On our way to the Glymur Waterfall we camped at the Bjarteyjarsandur campsite and it was the best decision. The campsite is on a local farm and you’ll be instantly greeted by all the animals - they are friendly! The common area (1700 ISK per person) offers a kitchen. There is also a bathroom and shower which are clean well kept. There is a grill on the campground just remember to turn the gas off after! Host was very friendly and welcoming. Highly recommend

This is a family farm with dogs, horses, sheep etc. They have bathroom/showers available 24/7, a campers kitchen, cafe/lounge, food/drink for sale. We were adopted by a couple of the dogs and one had to be held back from following us when we left. They are well positioned for hiking Glymur falls as an evening or morning adventure. LOVE this place!

We visited in late October/early November on a Ring Road trip that lasted 10 days. This was our second night in the country, following Reykjavik campsite. It was an amazing last-minute find that ended up being one of our favorite year-round campsites along the ring road (which I list below), our final verdict is as follows:
Pros:
-warm kitchen/dining/common area. it feels so homey and warm, especially when the family actually eats their own dinner at a table next to you. they have pots and other basics for you to use. make sure to clean up.
-great (But small) bathroom; 2 stalls and a stall/shower combo with lockable door, as well as two sinks. it's a small operation and, despite there being 3 other campervans with us that night, we never bumped into another traveler. you can access the bathroom from the side door after hours, so we just camped right there. the closest walk from van to bathroom on our trip!
-that VIEW.... behind you, snow covered mountains. in front, a wide bay. it is stunning in the morning, especially with the friendly dogs running around.
Cons:
-not a single thing we can say against this place. great option for your drive between Reyk and Snaefellsness Peninsula or your trek north past Borgarnes toward Akureyri.
Side note: when you enter the main lodge, take off your shoes as if you were home! They don't explicitly tell you to, but they appreciate it...
For reference, we also stayed at these sites (which are the only year-round sites opened, so let this be a help when planning your own routes):
-Reykjavik Campsite (3/5 stars)
-Bjarteyjasandur family farm (5/5 stars)
-Hamrar (Akureyri) (4/5 stars)
-Vogar (Myvatn area) (4/5 stars)
-Hofn campground (3.5/5 stars)
-Skaftafell (5/5 stars)
-Skogar Campground (2/5 stars)
-Hamragardar (Seljalandsfoss) (4/5 stars)

Well, I've chosen this spot based on reviews. Yes, it is nice it is a family business and everything that comes with it, but the niceness stop right there. We were just finishing our trip to Iceland and wanted to choose one more campsite for our last night, little did we know that it would ruin just everything. All over Iceland, people were kind and welcoming, only here they were cold as ice. We called, announce that we will arrive, everything was good, they charged us, then surprises kept on coming. First, we arrived at 21:40 and found out that kitchen/cooking facilities should be used in the next half hour as they will close. I mean people were still eating and cooking and the owners will hurry everybody in their campers, we had to cook something really fast, and we got actually lucky with other campers who were nice and shared their cooked food. Even more disturbing was the aftermath, after we ate and went to our campers, the owners with a friend just stood there relaxing in a big space, almost like conquering something, a very nasty thing. Second, and this was really disrespectful, we were eating quietly, without seeing a thing, because lights weren't allowed, only candles, and some lady owner came and ordered us imperatively to put the dishes from the dryer on their designated spaces, bear in mind we just arrived, we had our own dishes that we were using while eating, we did not even know where they were supposed to be. The other campers were having fun sharing their experiences, and after this everything went dark. Also, the dishes were freshly cleaned, so the campers did not take into consideration putting them back, they were just waiting for them to dry up. So much disrespect from some services we just paid!!! They disserve their one star in my opinion in comparison with what Iceland other campsites have to offer.

very friendly family and animals...especially the dogs :) they showed us a short film about the life of the farm in a year..and then they showed us where the animals stay and a lot of information.. they also offered us a delicious lunch with dessert included!! it was a wonderful experience and it is located in a beautiful area as well.

