The citadel is around 5/6 mins walk from Victoria bus terminal. It's easy to find but does require quite a climb to get up to it (there is a lift from the Visitor Centre area but we didn't notice until we were going back down). It has been beautifully looked after and restored and makes for a lovely place to wander around. The views are great too. I recommend not using a map and just walk around all the little streets freely and see what you see (unless you have mobility issues or are unfit, in which case plan where you want to go).

We paid the fee so we could visit the museums but to be honest, I don't think it was worth it.

The citadel is very easy to reach and for free, you can spend quite a while strolling through the streets and exploring the citadelle. Afterwards, we went around the whole island with a taxi for a very good price, Maria Lourdes Formosa brought us everywhere safely and told us interesting things about the location and local customs. Very recommendable! (You can reach her on +356 9942 9274).

Definitely worth the climb. The views of the rest of the island & Malta are outstanding.
The building is amazing.
Make sure that you take a walk around the outside of the whole building.
Obtaining entrance to the building needs to be improved - you currently have to walk down a path way with a signing stating that the Citadel is closed for the day (ignore this) - you will find a small door way with a sign stating tickets available, make sure you go in - don't miss this place.

Best part of Gozo, walled city is well preserved and it’s nice to wander around the small streets. Not a big place, easy to walk around and take it all in within 40 mins. Some views over Malta but nothing breathtaking.

This huge citadel is overlooking Rabat and surroundings. It's an enormous structure - do not miss it when visiting Gozo. The walls are thick, the views are very good on a clear day. Behind the walls you will find a small city with its own streets, church, old prison, museum and so on. The whole citadel complex dates back to early 17th century - a lot of information can be obtained at the visitor centre, but if you don't have much time, just wander around and enjoy.

I visited the Citadel very early morning. One office in the Citadel had the door open, and there were two men chatting inside. I politely knocked, said hello, and asked if I could have some tap water, as stores in town were still closed.
One of the men (see attached photo) jumped from his desk, rapidly approached me threateningly, and angrily shouting "Get out, get out!". A surprising, scary, and outrageous reaction from Catholic staff, that left me with bitter memories of the Citadel. A shame!

We were on the red bus tour and we made the biggest stop here. Narrow streets lead us to the Middle Ages. From the Citadel you can see magnificent landscapes throughout the island of Gozo. And something important: there is not a single stall inside that spoils the spirit in this place.

We visited Gozo in late December 2021, at the start of Malta's Omicron wave. For COVID safety reasons, we did not enter any of the Citadel's buildings (not even the cathedral). Even so, the outdoor parts of the Citadel were easily a 5-star attraction on their own. You can climb to the top of the fortifications, from which you get amazing views of the Gozoian countryside. It has all of the old town charm and photogenic narrow passageways of Mdina while also being a three dimensional puzzle to explore.

This tower is located a couple of streets away from Independence Square. It's a steep climb up the street to get to the Citadel and doesn't look wheel chair accessible.
The Citadel is massive. You need at least 1 hour minimum to really take in this place and explore properly.
The view overlooking Rabbat and surrounding areas is gorgeous. It's a solidly built structure from centuries ago.

If you happen to visit Gozo be sure not to miss visiting the Citadel.

The Citadel is the place to visit in Victoria, Gozo. It's a magnificent fortress rising steeply above the surrounding countryside and is visible from nearly all the Island. The hill has been developed since Neolithic times and was a sanctuary from attack by Barbary Corsairs and Saracens.

The Citadel is free to wander around the magnificent walls and grounds with fabulous views all around the surrounding countryside for miles and miles. Unfortunately, the museum was closed due to Covid when we visited but just wandering around the site was well worth the visit. A must see in Gozo.
