About
The Saluting Battery is one of Malta's most vibrant visitor attractions where history is brought to life daily! Located high along Valletta's eastern historic ramparts it enjoys unrivalled spectacular views of the Grand Harbour and its surrounding fortified towns. It is also perhaps the oldest saluting battery still in operation anywhere in the world. Here one can see a fully restored gun powder magazine, an artillery side-arm store, a handsome collection of original muzzle-loading artillery , ammunition and equipment and get a close-look at the saluting guns. The battery is equipped with audio-guides but guided torus in English are also available three times a day at 11.00, 12.30 And 15.00Hrs.

The saluting battery sets off the noonday gun every day. Initially for sailors and townsfolk to set the time. Now for the tourists it is still a sight worth watching.

Well recommended visit for history/military buffs (12pm and 4pm daily)! The firing display is very exciting and it’s worth paying the small fee (that supports the volunteers to maintain them) to see up close the cannons and how they work.

This place has it spot on as far as attractions in Valletta go. Can be enjoyed totally for free from the Upper Barrakka Gardens or even from across the bay in Three Cities if you wish. However, for a super reasonable €3 per adult, the guided tour of the battery is well worth it and actually very interesting (even for those, like me, who aren't generally interested in war/artillery). Our solider guide, Jake, was great!

Very interesting museum, the guided tour last 1,5 hours, visiting the bunker under the battery, getting out on time to see the 4 pm shot. It is very precisely restored, and wonderfully explained by the guide. Unfortunatly the tour is only in english, but the guide spoke slowly enought to allow not native speaker people to understand everything.
Absolutely an activity to do in Valletta

We caught this by chance on our first day. It's an important tradition that they are upkeeping, and when we went it did get quite busy as the time approached. If you want to get a good view, I do recommend either going downstairs or being there 15-20 minutes early.

Fantastic spectacle to watch the cannon fire at midday and well worth the visit! Fred is funny and very personable and Umberto gives an outstanding tour of the NATO tunnels underneath the fort, which were used in WWII and during the Cold War period. We worried about the price for the tours at first but it is honestly so worth it! The guides make sure to answer every question and speak with such great enthusiasm and passion which brings the whole thing to life! Suitable for all ages.

It's well worth paying the few euros to come down to the gun battery for an explanation of things and a short tour of the little exhibition - you can stand and watch from street level above, but it's not the same. Good value for money. Knowledgeable and friendly staff - young Jake who showed us round is a great guy. :-)

Despite being in Valetta for a week we never did manage to be in the right place when the guns were fired so can only report that they sound pretty spectacular when they do go off, which happens shortly after the Noon air raid siren has finished doing its bit. The one day we were close by and on time the site was closed for a private function and the guns silenced for the day, presumably to prevent shattering all the glassware of the tables.
