After a stroll around the silent city of Mdina a trip on the sightseeing train around Mdina, Rabat and Mtarfa was a great way to end our vday visit to the City. At 6 euro each for about a 30-min trip it is a great way to make sure that you have the opportunity to see all that you can particularly of Rabat and Mtarfa, and take some photos. It is quite bumpy, but that adds to its charm. The pick up and drop off stop is easy to find by the bus terminus. Great for families and couples alike. Definitely worth it.

We enjoyed this 30 minute trip as part of the combined ticket we bought for Euros 20 for the train, catacombs, Roman Museum an National Museum. There was a commentary on the way. It was fun winding our way round the narrow winding streets of Rabat and we enjoyed the view of Mdina, the walled city, from a distance. The driver stopped for us to take photos. The train is well maintained.

We decided at last minute to go on the train as we hadn't known about it before going to Rabat. We really enjoyed our ride around the backstreets of Rabat and surrounding area with great opportunities to photograph Mdina from a distance. The fact that my door swung open every time we went round a corner only added to the fun!

This was a train ride that myself and my parents went on for 5 Euros each. We found it very enjoyable, excellent value for money. Best of all the train driver was incredible helpful, gave us some great tips for our visit to M’dina and Malta, including organising a horse tour for us around the whole city. Highly recommended!

Today some of our clients from the Mtarfa Training Centre for people with disabilities had a fantastic opportunity with the magic train tour around Rabat. We would like to thank the management and especially thanks to Vince the train driver for the great drive and care towards our clients.

Excellent service!!

The train takes 30 minutes to travel outside the walls of Mdina, through Rabat and Mtarfa. For 5 euro it's worth taking for the potted history and general lie of the land. Good views of Mdina from outside the walls.

What a great idea!! The train gives you a great overview of the area of Rabat and Mtarfa. Great value. Ideal way to see the area with a view to then choosing what to go and see in more detail at your leisure.
We have visited Malta a number of times especially Rabat and Mdina but we found out a few places we didn't know about to explore further.

Departs by the bus station at Rabat outside Mdina. It is €5 and lasts about 30 minutes. It takes you through Rabat and and Mtarfa with the recorded guide (in English and German) pointing out landmarks along the way. This was a truly wonderful way to start our day before exploring Mdina.

After spending the morning exploring Mdina we were ready for a sit-down yet wanting to see more of this beautiful & fascinating place. This activity achieved both simultaneously. We spent perhaps 45 min relaxing on the train while taking in & photographing all the sights from the top (Mdina) and then circling it. We had been looking out for places my late father had mentioned in his wartime diaries and earlier we had found the Connaught Centre in Mdina. On this long ride we saw the old naval hospital at Mtarfa. The friendly driver (Vince?) was happy to pause for a few moments to let me get a few shots. A most enjoyable trip with brief relevant commentary. The train was part of ticket covering several other activities: Nat Hist Museum (in the Connaught); Roman Villa; Catacombs. Good value ticket bought from Tourist Info Office.

Those without kids might tick this off their list as "not for us", but don't ! It's a great way to go round Rabat, especially if you have already been walking around Mdina and the heat is getting to you. The commentary gives a good detailed description of what might interest you and you can visit the place later after the train tour. You also get to see the local side of the village. Look out for villagers sipping tea with their pet birds in cages in the main piazza and wave to the local kids who eagerly wait for the train to wave to the tourists. Enjoy!
