The Whale Museum in Madeira is currently one of the most innovative museums of its kind in the world. Holder of a valuable museographic collection, this space rigorously documents the history of whaling in Madeira. Through stereoscopic 3D movies and among models of whales and dolphins in full size, visitors can learn about the life of these fantastic creatures and their marine environment in a fun and interactive way. The Whale Museum also promotes research on cetaceans and its preservation and study of the history of whaling in Madeira.

Let us be honest, whaling is not great and while I respect the history on display I am pleased whaling is largely a thing of the past. Whaling from Madeira ended in 1982 and this museum tracks the history of this industry in its gory...More

As we are animal-loving Brits, the Whale museum was to be something we could visit to learn about cetaceans of the Madeira coastline although we knew we would have to see things about Madeira's whaling history aswell. The museum is positioned in the old whaling...More

We were staying in a Villa in Arco da Calheta and happened to pick up a leaflet about this Museum , having absolutely no idea whatsoever about the Whaling History of the Island. It took about an hour to get there, it was just about...More

I found the museum to be very educational. I have visited quite a few whale museums so far, but this one really stands out. The museum is very near Funchal, approx. half an hour drive. The audio tour is really detailed and it provides you...More

Great way to spend a few hours. Only 20 minutes by coach from Machico, its easy to find and has a surprisingly cheap cafe / restaurant that serves decent food. The displays themselves are great, we could have stayed another couple of hours. Very informative,...More

I had issues with the electric guide they provided me with (random restart of tracks, troubles with sync to some stations). The museum is not too big and the average time of visit (1hr 30m) is probably based on the lengthy, cheesy 3d movies looping...More
