I've been following JS on social media and reading about them on watch blogs for a long time. As most others mentioned Gilbert is a one of a kind person and talking to him is an experience all its own. I was fairly confidant I wanted to add a JS piece to my collection, so we stopped into the shop on my first day in Iceland. Gilbert gave me a master class on Iceland and explained the inspiration and stories behind all of his designs. I decided on the light colored Islandus Dakota C-117 and Gilbert agreed to hold it for me on my word - no deposit just trust that I would be back in a few days. He also said he'd bring in the dark faced one as it was still being crafted. In the end, I went with the white, and it was an absolute pleasure doing business with them. I could listen to his stories all day. He's a great ambassador for Iceland. Even if you aren't a watch fanatic I urge you to stop into "probably the world's smallest watchmaker" and let Gilbert give you a deeper appreciation for Iceland. Plus you can see all the celebrities who have been in his shop.

My husband and I were just strolling down Laugavegi and we happened to be on the side of the street of this store. My husband dropped his mouth and we immediately went inside.

Gilbert's son was very nice to show us watches and didn't make any assumed notions. When we first heard the price, we admit, we were taken aback with the price. We looked a little more and left the shop.

Half way down the street we spoke about what the watch would mean, symbolic of Iceland, craftsmanship etc. and a few hours later we went back to the store at 4:30 - this time Gilbert helped us and we were there 1.5 hours talking to him and looking at watches.
In the end we bought the original watch that my husband stopped at the window for.
We would not be happier with the experience and if you can stop by this shop.

Without a doubt the #1 shopping experience we've ever had.

While stopping over in Reykjavik for two nights during a transatlantic flight, my wife and I met with a friend who is from Iceland. During lunch, she mentioned she had purchased a Rolex for her significant other, who is a watch aficionado. I was also in the market for a Rolex and had been looking into luxury watches for the past couple of years. After learning of my appreciation for fine timepieces, she told me about JS Watch Co. Her boyfriend was in the market for one after purchasing a Rolex and believed the quality of their watches were equal to that of Rolex. After a thorough internet investigation, I learned that many watch connoisseurs concurred. So, we had to see firsthand... The next day my wife and I stopped into the small unassuming shop and met with the single working employee who turned out to be Gilbert, the watch maker and co owner of the famous little company. Gilbert couldn't have been more humble and delightful to talk with. Despite being unaware of my purchasing intent (or lack thereof) Gilbert made me feel like I was a prized customer. He was patient and explained his watches with passion and professionalism. It was obvious that he enjoyed educating prospective customers as much as he did creating watches that give IWC a run for their money. After about 45 minutes of discussion and touring the shop and smallest watch factory in the world, to my surprise, my wife practically insisted that I purchase a watch. I chose the Frisland model which is one of only 40 ever made. While inspecting the watch, it looked and felt as good or better than any of the Rolex, IWC or Omega watches I have been examining for months. Each watch is hand made and inspected exhaustively by Gilbert before it is given the green light. His methods mirror that of the Chronometer testing only more extensive. This may be one of the last places you can purchase a truly handmade watch composed of Swiss and German parts exclusively. I couldn't be more happy with my purchase and the best part of the experience is that JS Watches cost about a third of the average Rolex. Gilbert explained that if he increased the prices of his watches fewer Icelandic folks could purchase them. I truly felt (which is rare) that he values customers and the art of horology more that the bottom line.

I'd been with out a watch for almost 6 months. While in Iceland my wife wanted to buy me a new watch. While walking along the main drag, I saw a sporty watch that caught my eye. I then went online to read about JS Watch Co. and Gilbert, (the master watchmaker). We decided to pay Gilbert a visit. What a find! Gilbert and his son never tried to sell us a watch, but instead gave us one hour of their undivided attention showing us how they hand make their watches. Gilbert is charming, and very passionate about his work. He has made watches for many celebrities, and has the pictures in the shop to prove it.
One hour later I walked out with a beautiful watch. The time we spent in that shop was among the most memorable of our trip. And took a piece of Iceland home with me.

