About
Tal-Massar Winery is a cherished family-owned boutique winery nestled in the historic village of Għarb, Gozo. Our story began in 1934, when gozitan immigrant Carmelo Hili returned from America and first founded the winery. Nowadays, third-generation vintner Anthony Hili and his wife Marisa, continue preserving the winery's legacy into the 21st century. Our vines are planted in terraced lime calcareous soil which limits their productivity, but ensures the best quality grapes. In fact, we only produce twenty thousand bottles of wine from a single harvest. Every year, we produce a range of IĠT and DOK Gozo wine from grape varieties such as the indigenous Maltese Girgentina, Vermentino, Nero d'Avola, Syrah, and Merlot.

The place may not have a lot of vines to show but this totally is replaced with a great countryside and sea views all around and a tranquil and quiet atmosphere.

The owners take good care of the property and are very proud of their product, which they should be because both were amazing and delicious. Apart from the 4 different wines to be tasted (white, red, rose and port), and let me tell you he leaves a bottle of each between 4-5 persons, they also a prepare a fresh and tasty platter with salami, ham and different types of cheeses that pair well with the wines being offered.

The wine tasting session starts at the winery with the owner explaining a brief history of the land and family and then during the wine tasting the owner gives an insightful description of the wine and its colour, the taste and how it is produced and with what grapes and with which food to be paired. They are very welcoming, they show the love for hosting and are very patient even with little children interrupting them (which we were very grateful for)

A truly remarkable and well worth price for the service provided. I will visit again and will surely recommend. Thank you

Anthony, supported by his wife and daughter, were incredibly hospitable and generous in the experience they provided. It included a tour and history lesson of the winery, followed by a wine tasting with generous food accompaniments. The timing of the event was perfect for a late lunch/pre dinner kick off and provided impeccable views of the surrounding neighbourhood. Anthony’s knowledge and warmth was incomparable, this experience is definitely a must do on any trip to Gozo!!! Could not recommend a trip here more, the wines were also of incredible quality!

Excellent experience. Anthony, his wife and children were wonderful hosts. Learnt a lot about wine making. The tasting experience accompanied by some beautiful meats and cheeses was exceptional. I would highly recommend this to anyone looking to understand the Maltese agricultural experience or to have a very nice glass of wine.

This was my third winetasting at Tal Massar Winery in Gharb on Gozo. I've been in 2018 and 2022 before. I love following their progress in winemaking. This winetasting was just as good as the previous ones. In winter, they have it indoors and, in summer, outdoors in a lovely setting overlooking the valley. I love that Anthony tells the story about his vineyard with the same passion as he did the first time I heard him. The climate has changed during the years, so he has adapted his vineyard by growing indigenous vines better suited to the hot and dry climate. Still, he produces excellent and award winning wines. Tasting as good as ever. Personally, I fell madly in love with their new port "Livia" that tastes like a warm sunset feels, sitting on a porch in the autumn. I also really like their new labels with quotes. I will definitely return every time we have new friends over on Gozo because this winetasting is an experience not to be missed. Of all the things we did on Gozo during this trip, this was what my friends appreciated the most. Thank you, Anthony!

We enjoyed an excellent and enjoyable wine tasting evening with Anthony, the owner of the vineyard as the host. After a brief introduction to the history of the vineyard and the wines that it produces, we tasted three wines and one fortified dessert wine with accompanying food. There were generous servings and all over a two hour period, with no rush to leave. We actually had to enquire about purchasing some wine, unlike a lot of other vineyards where the evening finishes with a “hard sell". Definitely to be recommended.

The tour was amazing. We loved the wine and the information about it. We tasted 5 amazing wines and also are some food pairings.
It was a windy day so the tasting was inside - so it's a great thing to do even if the wheater is not the best.
We had a little trouble finding the enterance to the winery and went around it but there was so many helpful people who helped us out.

We visited for the wine tasting yesterday and enjoyed the experience. The introduction to the vineyards was very informative as was the explanation of the different wines. Anthony was very willing and able to answer any questions regarding the wines and the process. He explained well which wines matched the food provided as snacks to pair with the wines. We were a group of 3 and we had a bottle of each of the wines to share between us for the tasting except for the last sweeter red wine. The view was great and there was a lovely breeze in the evening sunshine. I enjoyed all the wines including the red wine which I do not usually drink or like. This red wine, however, was very drinkable and enjoyable.

We went with friends and joined a small group on a sunny Tuesday evening for the tasting. I have been to many wine tastings before, but I learnt more from this visit than I had from all the others. Anthony is incredibly knowledgeable about his vines and also very entertaining. The food that was paired with the wine was generous and beautifully presented, but do wait to be told which cheese to eat with which wine. We all enjoyed the visit and will buy the wines when we can. Some people are unwilling to drink the local wines but they probably tried the wrong ones. One of the food highlights is the sundried tomato. Yummy

This was an informative and highly enjoyable evening. A great selection of wines as well and a great platter of food, which were selected for pairing with each wine. Be warned this is not a simple tasting you get a full carafe of wine between a couple for each tasting, so well worth every penny and we bought 2 bottles to take home with us (excuse cling film over food platters in the photos as this was just to keep flies away)

Anthony and family provided my daughters and I with a wonderful evening of wine tasting. Not only did we get to taste 5 exceptional wines ( which included 3 full bottles) but were served with accompaniments which were perfect with the choice of wine we were on. After a brief tour of the vineyard which explained what grapes are used, how they are grown and how the climate affects growth and productivity.
We then turned to the tasting which was great, Anthony’s passion and love for the wine he produces really brings everything together nicely.
I left with having gained so much knowledge and understanding about his product and wine growing in general that I would highly recommend anyone else should try this experience.
