Nice lighthouse not too far from downtown Reykjavik. There is a nice trail and bike path that runs along the water that goes out from the old west side of the city. The lighthouse is on a little island separated from the rest of the...More

You would never think that there is such a thing just a short bus ride from downtown. Located in Seltjarnarnes. We took the #11 bus from Hlemmur and got off at Lindarbraut/Hofgaroar (about 16 stops, 35 mins ride) and walked about 10 mins (may be...More

Drove over to catch the lighthouse before it got dark. There’s just something about lighthouses!! It’s an easy, quick walk to the lighthouse, but you could see it from the parking lot if you didn’t want to walk over. It’s not too far from town,...More

If you have a rental car available you should drive out and experience this lighthouse and the overall area. Perfect scenery to experience the beautiful surroundings of Reykjavic.

If you walk out here in the winter, as I did today, be prepared for a battering from the wind. The benefit of this is that there is no one else around!

We took our rental car and got there early enough to park facing the north and were rewarded with the best light show a few hours later. VERY COLD and WINDY here though!

convenient parking lot right before the sand bar walkway to the lighthouse island, with very useful tide timetable posted. amazing view of the ocean waves and one of the best spot in Reykjavik (well it is theoretically no part of Reykjavik...) to view the northern...More

We got there at high tide so couldn't walk out to the lighthouse unless on very slippery rocks. I imagine the view at the tip would have been spectacular. Not a waste of time though. Very beautiful quick stop just 10 minutes outside of the...More

I took a taxi at 1600 to visit Grotta. I was the only person here at the moment. It was extremely windy as expected. And armed with an analogue camera, it was an hour beautifully spent. The only sound was the wind. Clear views of...More

It is beautiful here, very peaceful. Maybe I've been spoiled with so many beautiful places in Iceland, but this is nothing spectacular. If you have extra time in Iceland, go check it out, its very peaceful relaxing, however if you have a packed schedule and...More

you can walk but it takes roughly an hour. there is also a bus you can catch - for example for the way back. make sure to chevk the weather because the walkway is very exposed to wind and rain.

Sunset is between 8 and 9 pm and you will have the sun behind the lighthouse on the sea (perfect photo opportunity). Sunrise is between 5 and 6 am.

Hunt for NL's - North or South? (2 Replies)
Hi, I have been monitoring a Northern lights app on my phone for the past few weeks (Aurora Iceland) read a few posts that this app is not so bad so if it can be relied on it from what i have seen it seems most of time the best areas to have a chance to see the NL's are destinations very far from the capital which would make them an impossible drive from Reykjavik. Occasionally i have seen good forecasts closer to the capital so a drive to the Grotta lighthouse might be enough but my...More

Depends when you're going. It's easier to get around on the South coast in winter than in the north of the country as the south coast has fewer mountain passes where conditions might be unfavorable for getting there by car.

Some feedback on my 7-day round-trip itinerary Please! (9 Replies)
Basically I've got the following trip planned for Iceland (2-8 June) with another friend of mine. Could I get some feedback on whether it's too optimistic or not. We're willing to sacrifice on sleep to some extent and our main aim is to see places rather than have a relaxing holiday. Day 1: Arrive at KEFLAVIK around 14.20, collect the hired car, SKOGARFOSS, SELJALANDSFOSS, SOLHEIMASANDUR (abandoned plane) and stay the night in VIK. Day 2: JOKULSARLON Zodiac Boat Tour and travel all...More

Do you really want to go around the country? I mean, it's doable but too rushed in my opinion. Don't believe you have all those hours as margin.

Reykjavik to Grotta Lighthouse - Taxi cost and advice pls (2 Replies)
Hi, Booked a NL tour next month but after doing some reading considering just taking a trip to Grotta lighthouse instead. Could somebody please give me an idea of how much a taxi would cost there and back? Would love to hear from anybody who has done the same to get their feedback. Thinking would be a good place if the sky is clear to see the stars and NL if we are lucky it would also mean both my children could enjoy as at the moment will be going alone with my 9 year old on the tour as...More

Price of the taxi is totally dependent on where in Reykjavik you set off from. Mid-town to Grotta I would guess ISK 3000 max.
