Great facade on the outside for both the basilica and the abbey buildings right next to it. Although the abbey was founded already in the 4th century, most of the church dates from the 11th century and later, and the abbey buildings from the 17th and 18th centuries. The abbey buildings are now mostly used as a school, but there is a small museum with facsimile of manuscripts written and decorated at the abbey, but now dispersed throughout the world. The church is atmospheric, but there are few decorations to be seen, as most of the church, except for the outer walls, was destroyed at the end of the 2nd world war. Inside the church, do not miss the 8th century crypt, which has in the centre still a ceiling painting from the 11th century, if I remember correctly. It is here that the tomb (now empty) of St Willibord is housed in a neo-gothic sculpture over tomb.…

Lovely building and super views from outside. Crypt is definitely worth a visit. Do read all the info.

We have visited the St. Willebrord Basilica and its crypt in Echternach. The Merovingian crypt contains a white marble sarcophagus in which are the remains of the founder of the Abbey of Echternach. 11th century frescoes.

We visited the cathedral during one of nights. More priests were present and a very nice music was played by the org. The building is very tall, decorated in the Germanic style . The atmosphere inside was s very intense one. Outside, there is a large yard paved, appropriate for pictures and walking …