With a free afternoon we decided to drive up from Reykjavik for lunch and a tour of the farm with our toddler.
Despite the official season having ended, we called ahead and were invited to visit.
The extremely friendly staff served a delicious, locally-sourced lunch in the main dining room, and contacted the farm owner to arrange a tour after our meal.
The farm owner gave our family a personal tour of the various barns and stables, and let our toddler pet the goats, horses, pigs and rabbits on site. The sheep were out grazing in the mountains and would be brought back the following week.
The setting along Hvalfjordur is absolutely stunning. If you're looking for a quick escape that is a world away - Bjarteyjarsandur is perfect. The drive from Reykjavik is also very scenic and worth the trip by itself.

This was our first night stay for me and my partner in our camper van during our trip to Iceland. It was just North of Reykjavik and close to the town of Borgarnes (~25mins), where we visited during the late afternoon. We arrived later into the evening, but the owner was there to meet us and get us checked in. We had a quick tour of the facilities and settled in for the night. We were also able to buy a few beers from the shop inside and borrowed a deck of cards to help us enjoy our night. It was reasonable priced, 1,400 ISK/person, and the facilities were great. Shower area was clean and we enjoyed a hot shower in the morning before continuing on our road trip.

One of our tours was canceled due to weather, so we were looking for something else to do outside of Reykjavik.
We were really lucky that they were hosting a farm visit that day! We were greeted by the hosts when we arrived and then spent about an hour walking around the sheep barn, feeding a few of the animals, playing with the dogs, and learning about the sheep farming operation.
Afterwards we were treated to coffee and a "refreshment," which was beautifully presented and much more elaborate than we expected. The cheeses, bread, eggs, and cake were all homemade. Most of the ingredients were from right there on the farm. We wound up purchasing several homemade jams and cheeses to bring home with us.
The hosts spent a long time answering all of our questions, telling us more about Icelandic culture and traditions, and showing us a few fun fortune telling games.
Our only regret was that it was high tide when we were there so we couldn't go pick any mussels. If possible, try to email or call ahead of time if you are interested in that.
One note: even though the farm shop says it is only open in the summer, you can arrange for a tour almost any time of year. if you call or email ahead of time. We were just lucky to join a tour that was already scheduled.
This farm is about an hour's drive outside of Reykjavik, and the drive is really scenic.
Overall, we felt like we got a better, more authentic sense of Icelandic traditions and culture here than from any of the more popular and better-advertised tours we took.

We had originally made arrangements to make kleina (Icelandic donuts). When that fell through, we were offered the alternative of having the children make Icelandic pancakes. The kids were game so we accepted.
We had no idea it would be so much more.
We received a very warm welcome from the owner and the travellers who work at the farm in exchange for food and lodging. We were escorted up to the barn where the kids (of all ages!) were invited to bottle feed the lamb, chase the rouge pig back into its pen, and hold rabbits. We walked out into the rhubarb patch to cut rhubarb to make fresh jam.
Back at the main house, the children prepared the rhubarb and then went into the kitchen to learn how to make Icelandic pancakes.
The children took their roles seriously. We were treated to a boys vs. girls competition of who made the best pancake. Honestly it was too difficult to choose - when you can top them with fresh homemade jam, nutella, whipped cream, ice cream or one of the many other decadent choices with which we were provided.
We met campers from other parts of the world who were enjoying a break from their tents, sitting in a lovely comfortable dining room/living room/kitchen.
A great visit!

This was by far my favorite experience in Iceland! We were very fortunate to come at just the right time (low tide, good weather) for gathering mussels. The owner, Arnheidur then baked the most wonderful meal- fresh steamed mussels, homemade bread, soup, salad, dessert. This is a charming farm not to be missed! And as we hadn't rented a car, Arnheidur was kind enough to arrange to pick us up from Reykjavik. Also nice to take time to visit the animals- lambs, sheep, Icelandic horses, rams. As far as I can say this is a true "Icelandic experience" a bit off the beaten path. They also have a few rooms for rent to serve as a nice getaway. Would love to go back! 5/5!

Do you need a reservation to dine and see the farm, or are we able to just stop in? We are traveling to Iceland soon and will have our 15 month old with us. Thank you in advance!
