- Florian RParis, France381 contributionsThe only activity in LuxembourgThe overall walk in the Grund district is quite substantial given the size of the city... In my opinion, this is the only essential activity to do as the rest is not necessarily interesting. You have to go up and around the top until you reach the cathedral then go to the Rocher du Bock where a panoramic view will delight more than one and go through the Casemates tunnel and take a stroll in the lower part of the district. It's exotic, calm - unlike other parts of the city. To return to the city, an elevator awaits you at the end of the route to avoid going up the slopes which can be tiring.Visited March 2024Traveled soloWritten March 19, 2024
- AgampodiAnuradhapura, Sri Lanka471 contributionsGrund: A Walk Through Luxembourg’s Living HistoryWalking through Grund felt like stepping into another era. What I loved most were the historic buildings and narrow, cobblestone paths that wind through this picturesque district. The architecture tells the story of centuries past, with each building exuding character and charm. It’s easy to get lost in the quiet, meandering streets, imagining the history that has unfolded here. The contrast between the ancient structures and the natural beauty surrounding them makes Grund feel like a true escape from the modern world. If you enjoy exploring historic sites and walking through time, Grund is a must-visit! Tip: Make sure to explore in the late afternoon, when the light enhances the beauty of the old stone buildings.Visited September 2024Traveled soloWritten October 13, 2024
- GabrielaSeevetalSeevetal, Germany10,413 contributionsIn July 2024 many construction sitesFrom the square with the Luxembourg dishes and the fountain “Fountaine aux Colombes” you have a beautiful view of the lower town. At the end of the square, a bridge connects two buildings. There lies a little hidden the elevator to the lower town to the “Plateau St. Esprit”. There are also small roads leading directly in to Grund on foot about 20 minutes. In July there was a lot of asphalting work in the ground, so you could not go to the Alzette at all. We then visited the Eglise Saint-Jean-Baptiste. Nevertheless, it is definitely worth a trip to the lower city.Visited July 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten October 20, 2024

District located below the upper town, located within the river. Beautiful views of the upper city, the city's art venue with exhibitors of all kinds.
Cute, quiet and romantic neighborhood. It feels like a small village even though we are in the middle of the city.
Allow 1 hour to go down, visit, take some distance to contemplate the city and its fortifications and go back up, of course.

Grund is located in the valley below the centre of Luxembourg City, it is nestled on the Alzette River and is incredibly picturesque with its charming architecture and beautiful backdrop. It is a nice place to stroll and also ideal for photo opportunities. There are many landmarks at Grund including Neumünster Abbey, Casemates du Bock as well as many other sights which are squeezed into a relatively small area. We walked from Gare Centrale to Grund and then took the public lift up to Ville-Haute which took a few minutes and is very accessible. It is a very attractive area of Luxembourg City and well worth exploring.

A great place to visit when staying in Luxembourg City!
We went down one of the many steep paths (or just take the lift) and we walked along the valley to GRUND, which feels like a completely different village surrounded by cliffs and the city above, with a very picturesque bridge and centre.
There is a small museum with dinosaurs, a pretty church, several bars and places to eat… TWO Michelin star restaurants, a cosy pub and a lively bar - it was a lovely place to visit during the day and a surprisingly great place to go on Saturday night
The lift stays open until 4am, there’s also a free bus

Grund is a historic neighborhood in downtown Luxembourg. The row of waterside houses and alleys is now a popular tourist attraction. It looks as if time stops at the medieval age. A stroll around the area is pleasurable.

We visited Luxembourg for the first time with our 22 year old son, who was going to a wedding on Sunday.
We had a full day free on Saturday and having spent a comfortable night at Legere hotel we intended getting the bus into the City centre. Sadly it was torrential rain and we took the car and got free parking at Glacis Boulevard de la Foire. We headed on foot to The Grund which was a lovely walk, took a few photos but we could have spent ages there. Amazing views, we took the free lift back, which saved a walk.

Drop down here via one of the two lifts from the Royal City above and it is like a completely different place. Nice to just walk around visiting any of the lovely building that are open. Good places to eat or refresh. As has been said the (free) 23 bus goes from one end to the other - use it as a hop on hop off. We visited in December but I know from the past that a river walk in summer is lovely.

Grund is the old town of Luxembourg City located along the banks of the Alzette River.
It is a great place to walk around (day and night) and enjoy the beautiful landscapes, its unique architecture and the beautiful bridges.
Not to miss, the Abbey of Neumünster (cultural center) and Eglise Saint-Jean-de-Grund.

You could easily spend a few hours strolling through this picturesque area of Luxembourg. The buildings are stunning and historic. You can walk along the river or explore the narrow streets and back alleys. Theirs no shortage of cafes and restaurants for you to choose from. This is an area that’s definitely not to be missed.

Many areas in Luxembourg has many sunken areas and some above others. It is truly unusual especially in the city. It makes for an interesting and unusual. place. The Grund is one of these areas. It is like a fairytale district with gorgeous views flanked by nature and the Alzette River. It is in the heart of an old fortress and is a UNESCO site. The Grund is calmer and quieter than areas nearby. It is truly worth a visit.

From the main city it is hard to imagine this even exists. The Grund is set deep into a valley which needs to be accessed either by many steps or slopes down. If you are feeling fit and have good walking shoes I would do it this way as there are interesting things to see on the way down. If not you can access by car, there is limited parking outside of the protected area. Or by bus, taxi or the glass elevator. The elevator is about a 20 minute walk from the Grund. I can imagine in icy or wet days the pathways would be very slippery. There are signs warning you of this as you start your decent at the steps. The steps down are in several places near to the Golden lady statue. Once in the Grund there are a few places to grab a drink, Scott’s bar is very popular as is the Uptown bar. Just outside of the protected area there is a local school a stark contrast and very modern building. There is also an area which has several bars and restaurants that open in the evening, we didn’t try these so can’t comment on atmosphere or quality. It did look like it may appeal to young adults as there were ‘happy hours’ and a youth hostel not too far away. On saying this everyone we met was lovely so it probably has a great vibe, if we go back would definitely try it. Just a lovely place to walk round and like no other city in its layout, almost a city within a city.

He estado allí varias veces y me gustaría saber que significa Grund. Se escribe Gronn en luxemburgués. Supongo que terreno profundo o tierras bajas, o algo así. Pero sólo es una suposición.

There is very little info on these elevators and nowhere can I find whether these are free to ride or is there a charge, If so how much is it either for a single fare or return.
Thanks

There are two elevators which can be used to go up or down from/to the Old City: one from "Plateau du Saint Esprit" / "Cité Judiciaire" on top or the Updown bar on the bottom, the other, newer one is on the opposite side, close to "Fondation Pescadore" known as "Pfaffenthal Lift" which is quite new and made of glass which gives you nice views over "Fort Obergrünewald" and "Draï Eechelen".
Both are free to use and open from 05:00 to 24:00 at least

Hi, I note from your review that you took the elevator, can you tell me if it is free if not how much is it.
Thanks

2 lifts, about 1 km distance between them, free to use, no operator.
1 lift close to the Grand Duchesse-Charlotte Bridge (large bridge, painted in red), the 2nd lift in the Cité Judiciaire. Makes life easy to explore the city. Hope this helps.

Is it possible to book ahead? Or is it not necessary?
Also, how much does it cost?
Thanks in advance!

Hello, there´s no booking or cost, this is kind of a neighborhood in Luxembourg, in the valley and close to the river, this is intended for a nice walk as the place is very beautiful, houses, river, park, etc. If you cannot reach it on Google, just ask any local when you get there, and enjoy the place
