A very ugly City Hall on a beautiful lake. Enter for the Map (and restrooms)
Two ugly concrete buildings dominate the beautiful Tjornin Lake in Reykjavik's downtown. You might think they're some warehouses or car repair places, but no - this is the capital's City Hall, probably the ugliest I saw worldwide. The better part is you can enter it for free via small pedestrian bridge. Very clean restrooms to use and free wifi. The highlight and the only reason for entering (besides the restrooms) is a terrific huge 3D map of Iceland displayed in the lobby.

    What a relief!
The Reykjavik City Hall is a modern structure built on a pond, with walkways over the water and interesting architecture. There are nice views of the pond, and some interesting statues and pieces of art. But the most surprising feature is the giant relief map in the lobby of the whole of Iceland. It is worth a quick look. Speaking of relief, there are also public washrooms in the building, free of charge.

Looks good from the right angle!
A somewhat sixties structure, lots of concrete and boxy. The setting is quite good, next to the water the columns along the front male a picture. There is a large relief map/structure in the basement you can visit, worth the effort.

Stop here for your city pass. A wealth of value including museum entry, bus travel, thermal pool entry, ferry ride, discounts, and guidance to activities in the city. Staff happy and helpful.

This is at Bus Stop # 1 where some of the day tours depart. It is a beautifully designed building on the lake. In the lobby which is open to the public there is a gigantic 3D relief display of the entire Iceland island which is very interesting given it topography and geology.

Iceland's modern architecture is a big failure as I see it. All these large grey, sad building make modern Reykjavik a city with no taste. One of these sample is the city hall.
Enjoy the old parts of the city, they are nice.

We really appreciated viewing the topography map of Iceland especially after a tour of Snaefellsnes peninsula the prior day. It puts the island in perspective with respect to population and the glaciers. Enjoyed in conjunction with Domkirkjan, Parliament House and The Settlement Exhibition which are all located within close proximity. Make sure to include a leisurely stroll around the lovely Lake Tjornin to complete your memorable day!

Out on a casual walk our first day in Reykjavik we saw the modern architecture of the Radhus (or city hall) as if it was sitting on the lake (Tjornin). It looked like an office building and we weren't expecting it to be open but it was and soon inside we found a small cafe which was also open. It was a cold rainy day so a hot cup of tea and warm apple cake (delicious) was a happy surprise. One wall of the cafe was entirely made of windows so that one could look out at the lake, which we were actually on, and the wildlife and the little bridges in the distance. The other attraction was in the next room and this was a model of Iceland laid out on a large table, probably 12' x 12'. The model was made over a number of years by a team of people and it shows the topography of Iceland in accurate detail; it shows very small towns in isolated areas. The model gives a better visual idea of Iceland's dramatic topography than any map could do. I don't know if there is anything else of interest to see in the Radhus but we spent an enjoyable hour here.

Reykjavik City Hall is a clean, modern building which can be approached from a small pathway by the side of a lake with pretty views of water fowl and traditional Icelandic houses. Inside is an interesting 3D map of the island. The entrances and exits to the building are attractive with their plants and sculptures. Entry to this building is free.
