My sister and I were in Iceland in March 2017, and I am so happy we came across Dyrholaey Riding Tours. We had a great experience from beginning to end. The stretch of beach we rode on was a private beach, so we were the only ones out riding on Black Sand Beach that day, and were able to go through the sand dunes. The scenery was misty, surreal, and breathtaking. The horses were very kind and so great to ride. We were both beginner riders and did not have any issues. Our guide Katie was wonderful and incredibly gracious. It was absolutely one of the highlights of our trip.

Katie, who led our private tour, was phenomenal in every which way. She is so friendly, warm, down-to-earth, and welcoming. She was very patient, answered all of my questions and taught me how to be comfortable riding the horse. The minute my friend indicated that she was uncomfortable at the speed, we immediately slowed down. Icelandic horses were gorgeous, well taken care of, and extremely well behaved. The property was out of this world! Prices were very reasonable - less expensive than a competitor that involved a group tour. We were out riding for two hours. Couldn't ask for anything more!

I was here during my summer holidays and wanted to go for a horse ride. This is a family business, so there are small tours and they try to give you the best possible experience. I'm an advanced rider and it has always been my dream to try the special gaits the icelandic horses have. The guide picked a horse that suited me really well and I was able to tölt along the beautiful black sand beach. It was a dream come true. I very much recommend this place.

Tour is led by 13 y/o & her 10 y/o brother. No introductions upon arrival. No instructions were given until we asked. We even had to ask our horses names. The little boy was supposed to ride in back for "safety" reasons but instead he rode in front of me and talked constantly to his sister. My saddle was not secured properly as it didn't seem the 13 y/o had the strength to properly secure it. 1/2 way thru trip, it began to fall off w/ me on it! The 10 y/o was no help as he didn't even notice. He didn't even try to help by holding his sisters horse so she could fix the saddle. There was no description of the area although I wouldn't have been able to hear it over the chatterbox. He talked to whole time & wouldn't shut up. There was no offer of having our picture taken and when my horse began to gallop, it was stopped right away. Although the scenery was gorgeous, it was boring just trotting along listening to the chatterbox. It could have easily turned into a nightmare with me falling off the horse. There was no apology and no thank you at the end. Do not recommend!

Dear Pigglywiggly, We are sorry to read this was your experience and have taken your criticism into consideration. However, if we knew you were so dissatisfied at the time management could have addressed your concerns professionally at reception prior to your departure. This is a small family run business and English is not our first language. Your guide was 18 years old despite her younger appearance and is an advanced rider, the „chatterbox“ as you called him is 13 years old, a capable rider who is just learning about tourism now for future summer job. We do our best to make our guests feel safe and comfortable. And by your description of a slipping saddle- your guide was professional and took care of your safety when you alerted her. When we have a beginners/mixed ability group we have to ride at the pace of the weakest rider which is usually walk and not more than a trot. Galloping in soft deep sand is hard on the horses so we only do it with advanced riders on a grassy track when it is accessible later in the summer. Wish you all the best.

My 3 teenagers, husband and self had a great time with Dyrholaey. It was a memorable experience riding on the private black sand beach. The cost is 8000 krona for 1 hour, which is a excellent deal for what is offered. Would definitely ride with them again, they are true professionals.

My sister and I don't have any experience riding horses, but Katie, our guide, quickly put us at ease. She patiently answered our questions while instructing us, and never pushed us beyond our comfort level. Riding on the private black sand beach was one of the highlights of our trip to Iceland.

I am not an experienced horse rider, but that was no problem for this family to take me on a trip through the beautiful black beach. My personal guide was Katie, who did everything to make me feel safe and give me a great experience. Very warm and kind meeting. They really took time for me. I definitely recommend this place!

From the moment we pulled up here, we felt so welcome: two lovely dogs (no barking, no jumping, just tails wagging) were the ambassadors, and the friendliness just continued with the people and the horses. This is a family-owned business that does not saddle up each horse for more than 3 hours per day, so they are happy, healthy, and exceptionally well-cared-for. We had the best time with this company! Katie, our guide, was incredibly friendly, welcoming, and knowledgeable, and put our anxieties to rest. The horses were beautiful, gentle, and very easy to ride. The black beach and crashing waves were like nothing we will likely ever see again. This was absolutely an A+ experience!

This was our second horseback riding tour in Iceland and it was incredible! Google maps was very accurate to find the location which is a working farm that also has some guest houses. Easy to check in, they provide helmets but we had our own gloves, hats, hiking boots, jackets, rain pants. The guides (all non Icelanders who were doing summer internships) asked about our prior riding experience and matched us up to the right horses who were all wonderful! Then we set off to their private black sand beach, splashing through small streams on our way. The guide let us trot several times on the beach, amazing experience with the waves crashing and view of the Dyrholaey arch in the distance. The guide took a beach photo of us on our horses which turned out great! We couldn't tolt because the horses need a flat surface to do this gait on but we had the chance to do that at a different barn so we didn't miss this. Would highly recommend this particular barn / tour - we had 5 in our group and it was just us. Good price compared to other horse activities in Iceland. The other riding tour in Vik seemed to have larger groups, it was very nice to have a private group.
