- mjah122Novi, Michigan38 contributionsLoving my Lopapeysa! The store is a cozy one near Hallgrimskirkja, perhaps a bit too cozy at times with the number of people trying on the products. However, the staff are friendly and helpful. If anything, at least peek in the store as you might find something you like. If you get inspired and they don't have a sweater in your desired pattern , size , color ,etc. you can always reach out to them and they do make custom orders as I did. Just make sure of the measurements if you do a custom order though. The fit is excellent, works as a great conversation starter, and will keep me warm when outside as winters in Michigan can be brutal. Yes, they are expensive, but these are quality handmade craftsmanlike-quality products (their metal buttons have the logo engraved in them for crying out loud!) made with care and will last for years as a reminder of your time in Iceland. Make sure you get a form with your purchase to receive tax back at the airport when flying home (visit the booth before you check in for your flight). They will help you fill it out.Visited October 2023Traveled soloWritten October 12, 2023
- andrew hKingman, Arizona2 contributionsDelightful experience.Had a great time in the shop. I found a pullover sweater that I love. It's so warm. I also purchased some yarn for my mom while there. Wonderful staff, very helpful. Will definitely be back when I'm back in your beautiful country and city. Thank you.Visited November 2023Traveled with familyWritten November 28, 2023
- Nicola WUnited Kingdom23 contributionsCalling all wool loversIf you love all things wool, this is the place to go in Reykjavik. The ladies who make the traditional items for sale are in the shop knitting as you choose from the many different designs and coloured items available to buy. I chose the most beautiful traditional jumper (lopapeysa) that will last decades and keep me warm in the coldest of winters. An investment purchase but you also get a tax refund that you just need to request at the airport - it takes seconds!Visited December 2023Traveled with friendsWritten December 30, 2023
- OliviaLeighJWest Yorkshire, United Kingdom75 contributionsBrilliant Little Shop!THIS is the place to buy your Lopapeysa or Icelandic wool! The staff were easily available to help you if you needed it, and they completed a tax refund form for us as well so that we could claim our tax back at the airport before leaving Iceland. Their jumpers are all arranged by size and stacked by colour, and the prices are above the jumper shelves. For reference, mine was about £220 which is not terrible for a hand knitted jumper by the Icelandic women. The designs are all similar but you can change the colours from grey to black, to cream or beige. The choice is truly yours. They had a great selection of hats, gloves and socks also. Definitely recommend going here!Visited February 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten February 10, 2024
- FisibeeSeattle, Washington215 contributionsExcellent quality, Excellent serviceWe wanted to bring sweaters back to the US as souvenirs for our sons. There are gift shops all over Reykjavik selling sweaters, but we wanted traditional, heavy knit, quality sweaters. The Handknitting Association of Iceland store was exactly what we were hoping for. They had some machine knitted seaters, scarves and hats, which were at a lower price point, but they have a back room full of beautiful hand knitted sweaters. The sales staff were really helpful finding sizes and colors for us. They explained that they knit in the round, so you can tell if a sweater is handknitted because it has no seams. We bought 4 sweaters and a hat, and love them all. They will last forever!Visited February 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten February 11, 2024
- Elisabeth R. A.Copenhagen, Denmark14 contributionsA must for crafting loversBought my first Icelandic sweater here. Would definetely recommend since the shop support local knitters of Iceland! Skip the sweaters in the touristy souvenier shops and get your woolwear here instead.Visited March 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten March 30, 2024

The store offers a wide variety of knitted items. I purchased a $300 US dollar sweater, which, unfortunately, started falling apart at the shoulder seam after 5 months. I've worn the sweater at most 8 times. They have a system for identifying the knitters by numbers, but this information is on the price tag, not on the garment itself, making it impossible to identify who knitted it. The knitter is a shop worker, and while the patterns are beautiful, the quality of the sweater is disappointingly low. Additionally, I would suggest considering the thickness of the sweater before purchase. In hindsight, I wish I had thought about this aspect more carefully. Now that I'm back home on the windy east coast, I realize the sweater is not nearly thick enough nor is the knitting dense enough for adequate warmth. Overall, I'm quite disappointed with my purchase. Given the high volume of tourists this store attracts, it's likely challenging to maintain consistently high standards of quality while mass-producing garments.

