Whale Watching Tour from Reykjavik

The best chance to see some of the 20 species of whales that migrate off Iceland’s coast during peak season is on a guided whale watching tour. Your captain and crew take you to the spots known to have the most whales and provide plenty of information about wildlife along the way. Details like provided warm layers and motion sickness tablets make this tour stand out.

Half-Day Whale Watching and Northern Lights Combo Tour

Many Northern Lights tours turn west to Iceland’s interior—but this one sails out of Reykjavik Harbor for a combination whale and Northern Lights spotting sea journey. It’s a great way to see two of Iceland’s most beautiful offerings, and you’ll travel on a boat with viewing platforms, an indoor bar, and free Wi-Fi. Viewings of whales or the lights cannot be guaranteed, but trips can be rebooked  without an extra charge.

We did the whale watch tour with Reykjavik Sailors and all was well organised and we were good informed beforehand. The guide, Jonathan, knew a lot about all the species we ran into and gave us quite some information during, but also on the way back of the tour. An absolute must when in Reykjavik!

The staff were very friendly and the boat was spacious and comfortable. Unfortunately we didn't see any animals but that's always the gamble I guess. We were offered to return at any point in the future for a complimentary second attempt - which is nice but unusable for us as we had a full schedule.

We were really looking forward to our whale watching trip. We were very unlucky with the weather, so it was postponed until the following day. However, it was still too dangerous to go and we weren't able to fit it in before we left. Throughout this they were really communicative, helpful, tried everything they could to make it happen for us, and gave us a full refund without question. We'll be back some day and will definitely be using these guys, as they deserve the business. Thanks so much

Hi Henry ! thank you so much for the review, it means a lot to us! We unfortunately cannot control the weather and this winter has been pretty wild! We do understand though how it can be disappointing and we are trying to be as helpful as possible when this happen, so we are so glad you had a good experience with us! We hope to see you again in Iceland and that the weather will be better the time you do! Have a great day!

There are many reviews stating that no whales are seen on such whale watching trips but you must take a chance and give it a go. We were so glad we did! We booked a 3 hour Winter whale & dolphin watching trip with Elding from Reykjavik harbour, which at present runs twice a day at 9am & 1pm, weather depending. Wear warm clothing because the very best chance of seeing a whale or dophin is if you stand out on deck, however thermal overalls are provided. We were extremely lucky to see a Minke whale, which the boat tracked for some considerable time and some porpoises. The commentary is interesting and factual and there is a café on board.

.A few minke whales, seals and puffins. I went on a tour as a guest in 2010 and saw plenty of Minkes, dolphins seals and puffins. Yeras later I met up with a nephew who had a few hours to kill from Keflavyik. I asked him what he would like to do. He said he’d never seen a whale. We went out and he saw bits of 3 whales and bunches of puffins. We had a great bonding experience. He met several of my friends; Siggi and Steini. We all got along well but he only saw a bit of Iceland. I’d go with him again and we could explore really weird scenery plus meet some of the coolest concentration of interesting people on the planet in a small space.
