I was recently in Malta for a conference, and decided to look for a running tour the day before I departed for home. I found the Go! Running Tour and seeing the positive reviews on Trip Advisor, from a cross-section of different types of runners, I decided to book. Most of my previous tours have been with independent running tour operators, This was my first time with a tour booked through the "Go! Runnning Tours" operation.

I have been on official guided running tours in several cities in Europe in the last couple of years, and my expectations from a running tour are based around the idea that the tour guide be prompt in responding to inquiries, picks you up at the place you are staying, shows up on time, is able to communicate effectively, and provides an enjoyable run that is adaptable to my pace. I'm a fairly high-mileage runner, myself. Not super-fast, but I do run 25-35 mile per week, typically.

Ramon of Go! Running met all of these expectations quite well. I signed up for the "Amazing Cliffs and Silent City" tour which was about 14K in distance altogether. This was not close to where I was staying in the Intercontinental Hotel in St Julians, but Ramon offered to pick me up. His communication with me before the run, and confirmation that everything was still on, were great.

He showed up a bit early for our 9:00 am meeting time, and I was early as well. He was parked in front of the hotel and I was able to quickly come out and jump into his car and we set off across to the west end of the small island of Malta. The weather during my trip (in early February) was in the 12-14C temp range, but sunny and a bit breezy.

This tour started at a car park near some walking paths down to the Dingli Cliffs, some tall limestone cliffs that drop down into the Mediterranean Sea. Many of the roads in that part of Malta don't have a lot of traffic -- there were as many farmers in horse-drawn carts as there were cars when we were out on the country roads. Of course, February is the off-season in Malta, so not sure what traffic would be like other times of the year.

The countryside was beautiful, and most of the terrain was rolling hills for most of the run. Ramon was a friendly and knowledgable tour guide, and grew up in Malta. He's a personal trainer with his own gym for his regular career, he told me. We had a very enjoyable conversation and he was happy to run whatever pace I wanted.

The highlights for me were running through the modern and ancient parts of the city of Mdina and and the surrounding area of Rabat. What a spectacular place, and how interesting that people still live in many of the houses in the ancient walled city. Ramon pointed out a small bakery that produces some of the best "pastizzi" pastries, and was familiar with the history of the cities and sites.

Had a great time, and the run ended within the estimated distance and time predicted. When we got back to the car, Ramon provided water and a couple of granola bars. On the way back to my hotel, he stopped quickly back at the Crystal Palace bakery to pick up a few pastizzis which we ate in the car on the way back.

There were enough hills that I told Ramon I'd consider labelling it a "medium" run vs. "easy" -- but he said he was always willing to slow down to whatever pace his client would like to run.

I had a great time and would totally recommend this tour to experienced runner who are used to a 12-16k distance. Some of the hills were a bit challenging, but not so much to keep me from enjoying the run.

My wife and I booked a running tour with Ramon, and it was the best part of our 4 days in Malta. He picked us up at the Phonecia Hotel and drove us to the other end of the island. We had a relaxed run for 1 1/2 hours or so, and saw and learned about parts of the island that we would not have otherwise seen. Gorgeous coast, cliffs, beaches, and history. Thank you Ramon!!!

Ramon let us switch the day of our running tour to take advantage of the weather. He was courteous and knowledgable about Valletta and the surrounding area. He met us at the ferry and let us put our things in his car while we ran around. He always checked that the pace was not too fast / slow and he stopped to show us the best photo opportunities! He showed us parts of Valletta that we wouldn’t have seen and suggested other activities that we could do in the rest of Malta.

We can definitely recommend Ramon.

Picked up from hotel in Valetta. Drove to Dingli cliffs and 14k run through Rabat and Mdina. Ramon was great company and very knowledgeable. Very hilly but lots of opportunity to stop and look at the fantastic buildings (and catch your breath!). Would definitely recommend!
