Having parked the car on what seemed to be a very non noteworthy car park, we walked along a gravel path into a grassy area. After about 25 minutes of walking the landscape begins to reveal its hidden beauty. Breathtaking rock formations, crashing waves, every shade of green and plants galore. An absolute must to visit.

This is the easternmost point one can drive to on the island; beyond that only on foot and at one's own risk.
Once past Caniçal, the area looks a lot like the Canary Islands, rather barren but still very beautiful.
The blueness of the waters combines wonderfully with the dark rocks and the beige sand/vegetation, amazing photos!
Oh, and no tourist masses over there, another plus!

One of the most underrated parts of the island - the views from the coast are spectacular! The cliffs are completely bare showing the island's volcanic past and they fall straight into the raging sea, it's like scenery from a fantasy world. However, there's no facilities anywhere in the area so nobody wants to do tours round there. To get there you have to get past a recycling plant and a commercial port which is really offputting. It is such a shame that it is only a stopover for a photo call.

Thursday 17th June we were driving around the São Lourenço Peninsula through the wild and rugged landscape

We stopped at this Mirador which is located in the northern part of the Peninsula.

We parked up in the small car park area and went walking about. There is a viewing area,  with hand rails, to stand and admire the views. For those more intrepid visitors there were pathways, with no rails, further along the headland. The reward for their bravery was even more fantastic views.

We could see the outline of Porto Santo in the distance

This was definitely not for the faint hearted especially on a wild, wet and windy day like today. Would definitely recommend bringing a jacket with you, just in case. Having said that there were people walking around in vests and shorts.

Unique scenery in a landscape more like Scotland than the rest of this ‚tropical’ island. Walk to the end of the peninsula is easy to do, great views down the steep cliffs. Can be windy! Restaurant at end of the walk closed due to the pandemic. Remember to bring a swimsuit, there is a fine spot (small quay) down from the restaurant.

Takes a bit of a walk to get there, and it can get windy, but the views are amazing. One can feel the enormous forces at play that shaped the coast line and the whole island. The path is very well prepared and safe, simple normal shoes will do.

If you’d like to see the stunning panorama of crystal clear waters, waves hitting the rocks of Madeira, don’t hesitate to come - it’s accessible by car, doesn’t require a lot of hiking (although you could find yourself a track nearby), and is just fantastically beautiful.

Amazing landscape, different from anywhere else on Madeira. The cliffs are so high, the colours of the rocks so bright and the waves crashing far below so amazing. Great if you need some real fresh air or a new subject for photography

Fantastic hike with amazing views. If walking briskly can do out and back in under 2.5 hours. A must do!
