- Royce L1 contributionIcelandThis trip should be on everybody's bucket list! Reykjavik is the capitol of Iceland and offers much more than just an eclectic thriving city environment. Tons of interesting architecture with a Norse accent to it. Just about everything you would want to know about Vikings and Norsemen! There are too many waterfalls to name, all within a short drive. Each of the fjords offer a unique blend of native culture and culinary delights all around. Recommend this trip to anyone! Especially visit the Northern Lights Museum, Leif Eiriksson statue in front of the church! Lots more!Visited November 2022Traveled with familyWritten September 18, 2023

The Norse explorer in bronze stands on a huge stone pedestal with one foot put firmly forward, resembling his discovery of America, 500 years ahead of Columbus. Namely, it is believed Leif Erikson was the first European who set foot on North American soil, concretely on Vinland (today's Newfoundland) around year 1000. That's also written on the monument's back side, which was presented to Iceland from USA in 1930 in honor of thousand years of world's first Parliament - Althing which was formed in 930.Visited October 2023Traveled with familyWritten November 16, 2023

Iceland has a strong Viking history, part of their explorations and settlements. This statue can be found toward the center of town.Visited July 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten August 4, 2024

This is a really impressive and imposing statue and leads the eye into the cathedral. THere is so much amazing history and folklore about iceland. THis statue stops you in your tracks and is a very fitting entrance piece fpor the cathedral.

You are bound to pass this statue as it stands guarding the entrance to the Hallgrims Church.
As statues go it’s sort of ‘normal’ but the subject is iconic for this country and region so will a lot to many folks.
Unfortunately statues of people I find a little uninspiring.
Sorry

We saw the Statue of Leif Eiriksson at the same time we saw the church. It is a very impressive statue in it's own right and is also a great marker to orient you to the layout of Reykjavik. It is a wonderful place for a familly portrait.

We learned on our tour that the striking Hallgrimskirkja church was built behind the statue of Leif Eriksson, and perfectly so. The statue being a gift from the US in 1930 to recognize 1000 years of Icelandic Parliament. It's a beautiful and statue.

Definitely our favorite statue in Reykjavik, as it has so much history and character about it. It stands tall beautifully located in front of the city's most iconic church. Just a great work of art by the artist!

Imposing statue looking down upon a descending rainbow colored street. Very fitting since Leif Eiriksson is the famous viking in Icelandic history. He represents the bloodline and culture of Iceland even though he's a pagan in front of a Christian Church,

It is located at the end of Skólavörðustígur street and in front of Hallgrímskirkja church is one of the best-known landmarks in Reykjavik. Leifur Eiriksson is the best known hero of Viking age Iceland and the first European to arrive in America: Leifur’s voyage to America in the year 1000 preceded the Christopher Columbus’ voyage by almost 500 years. The statue was a gift from the USA. Definitely a beautiful statue situated at a strategic location in the city in front of the most imposing building in the country. Selfie location for sure.
