At first I thought the historic stave church had been in a fire, but learned that through the years it had been coated in tar to preserve the wood. The building is small but I am certain holds many stories if it could tell them...More

This museum describes the eruption in 1974 that almost destroyed this island. The best way to get a comprehensive picture of the events is to watch the video shown here (about 35-45 minutes), It is narrated in English and offer English subtitles for the interviews...More

its a short stop and is a norwegian replica of a stave church (the only wood structures were brought in piece by piece by the norwegians mostly). The island is very pretty and there are trees at the airstrip which they call their little forest!

It took less than 5 minutes to check out this replica of a Norwegian stave church. It's worth seeing but only because of the surrounding scenery.

We went to this very interesting museum as part of a tour. It covers the history of the volcano on this island in 1973. Part of the museum is an excavation of homes that were covered during the volcano eruption.

Great little place to stop. But once there the overwhelming smell of rotten fish drove us away! I'm sure it was the direction of the wind, but literally left as soon as we could.

This is a worthy, friendly family run old style museum totally transformed by Toti, the rescued puffin who's lived his whole life here. We had a fantastic time holding him, watching him and following him. Truly special ! The curator also had a recovering seagull...More

A day trip to Westman Island, off the south of Iceland, is a must if you visit Iceland. Take the 30-minute ferry to this small island - you won't be disappointed. One-third of the island was destroyed by a volcano 1972. We climbed the lava...More
