14th February Valentines Day. Due to the weather, preventing others attending, they still ran a 2 person glacier cave trip in the severe snow. Katlatrack made sure we got to the glacier for a truly memorable and awesome experience in the two caves. Absolutely beautiful scenery in a snowy wilderness. Our guide (sorry can't recall his name) was fantastic and knowledgeable. On booking we thought it a bit expensive, HOWEVER after the trip we feel it was truly worth the price. A highly recommended unique experience, and one we will always cherish.

Our tour was amazing! From start to finish our guide Thomas was funny and answered all of our questions! Very informative loved seeing how beautiful this ice cave was! We even got 10% off our lunch (after the tour) at Black Crust Pizzera which was located inside the meeting point building for this tour!

Hello! Thanks for this great review! We appreciate that you have enjoyed the tour and Thomas' guiding. A good pizza after the tour is always a good way to get some more strength for the rest of the day! Enjoy the rest of your stay in Iceland, KatlaTrack Team

The tour picked up in Vik (they had changed the pick up location from what our res says, but was easy to find). The drive to the glacier/hike is about 45 minutes through relatively flat but bumpy terrain that provides some good views of the mountains and glacier. The hike itself is not challenging, but provides a neat experience as you hike over ice at times and have to dig your crampons in. Once at the ice cave, there is quite a wait as only 4 people can go in at a time; however, this meant we got great pictures of the cave and were able to ask a lot of questions during the wait. Very scenic and easily our favorite tour while in Iceland. Our guide, Sven, was phenomenal...funny, engaging, and extremely knowledgeable about all things Iceland. We opted for the earlier tour and were rewarded with great weather, while the afternoon tour was hit with a snowstorm.

We had an amazing time on the Katla Ice Cave tour with Katlatrack. We learned about this from Kyanasue's awesome Iceland Instagram and it was really the highlight of our trip!
The glacier hike part was great. It was beautiful but really easy enough pretty much anyone could do it. The ice caves were gorgeous. You felt safe and well guided, but the guide was not overbearing. Our guide was Thor and he was personable, knowledgable, and made you feel like things were under control but it still had some adventure to it!
Highly recommend!

Im March 2022 we (family, 2 adults & 2 teenage) booked the 3 hour fast track tour to the Katla ice cave. The drive to the glacier/cave took about 1 hour and was a little bumpy. The ice cave visit itself was amazing and our tour guide very nice and experienced. My wife, unfortunately got sick over night and couldn’t participate the tour.

A big disappointment was the absolute unwillingness of the manager to refund the tour price of her and keeping the entire money. Some sort of goodwill in such a case would have been appropiate.

Dear Oliver, Thank you for sharing your review after your tour with us. It means a lot to us. We are happy to hear that you found the tour guide nice and experienced. We are proud of our guides take best care of your safety. With short notice, we were informed that your wife sadly got sick and could not join the tour. Therefore, we could not sell or use that empty seat. That´s why we have cancellation policy and encourage our customers to buy travel insurance before travelling to Iceland. You mention that we kept the entire money, well we found out that you booked the seat for your wife on child price. Without a shadow of doubt, it was just a mistake, but we made no issue despite our cancellation policy is clear and you should have paid for an adult seat! We always try to be flexible and do our outmost to meet our customers’ expectations, but last-minute cancellation is always hard to deal with. As already mentioned, we cannot provide refunds if you cancelled within 48 hours of your departure time. We trust you understand. We really hope your wife is feeling better and you had a wonderful time in Iceland. Your comment has been discussed and we investigated the issue, we are making changes in the future to ensure we communicate better of our cancellation policy. Again, we are grateful to you, your feedback is an invaluable tool for improving our customer service. We hope we can welcome you and your family again in the future! All the best, Katlatrack Team

I booked this trip as a last minute replacement to another tour that was cancelled last minute due to weather conditions.

