My husband and I hiked up Reynisfjall after getting some directions from the information office in Vik. The path is clear to follow from the town. We started in sunshine, then the clouds arrived and we hiked up in reduced visibility and rain. Then we we got to the "payoff" view of the black sand beach and arch at Dyrholaey and the clouds lifted for a really great view! The black sand beach itself was a bit of a tourist zoo so to have an elevated position to get some good photos was worth the hike. The cliffs were covered in puffins too which were very cute to watch. Recommended for a couple of hours hike.

This walk was awesome. Beautiful views of the ocean and the beach below. This "thing to do" should really be titled "Walking the Reynisfjall Cliffs". From Vik we walked up a dirt access road which took us to the top of the hills overlooking the ocean. Once we got to the top and walked through the gate, instead of continuing on the road we went left and walked along a goat path which followed the edge of the cliff. We spent about two hours on this walk -- one hour in then turned around and went back the same way. It is not hard...although the initial walk to the top is up a steep road and you will be huffing and puffing by the time you reach the top. But it is well worth it. We had a beautiful day and the views were spectacular. (It was a little hard to find the access road but a local in town pointed it out to us.)

We took this cliff walk in the afternoon after leaving the black sand beaches and eating lunch in Vik. We didn't have 4WD so we parked close to the base of the trail on the townside of the mountain by the welcome to Vik sign. The trail is really a wide gravel road uphill. You'll need a good pair of walking shoes. After the initial ascent, be sure to look for almost barely noticeable yellow markers to the left of the main path. This smaller path will take you much closer to the cliff edge where you can see an incredible swarm of birds. We didn't see any puffins there but it's quite an amazing sight nonetheless. The walk took about 3-4 hours with stops along the way to enjoy the views as well as the sheep and horses nearby.

Took very nice pictures on the black beach with the rock stacks in the background. The big waves sweeping the beach are a plus

Almost no one was there, so it felt very off the beaten path even though it's right out of town. Fun to skip rocks and see terns.

The road is off limits most of the time unless you have a Super Jeep or great four wheel drive. I would NOT go in bad weather. Walking is fine but a pretty good hike up hill. Top is incredible and view of Vik and ocean is unbelievable. Pictures were amazing. If you are in Vik ask about a tour or hike.

If you want to see unusual lava formations - basalt columns and black sand this is the place. Be careful of the waves - no swimming there!

Located near Vik village, Reynisfjall is actually tuff mountain formed as a result of a volcanic eruption from under a glacier. What impressed me most were the basalt columns on Reynisfjoru beach, a spectacular formation that cannot be missed when visiting the area.
