By English standards this is a small park, planted up flower beds and a few trees overlooking the harbour, but it's pleasant enough. The main reason for our visit was to see the firing of the four o clock cannon. This is re-enacted by the historical society with all the ceremony of yester year as a fundraising spectacle. It's very popular so arrive early and take your place on the terrace overlooking the Saluting battery or pay 3 euros and go down to the battery itself. If you watch from the top be sure to put something in the collecting tin on the way out!

We liked to find a shady bench with a good view of the Grand Harbour outside the crowded times. Or ignore the view and sit by the fountain instead admiring the geraniums and spotting the occasional lizard basking in the sun. Open a sandwich bag and every pigeon in town is your friend but there were no seagulls.

We used the lift 1 Euro each return to take a one man water taxi across to Birgu; 2 Euros each way landing by the maritime museum ( closed ).
(They rock alarmingly if you are top heavy and not too nimble boarding.)
Then a stroll along Birgu marina waterfront to the fort followed by a cold drink under the parasols of the Chill bar watching the activity on the moored boats.

We visited here on day 2 and 4 of our week in Malta and enjoyed our visit both times even though the weather was really wet and windy on the first visit. The worst for 10 years we were told.

Beautifully laid out gardens with monuments and fountains.

Toilets are available here.

Great views out over the grand harbour and the canons. ( if you would like to see the Canon fired at noon or 4.00pm it is worth paying the small fee to go down the steps and see it up close and personal, as this includes a short talk afterwards and there are information boards taking you through each historical time period.

An interesting thing to see....from the upper garden you can witness the saluting battery of canons that fire everyday....when you take the stairs down you get to a small museum, and for the real great price of €3 per person you get more information about the saluting battery and his history. You can watch the firing of the canon much better and stand much closer then the people upstairs.

This wonderful garden is a tranquil place to visit at any time of day, with bucolic greenery and a sense of calm away from the city's bustle. There are gun salutes at noon and at 4pm which are well worth a visit, but even if you miss them, you still get a beautiful view of the harbour. The cafe's beverages were very good.

The 'Upper Barrakka Gardens' in Valletta are a public garden offering a panoramic view of Malta's Grand Harbour and the Three Cities. The gardens are located on the upper tier of St. Peter & Paul Bastion, which was built in the 1560's. The garden's terraced arches were built in 1661 by the Italian knight Fra Flaminio Balbiani. These arches were originally roofed, but the ceiling was removed in 1775. The gardens have been open to the public since 1800. In the gardens you will find several monuments and memorials to a number of prominent people, including Sir Thomas Maitland and Sir Winston Churchill. You will also find the entrance to the bastion's lower tier where the Saluting Battery can be found. We watched the Saluting Battery's evening firing, which takes place at 4:00 pm, from the terrace of the Upper Barrakka Garden which was a great vantage point from which to observe this Maltese spectacle. Finally I recommend going from the Upper Garden down to the waterfront, using the Barrakka Lift, and from here taking a water taxi over to the Three Cities and Fort St. Angelo.
In summary the Upper Barrakka Garden's and the attractions around it are well worth a visit when in historic Valletta.

Lovely lovely place. Make sure you get to see the saluting battery at 12PM or 4PM. Be there with at least 15 min before so you make sure you have the best place to over see the preparations and the shooting. The saluting battery is a MUST!
You ca grab a coffee and enjoy the view over the harbour.

It was such a pleasure to enjoy the Delicata Classic Wine Festival in Upper Barrakka Gardens. Entrance to the garden was free. Wine tickets went for sale at 7pm. €20 for 24 wine coins and a free commemarative wine glass. Then there were about 10 wine stalls where a glass of wine was 4 to 8 coins each. Good price and lovely chilled wines. Not such a bargain purchasing extra coins - €10 for 10 coins.
Good atmosphere created by the band. Excellent performance of familiar songs. Plenty of dancing as well. Food was also available, and toilets. We really enjoyed the evening.

Probably my favourite location in Malta. A beautiful and tranquil location despite being a busy tourist spot. Lovely grounds, spectacular views of Grand Harbour, and topped off by a very cheap seated snack bar that stocks delicious freshly cooked pastries and a refreshing beer for €3.50.

Twice a day the gun is fired 12 noon and again later in the day. The firing is ceremonial and watched by many each day. There is a cafe in the gsrdens, toilets as well. The gardens are interesting to meander through. There are history facts in the gardens.
