Scenic riding tours on the beautiful black sand beach of Vík, South Iceland, with our wonderful Icelandic Horses. Please note we have a weight limit of 100kg / 220lb, and riders must be aged 10+. We ask you to arrive at the stable 15 minutes before departure. We offer easy-going rides perfectly suited for beginners and people who don’t go horse riding often, but we welcome riders of all abilities. Our horses are friendly and sure-footed, perfect to enjoy the wild Icelandic terrain. The tours are mostly at walking speed, but for those who are capable there is the chance to try some tölt, the special gait of the Icelandic horse.

Horseback Riding is really my wife's thing but being able to do it on Black Sand Beach was pretty spectacular. The guides were very nice and asked about each rider's experience and comfort level. The Icelandic horses are a bit shorter and squattier than those in the states and their trot is much smoother. Got to traverse a creek along with a light trot at the end of the ride. I'm not a big horseback guy but I was very comfortable the whole time.

My wife was thrilled and the experience was great!

What a great time! Super patient guides. We had four people with varying degrees of experience and they made everyone comfortable and confident. They were clear on what to expect, how to work as a team with your horse and laid out every step. Very kind people and beautiful horses and scenery. I also needed to switch my booking since the road was closed and they were super accommodating!

Personally I had never rode a horse and neither had my girlfriend, but I am fully aware how difficult they can be as my sister owns one. However, these Icelandic horses were incredibly tame, friendly and easy to ride.

Our guide was very friendly, informative and sociable. She answered all of our questions with as much detail as she could and speaks good English.

It cost us £50 each which is reasonable compared to the other horse riding excursions and we got to ride along the beautiful black beach's in Vik.

I highly recommend this service as it met all our expectations and more :).

Amazing riding tour on the black sands in Vik. Well kept healthy horses and excellent guiding. The tour started with a larger group. Everyone’s starting point and experience was addressed. The group was later split to two and we did galloping and tölting on the shoreline with our friendly guide Sanna who is also from Finland. Scenery is amazing!

We had allready made several rides during our trip to Iceland and the one on the black beach of Vik should be the pinnacle of our journey. It turned out to be the most expensive, the most boring and the less exciting by far! The horses seemed completely demotivated or too tired (overworked??), they barely walked forward. The guide was'nt able to put hers in any other gait than walk(!!!!). Even on the famous black beach we continued walking, no toelt, no galop. It was a real desaster! When we reached the dunes again to turn back to the stable we had to require from the guide to go back on the beach on our own to make at least one litte galop... That was it! 9000 ISK for 45 minutes of walking on horseback, one minute of galop... No further comment!! We only were sad, furious and completely fed up with this mad experience that should has been the highlight of our Iceland trip.

Dear Georg Thank you for your feedback. We are still a young business and are eager to learn from you how we can improve your experience. Therefore it is very important to us to hear how your trip with us was and what can be done better in the future. We care deeply about our horses and always take good care that each and every one of them is in good condition and health, mentally and physically . In your tour the situation was a little unusual and as your guide explained during the ride she became concerned about her horse, since it behaved in a very different way than usual. To try to make up for that she decided to step off and give you the opportunity to at least take a small gallop on the beach on your own, taking a video according to your wishes at the same time. We are very sorry to hear that the tour could not live up to your expectations, but hope to be able to welcome you back at a later time. Best regards - Vík Horse Adventure

We enjoyed an hour long horsebackriding trip in the beginning of March. It was an absolutely fantastic experience; the surroundings of Vik are beautiful and the stables are very close to the beach. We got to ride on two beautiful Icelandic horses (Hektor and Hitli, I hope I wrote it corrrectly) who were very sweet natured and seemed very relaxed and happy. Our guide made sure we were comfortable and it was very nice talking to her about Vik and Iceland; she was super kind.

Customer service is fantastic as well. We came up with the idea to book a tour quite late and were initially only available on a Sunday due to our other travel plans; while they do not usually offer tours on a Sunday they were more than willing to make an exception.

When Sunday came, the weather was unfortunately quite bad with heaps of snow and Vik horse adventures at their own initiative suggested it would be better for us to cancel as they were not sure we would enjoy the ride in the circumstances. They were able to make time for us very early the next morning; we cannot thank you enough. It was one of the highlights of our trip and I absolutely recommend anyone to book a tour.

This was an off-the-cuff decision my boyfriend and I made while in Vik. The day turned out to be gorgeous, so we took advantage of it and it was easily the best decision we made on our entire trip in Iceland. The owner, Hjordis, and her daughter took us out around the black sand beaches and near the cliffs. I had never ridden a horse before, and my boyfriend had only done it once before. Hjordis had us take our horses (Von and Skàlim) through a couple of practice laps to get familiar with them and get comfortable, and the whole ride turned out great. Hjordis took great care of us and told us of Icelandic folklore and all about the twelve Santa Clauses of Christmas. We will definitely be booking another tour with them the next time we go back to Iceland, and I highly recommend you try them out!

