We spent the most amazing day being driven in an enormous superjeep by the very lovely Ludwig through the beautiful landscape of Iceland.
An early pick up from our hotel and a quick stop en route to collect another couple, we were on our way through a snowy landscape and slow sunrise.
First stop Strokkur Geyser, an incredible sight which we were lucky enough to see spout twice I. Quick succession. Wonderful landscape of big land and sky with well designated footpaths and safely fenced off areas of steaming hot pools. The restaurant/gift shop area was very clean, bright and friendly with some high quality merchandise and good quality food & drink.
Back into the Superjeep, an enormous beast made from two huge American Ford vehicles. The Jeep was very high and extremely comfortable. The tyres could be deflated and inflated from the drivers controls as we motored and he saw the need for better hugging of the snow and ice covered roads. We motored along at a pretty fast pace but felt very safe with the more the competent Ludwig at the wheel.
Ludwig was very patient, knowledgeable and friendly with great in depth knowledge of Iceland, it’s history and environment. It was a fascinating trip as he told us about his country, everything from farming and politics to thermal power and food. An excellent companion for the day and a wonderful
Ambassador for his country.
We drove through fairly wild weather conditions to the glacier where Ludwig arranged for our extra clothing and kit. A thrilling experience in near white out conditions - very cold but definitely an experience not to be missed !
Back in The Jeep, Ludwig hurtled is along to the breathtakingly beautiful Gullfoss falls. Dropping us at the upper level car park , we enjoyed a delicious late lunch I. The excellent cafe and shop before slowly winding along the route to the waterfall. There are a couple of viewing areas from which to see this spectacle and one can descend the steps to a lower platform and decking. Kindly Ludwig has driven round and down to the lower car park area to collect is and head on our way.
Being early January, daylight was at a premium and as we arrived at Þingvellir National Park, the sun was slowly beginning to go down. How beautiful and peaceful a view overlooking the site where an ancient parliament met. Once again Ludwig told us about the history of the place, making it all come alive.
We headed back to Reykjavík( re-inflating the tyres as we hit the tarmac through the snow )
A most wonderful day filled with awesome sights of snow, ice, steam, water and the biggest of skys - breathtaking Iceland !
A must do experience for any traveller and we enjoyed it all the more because of the snow and darkness which made it feel even more spectacular .
