About
There is one word above all others that screams 'Reykjavik Nightlife': Kaffibarinn. Not everybody loves the place, but everyone knows exactly where it is and would be sad if it ever closed down. But there is very little risk of that, if the queues outside are anything to go by. Kaffibarinn (along with dearly departed Sirkus) is probably THE place responsible for creating Reykjavik's party town reputation. Its heady mix of hyper-uber-cool music, people in trend-setting clothes, late night drunkenness and not nearly enough space for all the dancing sweaty bodies... well, that's really what it's all about. The place is open for coffee and a nice happy hour prices on beer during the day, they do not serve cocktails but have a nice range of gin, vodka and whiskey. Disc jockey every night with various music. Mostly House during the weekends. They do not like photography inside the bar, it has been like that for many years and they do like their privacy. It´s nothing personal.

This place was recommended by a local Icelander. During our visit to Reykjavik we found this place it was a rainy day. Instantly as we got inside it was very cozy. The male bartender wasn't the nicest however the waitress I think her name was Rebecca was very lovely and friendly and made up for the rude bartender. We saw Whale on the menu and wanted to try a sample to see if we would like it Rebecca allowed us to try a sample of the whale, though we didn't like it and opted to order something different from the menu we appreciate her allowing us to try it. The food was really good and one of the best we've had for our entire trip to Iceland. overall I would rate this place an 8 of 10. the facility is nice and clean over all. Thanks to our waitress for making our stay memorable.

The bar was very cozy. Lots of people sitting around chatting and having a beer. I would imagine it's very easy to meet people there. The lady you check in with at the front was really nice and offered us their refreshing daily special. Everything in Iceland is set up by the area. If you're sitting in Area B, for example, you should use the Area B bathroom.

Nice place, good vibe (from the customers). Really cool music.

However, as other reviews have noted here, they REALLY do not like people taking photos! We took one picture (just of ourselves, not of other customers, the staff or even the bar itself really). A woman seemed to instantly pop up out of nowhere to rudely snap at us.

I don't have any issue at all with the no pictures rule, I even quite like the idea, but it shouldn't be so difficult for them to either put up a sign warning people in advance -OR- to inform people in a polite manner if they make this mistake! I'm almost left wondering if they either want to upset people on purpose (maybe to keep the place 'edgy' or to discourage tourists?) or they just really enjoy snapping at people!

After being told off, we happily immediately put the phone away and cheerfully, politely asked - out of genuine interest - why they had this rule. Rather than an even semi-polite answer the woman took this as another opportunity to be rude and snapped "it has always been this way. I do NOT ask questions!"

All a bit strange really, particularly given how friendly nearly everyone else was in Reykjavik. The bar itself is very cool and well worth a visit, just a shame I'm reduced to moaning about the camera incident when I could have just been raving about the place! So, recommended for a visit (but keep your camera/phone in your pocket!).

My husband and I stopped here on our first night in the city. The bartender was rude and short with us. We spent a full 5 nights in the city and this was the only place that had someone like that. Icelanders are very nice, but since this was early on our trip we were a little worried at her rudeness. I think with comparable prices, atmosphere and selection I would just go elsewhere.

Actually this review is not about food/drinks/service (this is a normal bar as billions in the world), but about general atmosphere/clientele, that according to me is part of the overall quality of a place. We entered Koffibarrin as it seemed to as a normal pub where to drink a normal beer. We couldn't know it is considered by people the "coolest" place in Reykiavik by local people, a sort of icon. So "cool" that you have to wait ages to have your beer (at 11.30 pm still few people inside), waiting for the bartender to end quitely her chat. So "exclusive" that more than one people (owners? guests? who knows) came to ask us where we read 'bout the place ("someone told you? is in some guide?") and complaining that "this is a place for icelandic people, not tourists"). We were just drinking a beer in a corner, but we felt guilty for this. The resons maybe is that we had no macbooks with us and no beards on our faces. Now I discover on tripadvisor that is also forbidden to take any photo inside, but i didin't see any fresco on the walls.

Saturday evening bartender was the worst welcome I’ve ever received at a bar. Similar reviews seem to suggest I’m not alone with this.

People seem to love this place...but I am convinced people like it because they think they have to like it. Also, I think it is because they were so sloppy drunk they don't remember that they actually didn't like it. Maybe I am getting too old for this...but the music is horrible disco trash, the drinks are overpriced, you typically have to wait ten minutes in line to get in, it's so loud you can't have anything close to a trashy conversation, and it's so crowded you can't move to get out or dance. Every time I have been everyone was incapacitatedly drunk where every conversation was a loop of the following words, "Beer? Yeah, beer! Fun? Totally! I love you, bro'. Beer? Yeah, beer! Fun? Fun! I love you, bro'!" I like a good crunk loud rawkus session but this place is so preppy lame and frankly outdated... Honestly, if I want to wake up with unexplained bruises, dirty stories, and someone I don't know next to me... I normally avoid Kaffibarinn and hit up the Bakkus. Though, maybe it's because I have a weakness for ping pong. Yep.

Came here with some new found friends as I’d heard it was one of the must see bars in Reykjavik.
Had Only been in the city a few days and we’d marvelled at how friendly the loacals all were. Surely all Icelanders couldn’t be so friendly. If not where did they keep there quota of grumpy folk. Well we found the answer. They all work here.
From the moment we entered we were made to feel at best tolerated. My choice of beer was mocked, an attempt at conversation with the bar staff was rebuffed and when a member of our group mistakenly went to take a photo we were put firmly in our place.
The whole vibe is weird from the posters in the toilet to the message on the chalk board declaring Damon Albarn doesn’t own this bar (never said he did, we know it was just a marketing ploy)
Love everything about Iceland apart from this place.
I took one photo in the loos just to be a rebel.

My wife and I popped in for 'Happy Hour' about 6:30p (runs from 3p to 8p). Great little spot, good music. Cozy place with plenty of seating.

This coffee bar is the best in Iceland. With a mix of international guests and people from Iceland, the atmosphere is genuine with a moral on a pleasently low level!! They also serve alcoholic beverages, have very good music (live as well as DJ:s) and does not close until early in the morning!