Called and asked for a quick ride for my 4year old daughter (who probably wasn't quite ready for one of the longer organized tours). Eyglô was very accommodating and arranged for us to come by at a time when they didn't have tours. She took our daughter through the stable to meet the horses (and pick which one to ride- she picked Von). She was very good with my daughter (who can be a bit shy). By the end of the trip, our daughter was talking her ear off. :-). At the end, she went and got a little treat for my daughter to give to the horse.

The trip was just down the road a bit and toward the black sand beach and back. It was the perfect length and pace for a young kid. If we were staying in the area, we would totally go back and do a longer ride with all of us.

Ps. If you do this, be prepared for your kids to be talking about Icelandic ponies all day long! :-)

My father fell off of the horse at the last stretch of the 'jogging' part of the ride. Not only did the horse not stop after my father fell off, his foot got caught and the horse dragged him 30 meters before anyone noticed anything. He was at the very back of the line. The guide that was supposed to be behind/beside him couldn't even control her horse and went in front of him, so no one even noticed him falling or being dragged by the horse. Worse is that my father had already once raised concerns about falling off just minutes before, and they STILL did not make sure to stay behind him and watch out for him.

They did nothing to help him afterwards, only asking if he was okay once or twice. There are no hospitals in Vik, the closest one an hour and a half to three hours away. They did not offer any assistance whatsoever. They were too afraid we would retaliate in anyway to even really look at or talk to us. They paid us no more attention as soon as the people from the next tour started arriving, as if they held no responsibility for the failures of their guides. After we finally got home and went to the hospital, we find that he has two fractured ribs. They are COMPLETELY IRRESPONSIBLE in both the guides and the 'trained' horses.

Their horses are not well trained at all. They don't listen to the commands they briefly tell you about, and once the horses see the other horses speeding up, they definitely don't listen to you, even if you harshly pull on their reins. I almost got jostled off a few times myself, and was barely able to keep my balance.

Everyone in my family has ridden horses before, and never was a company so irresponsible as theirs. Their directions are quick and they don't project their voices enough past the wind - and there is a LOT of wind and rain in Vik - to be properly heard. I just can't believe that the guide was not behind my father on the most dangerous part of the journey. It was clear looking at the guides that they also did not have full control over their own horses. When the horses saw the ones ahead of them speeding up, they did the same and you are really just along for the ride - and an incredibly bumpy one at that. Your entire body gets ejected off of the horse every time it jogs and leaves you scrambling to hold on, and even if you yank the reins tight the horse does nothing to slow down. Both my father and I tried, many times. They do not prepare you at all for what you need to do when the time comes.

No talk of refunds, or an effort to train the horse better, or covering any part of the medical expenses. They are lucky he fell on a beach or he would have definitely broken bones instead of fractured them. The experience itself was underwhelming already, as you only spend about 5 or 10 minutes max at the actual beach part, and the rest of the time is spent walking towards the beach. But the irresponsibility of the company is what really makes them a complete disappointment. Almost ruined the entire trip to an otherworldly country. I cannot even express my displeasure properly in one review.

We are sorry to hear you had a bad experience with us and we hope your father is recovering well. We give instructions at the beginning and during the ride to try and help everyone, as most of our riders are first timers or beginners. Guides try to watch throughout the tour to make sure everyone is doing ok, but we are only human and of course may miss something; we will learn from this and be even more careful on future tours. It is true there is a lot of wind in Vík, which can make hearing instructions harder, but it is no problem to just ask us to repeat if you didn't hear or understand. There is never any pressure to go faster if you don't want to, as it can feel bumpy to inexperienced and unbalanced riders - so we take multiple guides on each tour so that we can split up and some can remaning walking if they like - indeed, some other people did this on your tour and it would have been no problem for you and your father to join them. We also give extra instructions for those trying the jogging, but it is of course your responsibility to listen and follow them: guides cannot ride the horse for you. Horses are herd animals and any rider will have a hard to time to stop them if the rest of the group is speeding up, as you are asking them to stay back from the herd. Horses are not machines, and may react in their own way: this is an inherent risk of horse riding, and you accepted the risks by signing in for our tour. We do our best to choose calm and good-natured horses but beginner riders (by the very nature of them being inexperienced) may not always ride correctly - if you are "harshly pulling" and "yanking" as you suggest, maybe the horse did not like being treated so roughly. After your father fell a guide walked with him back to the stable and offered towels to clean up the sand, take time to talk to you and point out the closest hospitals, offer to call an ambulance or the local doctor, but if you repeatedly say you are fine, then eventually we have to take your word for it and continue with our day. We are sorry to hear that he was not fine, and wish him a speedy recovery. Best wishes from the Vík Horse Adventure team

I would highly recommend this for all ages. The horses are very gentle and well behaved. We rode with 2 guides down the beach and back. If you are up for going a little faster they are just ok with that and will guide you through it.
