About
Reykjavík Museum of Photography - Capturing moments, then and now. Reflecting the contemporary, while archiving the past – this is Reykjavík's home of photography. Reykjavík's main photography museum offers an ongoing programme of contemporary and historical exhibitions and an onscreen archive of thousands of images from the past. New work from Iceland and abroad reflects where photography is now, while extensive archives from 1860–2000 give an insight into Iceland's changing culture and society over more than a century. Reykjavík Museum of Photography is part of Reykjavík City Museum: One museum in five unique places. Welcome!

Not so much a museum as a small gallery. We were surprised by the lack of photographs when we visited (17/8/22! Some of those seen were lovely but about half were of people involved in the project which is very much about connecting with nature. Although we were rather disappointed overall, there was a really thought provoking video, in a low key style, which reflected the impact of unsuitable mass tourism, such as huge cruise ships, overwhelming waterways on this lovely island. Worth visiting just to see that.
Worth knowing that it is not well signed but is actually located in the library on the 6th floor of the building next door to the Art Museum.

This is a wonderful photography museum. It’s small, but packed full of photographic art of local and historical Icelandic culture. They offer a lovely gallery as well as thousands of photographs you can view electronically. They have a sweet gift shop with high quality books and gifts. The staff person was a delight - welcoming, informative, and kind. And bonus: they have a nice, clean water closet. Highly recommend spending and hour or so here!

Had high hopes for this museum, but was disappointed. Not sure if I happened to choose the wrong date with the wrong exhibit, or if this is a permanent exhibit. Was in and out in about 5 minutes, in part because the space itself is essentially two small rooms tucked away on the sixth floor of the building. I think that they could do much better.

We not only enjoyed the exhibition on at the time, but also photographs from the past showing Reykjavic in times gone by. Was most enjoyable.

It's somehow inaccurate to call this place a museum. It's more like a big hall where works of certain photographers, most of which are contemporary, are shown. There is nothing at all about the history of photography as one may expect. But it is still a good place to explore for a while if photography really interests you.

Sep 2022 - this is located on the not a museum but a one room display. We were surprised that it was only one photographer's work being displayed given it was called a photography museum.

The display we saw (photos of empty workspaces in Iceland - no people) was ok but not worth 1125 kr per person (US $8). We had read in various guide books/blogs that this museum on the fifth floor was free. It must have changed relatively recently since so many sources said free. It was priced appropriately at free.

The museum is very small and, in my opinion, not worth your time and ISK1000 admission fee. There is only one room with perhaps 2 dozens of photograps (without any description whatsoever) and some more than you can on a screen. I left very disappointed. Can't recommend.

It's not for free anymore, entry costs KR1000, that's why we decided not to go there but they have three screens at the entrance where you can see old pictures about Reykjavík and Iceland. A good place to warm up and to use the facilities.

There weren't many photographs on display but those that were available were good. I feel that the limited number of photgraphs available reduced the experience.

The Reykjavík Museum of Photography is small and located on the top floor of the Reykjavík City Library. Take the elevator at the right after entering the building. Admission is only 1.000 ISK and there are changing exhibitions.
I really enjoyed "Metamorphosis" and "Small World" by Sigurgeir Sigurjónsson, especially since I recognized some of the Icelandic locations he chose, and the portraits of people from aropund the worlds were very interesting. All in all I spent an enjoyable hour inside the museum.