If you want an authentic Lopapeysa (wool jumper) this is the where you get the real deal. Handknitted with wool from Icelandic sheep. It's a cramped shop and gets very busy, but the staff are very helpful. The jumpers are expensive, but it is a classic and useful souvenir to take home. Do try the jumpers on, they are handknitted and so the sizing can vary. I am sure I will treasure my Lopapeysa for many years to come.

You will find Better colors and deals outside Reykjavik. There are lots of “handwerk” shops where local women display sweaters they have made. In Reykjavik hand knit are about 32K Krona, they are about 23K and have many more colors in the country. Yes, the Reykjavik store offers VAT refund, but that still doesn’t make up the difference.

I wanted a sweater made from Icelandic wool made by an Icelander, and I was told this was the place. They have a TON of sweaters and other handmade items in many different style and sizes. The staff was very helpful with sizes and explaining pricing (based on the # of hours a piece takes the knitter). Are Icelandic sweaters cheap? No, they are not ($200+). Is this the cheapest place to buy an Icelandic sweater? Probably not. Am I confident I got the genuine article? Yes, I am. Also, they are very good about hooking you up with the paperwork to get the 14% tax back at the airport on your way out of the country. My only (k)nit (ha!) is that they could do with another mirror or two.

I chose this shop because I was looking for souvenirs that were handmade in Iceland, and the Handknitting Associaion of Iceland certainly delivers! Come prepared to browse as most of the cardigans and sweaters are stacked in piles and organized by size. Sweaters are the main focus, but they also sell hats, gloves, scarves, and other handknitted items. You can also find the usual touristy souvenirs, including t-shirts and stuffed animals. The service is excellent, and the woman who rang me up answered all of my questions about tax-free shopping and taking care of my newly purchased sweater. The location is super convenient as well. Highly recommend a visit, even if just to browse.

In this shop you can find sweaters, caps and other items only original and of the best quality, but they are also expensive, in August 2024 the sweaters started from 250 euros and proportionally the other garments. If interested in these products there is also a location in the city center so more convenient. Watch out for copies, they cost a little less but are something else.

If you’re into knitting, wool generally or - like my wife - felting, this is a very good place to visit. They have sweaters and other wool products, but also a ton of loose wool itself; the latter costs around 50% less than you’d pay in the US (so inevitably my wife the felter stocked up, well beyond what would fit in our luggage).
Nice service too.

You like knitting? Go here! We have purchased Let Lupi yarn and buttons. The expedients are highly professional and is great to give advise. If you don’t knit and just want a quality sweater, they have a lot of different handmade icelandic sweaters here in all sizes. They also have assesories like futters, mittens and hats in wool/sheepskin. Perfect for presents, both to yourself and people you love.

I don't know but if it doesn't arrive within the window of your filing a complaint on your credit card, I would do that. I bought some yarn there but took it with me.

Email them and inquire. You may want to check out Icelandic sweaters and include a photo if you are looking for something specific. They may be able to put you in contact with a knitter.

where are the shops located from the cruise ship terminal? are they within walking distance of the ship or do you need a taxi? prices of taxi? thanx, elaine

The knitting shop is located near Hallgrímskirkja church, literally about 1 block away, Skólavörðustígur 19, 101 Reykjavík! I am not certain how long it would take you to get there from cruise ship. But if you can figure out where your cruise ship docks and the location of the church you can figure the trek. Reykjavik very walkable city, enjoy!

Does anyone know the hours of this shop? And the days they are open? I can't find that information anywhere.

They were open until 10pm two weeks ago on a Friday. I think they are open 7 days a week in the summer
