and dropped off from our villa which made things much easier. The tour is from 11am- 6:30ish so well worth €20! The trip itself was very memorable and I’d recommend it to everyone who is visiting Protaras. There was so much to learn and reflect on, I can’t praise it enough. This trip also gave opportunities to make friends and meet new people. Thank you again Mr John and Mr Ahmed for a wonderful day!

My warm recommendations to Mr John. This tour is a great opportunity to learn about occupation and Famagusta from a local guide who also told his own touching story. The gost town Varosha and Famagusta walled city are also very photogenic.

Mr John and Mr Ahmed organized the trip very well. I booked it previous day via SMS. Mr John picked me exactly at agreed time. We had a short break at a cafe with a view point to Varosha, then we crossed the border and had a walking tour in Varosha. Finally it was free time in the walled Famagusta city to eat and see around.

The tour took around 7 hours and was reasonably priced. I participated this tour as a female solo traveller and felt very comfortable with the nice group.

Please bring a bottle of water with before going to the ghost city. They only accept local currency or local credit card in the small kiosk.

This was the most brilliant tour we have ever taken part in anywhere and at 20 euros each we both felt it was amazing value.
It is a fantastic opportunity to develop an honest understanding of Northern Cyprus in the 1970s and prior to then, with people who genuinely lived and are still living through these experiences.
If you go to Cyprus this 6 plus hour excursion is definitely something not to be missed! A rather sad insight into the history of Cyprus, but one that should definitely be experienced.
Mr John and his learned friend and co Cypriot Mr Ahmed work so brilliantly as a team sparking from each other’s sense of humour. Describing them at Cyprus’s answer to Ant & Dec, the Two Ronnies, or Morcambe & Wise doesn’t even do them justice. Such a delightful pair.

We were a group of travellers from Canada, and drove through this ghostly region while visiting Famagusta. We did not stop at all, and it was unreal to see houses occupied on one side of the road, while empty and ruined on the other side. Famagusta was captured in 1974 during the civil war between Greece and Turkey, and was fenced off by the Turkish army, and it has remained this way for 48 years.
Apparently the Turkish side offered it back to the Greek south on condition the border was recognised, however this was rejected and the town became frozen in time.
Travel is permitted between north and south and very limited entry to the town is permitted. Well worth a visit!

A real and unique experience. Mr. John and Mr Ahmed gave us a very interesting view on the region and its most important historical events. From picking up in three different points (incl. Ayia Napa) until coming back, you can follow their story and feel their emotions. Very very recommended.
You can book directly at Mr. John telephone number (+35 799622139) or by Instagram/Facebook.

I think Maras district should be the most interesting place in Cyprus and one of the most interesting ones in the world. To best of my knowledge, it was closed for more than 40 years, since Turkish Peace Operation to Cyprus. I have learned from some locals that, Maras was captured without any gun war so that it is not possible to see traces of war as in some comments. At the entrance point, you can rent a bicycle for an acceptable price. While visiting the ghost city with a bicycle , you will feel like you are in a film set. You can use the beach. It was very clean and beatiful. You can only use main roads and it is forbideen to enter the buildings and branch roads. There is also a new cafeteria where can you drink cold beverages. It is very close to Magus city center. Maras should be in your to do list, at the top.

Mr. John picked us up at 11 am in his minibus, which was a little crowded and small, but it has air conditioning so it was fine.

Mr. John has a lot of knowledge about Famagusta and told us many interesting facts and stories from his own times in the city. Some of it got a little repetitive, but still interesting. Unfortunately it was a bit challenging for me to fully understand him, since he’s got quite a thick accent. But later on the tour we meet Ahmed, our Turkish guide from the north side, who is excellent at English.

I think we drove around outside and around the border for a bit too long for my liking, and was a bit disappointed we didn’t get to spend more time in the actual ghosttown (we walked around for about 30-40 mins.). We then saw the old town, spent 2 hours there to eat and go shopping, and was back home at 6 pm. So a long, but fun and interesting day!

Mr. John is very kind, and my family and I are very glad we chose him to show us around town! Would definitely recommend. :-)