On a stopover in Reykjavik on the Disney Cruise recently, I was intrigued by an ad and some commentary I had seen on JS Watch. I had followed my wife and daughter from shop to shop for the last week in Norway and Denmark, so I took a little "me" time and went off to find the shop. As I walked in another gentleman from the same cruise was finishing a purchase. Gilbert turned to me as soon as he finished and gave me his undivided attention. What a great experience! He walked me though his assembly and inspection process. With the tour completed, he asked about my horological wants and narrowed my options down to an Islandus or an Islandus 1919. I chose the 1919 with a Brown Sunburst dial with a brown buffalo hide band. As a watch lover, I enjoyed every minute of the purchase. By the time I was done, our group had caught up with us and even purchased another watch from the shop's Arc-Tic line. Gilbert is a master and a gentleman. Even though the shop is generally closed on Sundays, he had stayed open and stayed open late for our ship. I've hardly taken the watch off, and it gets lots of compliments. It has supplanted several of my other more known name watches and is a favorite now! Even if you are not buying a watch, its worth the experience and you will leave with a warm feeling for this company and their country!

My last day in Reykjavik I stopped into Gilbert's shop. I broke a watch I was wearing on a hike earlier in the week so I was in the market. I had originally read about these guys in a watch blog that profiled two watch shops in the Reykjavik and JS had excellent reviews so I decided to give them a try. My fiancé and I met with Gilbert, the master watchmaker, who was the only one tending to the shop that day. My experience over the next hour to hour and a half was fantastic. Gilbert was very patient while I looked at all of the options they assemble in house and without aggressively selling anything he explained all the benefits of his watches. I've had experience with "high end" watch shops in the past, i.e. the big boutique shops, and most of the time I have found it to be an irritating experience with elitist snobs acting like you should buy their overpriced watch for a status symbol. This was the exact opposite of any of those experiences. This place definitely jibes with the Icelandic culture that is so inclusive. You can't help but like this company because of their humility and passion in what they do. And in terms of the products they produce, it is verifiably high quality stuff. Every one of their watches has a very high end feel, they are using materials and movements that rival any of the top brands, and the personal touch and support you receive with owning their products is absolutely top notch.

If you appreciate fine watches at all you should certainly check this place out. It's a unique, charming watch shop that deserves some attention. I would do business with them again in an instant.

My wife and I were in Reykjavík last week and I intended to just stop to say "hello" to Gilbert. I had visited his shop in November, 2015 and purchased a watch. He excitedly showed me a 100-year-old Omega pocket watch that had been sent to him for repair and revitalizing. He also showed me some of his new designs, including the 45th Anniversary Edition. After all the years in business, Gilbert still truly loves watches and his enthusiasm is contagious. So contagious, in fact, that I couldn't leave without buying another watch. My wife doesn't know it (so please don't tell her), but I am secretly saving up for a 45th Anniversary Edition. Thanks again, Gilbert!

After reading about these watches on the big wide web I managed to talk my wife into "researching" a new watch. The store and people (lets face it people are everything) was wonderful and I almost wish I would get an issue requiring me to go back. Thanks again for an awesome watch and lovely purchasing experience.

If you like a nice watch (and who doesn't ?) and you're in Reykjavik you simply have to stop by the J & S Watch Co shop. It's brim full of interesting Horological items and I even got to hold Ian Anderson's flute while I was there ! Having had a long chat with Gilbert I decided an 'Islandus' watch was for me, however I wanted to make it to my specification. No problem, come back tomorrow and it'll be done said Gilbert. I was like a kid on Christmas morning when I went back the next day - my watch was perfect, great job fellers !!! A year on and it still looks new and keeps perfect time.

I've made several purchases and had watch repairs done by Gilbert. He is an absolute artist in the watch world and him and his staff are incredibly friendly and helpful. Regardless if you are a customer or a tourist that wanders in to the shop, they take the time to chat with everyone! I'll be in Reykjavik again this Christmas and it will once again be the first place I visit.
Thanks for everything Gilbert,
Andy
