Without doubt this is best place to start a tour of Mdina, it’s a stunning part of the walled city which frames the entrance to this hidden gem in a truly magical way. It does get busy and the road nearby is absolutely plagued by people in cars, busses and taxis entering/exiting the area. So definitely be careful around there, in terms of general busy nature of the place, there’s plenty of space around so take your time and definitely take time to enjoy the view!

This gate has been the main entry gate of the walled city since ancient times back to thePunic-Roman period. Having walked around the entire city, it’s definitely the biggest of all the extant gates. The design of the gate has changed over the centuries and the present structure dates back to when the island was ruled by the Order of St. John. The gate is Baroque, with banded pilasters on either side acting as jambs. Above the gate is the coat of arms of Grand Master António Manoel de Vilhena, carved in relief. The gate is entered via a bridge over the moat, the depth giving an indication just how seriously the designers thought about the defence.

The gateway to the old city of Mdina is Baroque in style but it has not always been this way. Access has changed over the centuries, often modifying its defensive function. Today what we see is the model from the early 1700s.

It is a very beautiful door and a symbol of Mdina and, in general, of Malta. Crossing the stone bridge gives access to the historic center of the city. She also became famous after appearing in one of the seasons of Game of Thrones as part of King's Landing.

Walk from the bus terminus, through a garden and discover this photogenic gate. Look down ,where they have created some pleasing gardens in what ,I presume ,was once a moat and the bridge was maybe once a drawbridge.
Walk though the gate and feel like walking back in time.

The stop for Mdina is "Rabat Saqqajja Bus Station" (although Google Maps says Telgha). The display on the bus itself only says Saqqajja, I was expecting Rabat. Luckily the whole building complex greets you, so you can't miss it. In December, however, there were only a few tourists on the bus (which continues to Dingli). This impressive gate is the only entrance to the car-free city.

We stayed in Mdina, Malta at the beautiful Casa del Tesoriere. The quarantine stopped us and our group after two days but we still loved the country and the Silent City.

We were a group of travellers from Canada, and visited the beautiful old city of Mdina on our trip to Malta. Walking through the main gateway is a wonderful introduction to Mdina. Visit the narrow cobbled streets, and soak in the atmosphere of ancient Malta. So much culture to absorb-you will discover the history of the Knights of St John and their contribution to the development of Malta.

This entrance gate used to be the only way to enter Mdina.
Even until today, we still can see the grandness of this ancient city from this gate.
However be careful here because it is quite small and if there is car then the space for pedestrians will be much smaller.

Alway travel to Mdina when in Malta. Buy some beautiful Mdina glass to bring home. Walk the narrow streets. Visit the museum and the beautiful church. Walk to the end and look at the beautiful scenery below the fortress walls.
