About
Bahrija Oasis is a permaculture off-grid ecological farm close to Rabat, Malta. It is in a beautiful yet occasional windy area of Malta. Our farm is more like a natural refuge where one can find peace and connection. It is suitable for whoever wants to spend a few days living off the grid and experiencing simplicity. We also organize group visits and team building eco activities. Please note its strictly vegetarian food only and no smoking within the farm space. Our rooms are geodesic domes specially designed to cocoon you from the chaotic world!

It is a human experience that will surely remain engraved in your memory! Especially since Peppy, Ruth and Zulu (the dog) are really friendly and will answer all your questions about permaculture

Bahrija is a remote village to the NW of Mdina. It is renowned for it's rural character, its Festival celebrating St Martin's Festa, and the typical traditional Maltese dishes served at the couple of restaurants and bars that serve the locality. It also boasts many rolling fields through which runs a perpetual fresh water stream that is used to irrigate the fields. Over the centuries, the farmers have adopted a system for allotting water shares according to the amount of land each farmer possesses and the water share is stored in cisterns to be siphoned off later to fields farther down stream. The freshwater stream flows through a gully gouged over the decades into the clay substrate. The stream has become colonized by giant cane reed and this area is one of the very few places in Malta where the endemic fresh water crab can still be observed burrowing underneath the cane roots to build its refuge. The area is subject to stringent conservation regulation because the freshwater crab is threatened with extinction since its natural habitat has been reduced dramatically.
Just a stone's throw away from this freshwater stream one can invariably meet Peppi Gauci busy adding something new to his permaculture adventure which has gradually evolved into the Bahrija Oasis. And it is well and truly an Oasis. Not just technically because he has managed to create a small agricultural wonder out of an apparent desert but because his creative and sustainable approach to cultivation stands out like a green oasis amidst a desert of other cultivation methods mostly dependent on extravagant use of fertilizers and pesticides.Peppi's Bahrija Oasis is not just a [production unit. It is an experimental and research haven for students from all over the world who are inclined to test their own green convictions by rolling up their sleeves and helping out. Many come over and spend a few days or a couple of weeks with Peppi, sharing the work burden with him in the same way they share the food he spreads on the table . They do not mind roughing it out and , once their stint there is over, they leave with a huge satisfied grin on their faces and a promise to return again.
Other visitors call in on Peppi, some to just satisfy their curiosity about the concept of permaculture and how it is applied. Others want to get a taste of real wholesome fruits and vegetables grown completely organically and with very little water. The Oasis is not a commercial concern and Peppi needs to somehow make ends meet. Visitors rarely leave the Oasis without purchasing some honey, fresh or preserved vegetables and fruit, or some free-range eggs. None of them ever regret their purchases because they are a delight to the taste buds and a blessing for their health. The Oasis is really off the beaten track not only because of its remote locality but it appears to be lost in time as well. It seems that time does not really count there. You do not notice time passing while you're chatting with Peppi or his companions. You sit on a rock next to them while they enthusiastically give you an account of what they are trying to do, what they have achieved so far and what they hope to achieve in the coming years. One word of caution. Only group visits are being accepted because random visits were consuming too much valuable time. Details regarding booking and fees may be found at : http://permaculturemalta.org/bahrija-oasis/half-day
So if you're anywhere near Mdina or Rabat, follow the directions to Bahrija. Park your care at the edge of the village and walk down the track towards the stream. Once you cross the narrow stream - no more than one metre - you need only walk a few more metres up the hill before you find yourselves in Peppi's realm - in the Bahrija Oasis. The walk will be very salutary and the visit to the Oasis will be one of the most refreshing experiences you can hope for.

I stayed at the farm as a volunteer to help Peppi. It was one of the most beautiful and powerful enrichment I ever lived. The place is lovely and Peppi welcomes you as a member of his own family. Don't hesitate to live this experience!

Bahrija Oasis Permaculture Bio Farm. A very interesting farm. I recommend visiting for educational purposes. For me, for a lifetime person living in very large cities was fascinating.

I loved staying at Bahrija Oasis. I think it's perfect if you need to have contact with nature and have a pause from the highly edificated and crowded places in Malta. While enjoying my stay, I also learned about permaculture and eco-building because the keeper of the place, Peppi, experimented and practised a lot in the farm. The farm is located on a walking path over the cliffs with a beautiful scenario, so it's pefect for trecking.

Bahrija Oasis is a place to visit for many reasons. Peppi Gauci has managed to recreate a sanctuary, a 'holy place', where the flow of life is palpable in the air, in the soil, in the food, and the personal encounters that take place at the Oasis. Peppi managed to integrate his own life journey, and experience within a very grounded project, that of creating a permaculture farm on the semi-arid land of Bahrija. If you want to come up close and personal with the concept of resilience, the Bahrija farm is definitely the place to visit. Permaculture farming, friendship and the joy of living find expression on this side of the Maltese Islands.

My girlfriend and I stayed at Peppis farm for two months. This was definitely one of the best decisions we have ever made. These two months were extremely valuable for us and we learned a lot about Permaculture, but also about ourselves and living in harmony with nature and oneself.
This place is one of the most beautiful and spectacular spots in Malta. Even after two months one is overwhelmed by the beauty of this place. Moreover, it’s impressive how Peppi build it by himself only with a vision in his head. Now his farm has become a site with one of the highest biodiversity all over europe. So I am extremely thankful that I had the opportunity to help Peppi and to learn a lot during this time.
From day one Peppi was extremely kind to us so that we always felt at home.
His passion for what he is doing and his grateful character have made Peppi one of my role models. I saw how important it is to have a vision in life and to stick to your values.
That’s why my girlfriend and I will keep these two months at Peppis farm forever in our hearts.

P.S. I don’t want to forget to mention Zulu, the farm dog of Bahrija Oasis. Zulu is a very special dog, we loved the time playing with him or just enjoying the rainy days in the gazebo. So Zulu also earned his very special place in our hearts.

Really recommend this place if you re looking to have some peaceful moments reconnecting with nature/yourself/ friends and family 😊 Peppi and Jasmin are really welcoming and they both share the love and appreciation for this space. Peppi loves sharing his knowledge and experience on permaculture and how to grow your own organic vegetables so if this is something that is of interest to you this is definitely the place to visit. I ve been to this farm for two whole weekends already this year and both experiences have been really beautiful that brought me happiness, love and connection ❤️❤️ Thank you so much for creating such a wonderful place!

Bahrija Oasis , is an very cleverly designed Oasis for people looking for peace, tranquility, raw and real.
A perfect place to get in touch with nature, the elements and yourself.
Peppi was extremely welcoming and made us feel at home.
The ’Glamps’ camps are very clean, mattresses very comfortable , shower is great , hot water.
One can also buy organic foods from there. Grown by Peppi. I highly recommend the Honey and propolis.
Oasis is surrounded by beautiful walks, best sunset spot , the sea is at walking distance, surrounded by clay dunes.
I will definitely return for weekend breaks as much as I can. Left there feeling new.
