If you are visiting Malta or you recently moved here, you really have to take on this opportunity. Even if you never rode before or you are anxious, that shouldn't stop you, because Mario will choose the right horse for you in order to be safe. All the horses are gorgeous and friendly and they're all named by drinks. Me and my boyfriend choose the sunset ride and the experience was out of this world. It takes a while to get used with the horse and the feeling when you begin the ride, but once you accommodate, the views you see and the feelings you get are inexplicable. We went up on the coast and even if the road was pretty rusty, we were completely safe during the whole ride.
Tip: make sure you have long pants so that you're more comfortable on the horse and if you want to bring your personal items on the ride, wear a cross-body bag.

Really nice idea for a couple or friends. Brilliant views. We did the sunset ride, which lasted an hour and a half and you really get your moneys worth. I am not a confident rider, however the owner was happy to walk with me. Okay - there isn’t a great deal of health and safety taken into account but live a little! The horses are very safe anyway so I had no reason to worry even being a little worried of horses myself. Would 100% recommend for a different view of Malta and some fantastic views/photos.

First, the communication from Mario in advance of my trip to Malta was good although I had been given an arrival time of 5:20pm when perhaps it should have been half an hour later as the ride was not until 6. This didn’t bother me too much as I was on holiday.

I arrived at the stables and saw all horses in the yard ready to go. The yard was spotless and so was the kitchen/office area.

I am not an experienced rider but like to go on a ride if I can do when I’m away. I explained this to the staff. The ride was full, there was a young teenager who had riding lessons at home but everyone else was inexperienced most either having not been on a horse before or 10-15 years ago.

I was surprised there was no paperwork to complete but we were all fitted with helmets and taken to the yard where we were assigned our horses and helped onto them. The group were all quite small so I was assigned a quite large horse Jack.

In the yard, one of the other riders was helped onto their horse and was given guidance regarding his feet in the stirrups but not about what to do with the reins. He must have pulled hard on them as the horse ended up on the floor having fallen over and thrown the rider off. Mario told me he was relieved the horse was ok as if it had hit a certain part of the horses head it could have killed the horse. Mario got on the horse to reassure rider horse was safe and gave instructions re: reins.

My horse was then lead out of yard to wait to leave, other horses followed. I had short reins which the horse pulled against and I lost hold of. I shouted for assistance but no one was to be seen for sometime as all the staff were in the yard and no one overseeing the horses on the drive.

After this I was linked up to one of the staff on a lead, he had two other riders on leads and we were at the back of group. The other staff member rode at the front of the group with 3 or 4 others on reins. This meant there was no one available to deal with any issues or provide support.

We left and went up the road and onto the trail through park. The trail itself was nice.

I found the ride dull from a riding experience perspective, the staff member who had my rein spent time flirting with two girls either side of him. Prodding one of the horses in front of him from time to time as it wasn’t keeping up with the rest as the rider hadn’t been told/didn’t know how to use their feet.

The two girls on the leads with me we’re not even holding the reins which gives you some idea of the energy levels of the horses.

Part way road, I asked if I might come off the lead which I did. I have never been on a lead when I have ridden on similar trips before.

My horse though wanted to be at the front and left path to get to the front. What happened next I found scary, I felt the horse stumble and then he reared up, I fell to one side of saddle and then came off the horse. My foot got stuck in one of the stirrups and the horse dragged me along the ground before I freed my foot.

The horse then took off and the staff were then faced with getting things back on track as they were both tied up holding reins. They had to ask me to hold reins of my horse once I’d got up off the floor and got to it whilst one of them took all the reins.

Luckily I did not break anything but was hurt. I decided to finish the ride on lead although I was asked if I wanted them to get Mario to collect me.

Back at the yard, I got some iodine spray on my grazes.

Overall, I just felt like safety wasn’t taken seriously enough with staffing or instruction and this presents a danger to both humans and horses

Complete waste of time and money. I have read some good reviews and saw some nice photos with horses near the sea, but nothing I read or saw was true. It's an hour horse ride, you don't come close to the beach or sea at all, no one is guiding you or talking to you. So, these photos with horses near the beach you will not experience..

Excellent staff. And horses are well kept and in tiptop condition. Only 5 mins walk from golden sands bus terminal and the radisson blu hotel.. a must if you love a nice slow paced horse ride. I haven’t ridden for 25 years and “jack the horse” was very well behaved as a leading horse.. stunning trails with outstanding views including golden sands and Gozo. Plus the sunset. Highly recommend..

I hadn't ridden for many years, but decided to book a 90 minute sunset ride at Golden Bay while in Malta. I was a bit nervous and was paired with Brandy, who was an absolute gentleman! Honestly, if I could have fit him in my hand luggage, I would have had to bring him home 😁
Mario was absolutely amazing, from the booking process weeks before I flew out, right up until the end of the ride. He is so knowledgeable and passionate, and his dedication is evident. He knows every single one of his horses so well and I loved hearing about their individual stories. Having had horses when I was younger, I can definitely vouch for the fact that these horses are extremely well loved and cared for. They were all in such beautiful condition and very relaxed and happy.
Mario walked out with us on foot and ensured that we were all safe and comfortable at all times. His quick wit and banter took my mind off any nerves!
The scenery is just divine and the sunset took my breath away.
A 90 minute sunset ride cost 40 euros, which I think it exceptional value for money.
Whether you're a beginner or advanced rider, I would highly recommend Golden Bay for an unforgettable experience!

Despite the weather (terrible rain and wind) my boyfriend and I had a fantastic ride for my birthday! It was his first time around horses and the staff were great at making him feel comfortable and secure. The ride itself was beautiful and the horses were excellent - perfect for beginner and experienced riders! If we're ever back in Malta, I would 100% book again.

Had a really great experience. It was our first time riding a horse and we had a 6 year old with us. They made us feel very comfortable and were very friendly. We really had a great time. The rates are very reasonable too. They even recommended nearby cafe for lunch and local dishes.

One of my favourite experiences on my trip to Malta. The experience is genuinely breathtaking. Highly recommend the sunset trip! My partner is a more experienced rider than I and the experience was adapted accordingly to both our needs even as a beginner. Staff were friendly and were great to get to know.
Keep an eye out for Troy the dog!
