We decided to visit this museum as we had become very curious about Svan culture after a trip to Ushguli. I know most museums are based on artefacts (and it has a fair number of those) but I had hoped to leave with a deeper understanding of how people lived and survived, their rituals, social history, food, day-to-day life and customs etc. (The giant couldron for boiling sacrificial animals was the closest to this there was but that is about it). Maybe it was because we did not have a guided tour but I considered it 20 GEL (each) not particularly well spent.

The Svaneti Museum of History and Ethnography was closed when I visited so no choice but just to take photos of the exterior building and the nearby surroundings.

Although I had been told that I was not to miss this museum I was not expecting anything amazing. The collection of icons is superb and the early, some back to 5th century, of early illuminated religious manuscripts must be priceless. Cleverly they have a slide show running in the manuscript room to show close ups of some of the individual pages. Simply stunning. Lots of other church artifacts as well as Bronze Age items and many items of social history.
Not to be missed.

it's a good way to spend the time if it's raining. the museum is small - only one floor, but some of the exhibitions interesting.

The Georgian National Museum sets very high standards and this museum is a delight. The displays and selection of the objects in each category is excellent. Each well-presented room takes the visitor into another world and the senses are stimulated.

We didn't have enough time for Mestia but suddenly were passing by and decided to have a look at the museum collection. It's worth visit! I imagine how the goverment has invested into this building but now it's one of the best regional museums I have ever seen. A great collection of historic objects (coins, weapons, a silver jug of queen Tamar and so on), explanations in English and a unique exposition of photos of Svanetia dated the end of the XIX century. The visit can be short but bright and interesting. You will have the great view over the Mestia valley and Svan towers from the museum terrace.

Amazingly well-stored collection of items dating back to as early as the 7th century. Well-organized and beautiful setting.

I think everyone visiting the area should visit this museum. Things can be read online but it is also good to see the artefacts in person.

A must to visit! I love museums and exhibitions and visit them everywhere I go. Most important criteria for me are the exhibits themselves, the stories presented behind them and the conditions in which the exhibits are kept. For a regional museum all 3 criteria are at the highest standard in the Svaneti Museum of History and Ethnography so I definitely advise you not to miss it! The price in July 2019 was 10 Georgian lari (around 3 euro).
