This old Prison is part of the Cittadella museums package 5 euros for 5 small museum/attractions. You can also use the Heritage Malta or Malta discount cards here, maybe check out which ones might suit you before you arrive in Malta.
This little jail has had some famous/infamous prisoners in it's time, some bad Knights of St John, Grand Master La Valette no less and like another bad boy Caravaggio many have left their marks and drawings on the walls over the centuries. The boards are very informative with the quirks of this prison at the time with single cells, decent food and pretty hygienic for it's time. Only a few cells so it won't take long, well worth a visitin our opinion.

We only went in for a short time and didn't feel like it was anything spectacular. If we had paid extra, I might have regretted it. But maybe I have too high expectations, because we come from Heidelberg, Germany, and there is a student prison there that is much more exciting.

This was a fun little visit inside the Citadel at Victoria [Rabat to the locals]. The Knights of St John were not always good boys and had to do spells in prison. Some of the graffiti dates from that period. It is located appropriately enough beside the law court.

This is a small site that will not take you more than 30 min to visit, but is quite interesting to see some of the carved designs on the walls.

You're charged 3 euro but for what? IT is very small and you've seen it, felt it in 10 minutes. No special feeling and the so called wonders of prison grafitti can be done yesterday instead of 100's years ago.

This was built in the 1500s and was the main prison for Gozo. People were interred for years at a time and had hands/noses chopped off. The cells are about 6 feet wide by 8 feet long by about 10 feet high with a tiny window at the top to let light and air in. You can go into a couple of them and experience it albeit without having the door slammed shut.
It still has graffiti on the walls from the inmates and the noise of a bird singing outside must have been horrible for them.
The prison is well presented with lots of sign boards and information about it. We bought a ticket that would get us into several attractions far cheaper than the invidual price. So if you are thinking about visiting Gganjia too buy one of these tickets.
Access for disabled visitors is not very good as you have to go up a short flight of stairs to get to the jail cell level. But if you can manage some stairs it is worth it as everything then is on one level.
Well recommended

For €5, we expected a lot more. The place was interesting but not really worth the cost for ten minutes of browsing. Most of the cells are roped off so you can't even get a proper look.

A worthy little attraction, but not worth paying a standalone entry fee.
Basically just a corridor with rooms off it (like your hotel sans the modern plaster, (as long as your hotel is tres petit)).
Pay for the four-museum in one ticket and you can duck in here for a quick 10 mins.
Yes, I accept it's got cultural significance but that's not justification for not making it more appealing e.g.get some more info boards in there and even add a few waxworks/noises etc.

It's a nice and beautiful place. I wouldn't go there if I had known what it looks like before, though. Just nice

Learning about the many people who have been incarcerated in Gozo was incredible. There is one cell which is accessible to sit on the bed and try to imagine what it would have been like to be locked up 24/7 for up to 10 years. An amazing experience

Is this prison inside the citadel?
Written May 31, 2017
Yes it is and it is very easy to find. Go to the front of the cathedral, up the steps and turn left following what looks like a long balcony. It will lead you to the front door! I hope this is helpful!