Logistics:
I booked this trip with a departure and drop off point inside Reykjavik. The pickup and drop off is with a modified van (See photo), which is good if you’re traveling in winter on difficult conditions (wind, snow, ice, etc) since you will have to cross the volcano range to the east of Reykjavik to reach Vik, where the tour actually commences. The roads on this crossing can get very bad with wind blown snow and ice, winds are also very high here. Most tours manage the Reykjavik to Vik transfer with a Mercedes Benz Sprinter bus that has regular snow tires. If conditions are bad, then most companies will cancel tours for those staying in Reykjavik but still operate tours for those already in Vik.

The Good:
Our tour guide was James, he was very knowledgeable about the glacier and the region in general. Very safety conscious but still gives you enough room to make it an adventure. You can tell he is very enthusiastic about nature and the Icelandic outdoors. He was very patient with the group and generous with the time he gave us at each stop. It was more of a “go at your own pace” rather than a “15 minutes in and out” type of tour. We got to see everything we wanted.

Regarding the glacier walk, tours are timed so that each group arrives at the glacier around the time the group before is leaving, so you essentially have the area to yourself (your tour group) for the time you’re there. This was in the low season in Feb/Mar, so I’m not sure about other times of the year.

The region around Vik is one of the most beautiful I’ve ever seen and I would definitely recommend anyone staying in Iceland to find a guide to show you the area.

The Bad: absolutely none!

Hello, thank you for great and extensive review of our tour! Our goal is that every guest would have similar good experience. We always emphasize the ample time for each stop, so people would not have the feeling of beeing rushed. :-)

We had an absolutely amazing tour with our wonderful guide Tamas! We chose the Katla Ice Cave Tour - departure from Vik option. This was not only one of the most magical things we did in Iceland, but one of our favorite travel experiences, ever. If you are visiting Iceland, you need to see the ice caves. They were breathtaking! Our guide, Tamas, was absolutely wonderful and so informative. We learned so much about the glaciers and the ice caves. He even offered to take photos of us (we usually don't like asking and it is so nice to have them after). The tour felt safe and easy, and the Katlatrack vehicle was comfortable and handled the snow so easily! We also enjoyed our stop at the black sand beach on the way back. If you come to Iceland, you absolutely need to do a tour with Katlatrack! Thank you for such a wonderful day, Tamas!

What a unique experience! The super jeep drive along a barren landscape leading out to the glacier was itself otherworldly, made all the more so by the rain and fog the morning of the tour (which actually added to the experience). Our guide, Eric, then led us on a short hike to the edge of the glacier, where we watched water pouring off the shelf of the ice some 30 feet above us and looked up at the cave entrance we’d soon be accessing. After several minutes waiting for the guides in the cave to give us the go-ahead, Eric led us up over the makeshift platform & ladder to the entrance of the cave. This required careful footing on the ladder, as well as a narrow, inclined footbridge and over ‘steps’ carved into the ice, all the while holding on to rope strung along at various points up to and into the cave. The interior of the ice cave was amazing--beautiful blue patterns on the walls’ surfaces created by the ice, and a short but exciting labyrinth of twists and turns through the cave made for a memorable experience. Many thanks to Eric and KatlaTrack for a thrilling tour!

We had an incredible time hiking up the glacier and exploring the ice caves with our guide for the day, Bjorn (not the actual spelling or Icelandic pronunciation, but a user friendly version of his name). On the way to the glacier he provided so much history of the natural forces at work shaping Iceland. Once we arrived Bjorn helped us choose exactly the right layers of clothing for our adventure - you can be cold at the start, but then it gets warm once you start climbing. He expertly guided us through deep snow and slippery ice to reach the most beautiful destination in Iceland. The blue ice, the snow peaks, the ice formations within the caves - were all among the most picturesque scenes we’ve ever experienced. We learned so much, saw so much beauty and came home with magnificent photos and memories. We could not say enough about how well taken care of we felt and how much we enjoyed this day.

Incredible experience with an amazing guide. Jonas was very knowledgeable and entertaining - going out of his way to give us a real adventure crossing rivers and dodging “quick sand” not to mention exploring the ice cave. Teenagers in our family especially loved the 4x4 experience. Excellent tour!
