The largest and most important square of the city overlooked by important buildings, Palazzo del Gran aestro and Istituto Italiano di Cultura is a pedestrian area but during our visit part of the paizza was hidden by scaffolding perhaps for recent holidays. It is at the end of the walk in the old town, striking for the original interpretation of the space. Very nice fountains at street level.Visited July 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten January 18, 2025

Here overlooks the Palace of the Grand Master and on the other side the building of the Grand Guard (facade under restoration when we passed) with two fountains on the sides and a modern one in the center. Almost deserted under the sun apart from the kids playing.Visited June 2024Traveled on businessWritten August 18, 2024

Large square located along the slope that leads to Forte S.Elmo.
Piazza San Giorgio can be considered the heart of the city: it is in fact located right in the center and is surrounded by numerous buildings, both ancient and modern, which make it a pleasant and suitable space for a break.
The square is home to numerous institutional buildings: the presidential palace, the Main Guard and the Chancellery of the Order overlook it.
It's a shame that the fountains located in the center of the square were not in operation, both from a scenographic point of view and for refreshment on a sultry autumn day.

One of my favourite areas. Lots of history. If you happen to be around at 10pm, each evening music is played to accompany the dancing fountains. Absolutely delightful. Especially in the summer months, when Maltese families visit to cool off, listen to the music and watch their children playing in the water.

Pleasant square in the centre of Valetta surrounded by low rise colonial architecture. Is frequently used for outside events so quite often blocked off whilst stages are built and taken down so only accessible for a couple of days during our week-long stay. There are plenty of restaurants and bars thereabouts including in the Republican Square next door and you get a good view down into the area from the balconies of the Casino Maltese on the South Western corner of the square.

It can be reached along Republic Street, the main road of Valletta. Its most prominent building is the palace of the grandmasters, presently under renovation. The June 7/19 monument is also located in the square. It was always quiet and with few pedestrians when I passed through, a chance to get away from the buzz along most of Republic Street.

If you happen to use the hop on hop off bus, this is one of the squares it passes, you can stop here and just enjoy the ambience. This square is also called Palace Square due to the Palace at the square.
At this square I was able to join the crowds waving and welcoming the new members of parliament, on the day the new prime minister was supposed to have been sworn in.
It's a lively square with lots of shops and restaurants. Benches are placed outside so you can sit and watch the day drift by..

We were passing this square at leat two times a day due to the location of our hotel. It has nothing interesting to show. A very cold, dark and full of garbage place. Its a shame for such city and area not to be well preserved

Great place to sit, relax and people watch. The fountains in the floor provide endless entertainment. As a Brit I find it most amusing that although Malta has gained its independence, they have chosen to keep the Royal Warrant at the top of the portico in the main square. I guess it's all part of their pride in having been awarded The George Cross?

St. George square - the square in front of the Palace of the Grand Master ... sooner or latter you get here when you walk the city of Valletta.
Now - in July 2023 it was free of crowds - now since the Grand Masters Palace was closed for visitor due to work of reconditioning - that can explain the lack of tourist.
The square is surrounded by historical buildings and has in one corner the monument dedicated to those fallen on the 7th of June 1919... and and if you walk around paying attention to the details you will spot more interesting decorations and architectural features in the square.
Overall a nice spot to take some pictures while you walk the city and definitely worthy of a few pictures.

A very attractive public square with cobblestone streets, with the very important Grandmaster Palace to the south and plenty of monuments. Many of the buildings surrounding the square are of late Renaissance and early Baroque designs, so it’s very interesting to see the transition between the two periods. The rest of the square and many of the surrounding streets are full of cafes and restaurants.

Nice square with some interesting and beautiful buildings. The fountain is not always working. Good place for a picnic.

Pouvez vous me dire quels jour et à quelle heure on peut voir la relève de la garde à La Valette?
