Icelandic Mountain Tours/Iceland Rovers organized a fantastic ten day tour for us in January. We drove from place to place, staying in charming hotels for one to three nights as we explored major sites along the way - waterfalls, black and golden sand beaches, glaciers, volcanoes, geysers, glacier hike and thermal pools. Traveling in January required some fortitude as the weather was particularly stormy but the light on the mountains and landscape this time of year is spectacular. And we saw the Northern Lights on a lucky evening when the clouds cleared away. Gudny arranged an excellent itinerary with lots of notes on particular places to see and lunch spots along the way and was so helpful in rearranging things when our inbound flight was cancelled and we extended our stay by a day. We highly recommend their services. And we’ll be back for a summer visit.

Iceland rovers helped me put together a very last minute private volcano hike. Everything worked out perfectly and every single one of our guests were very happy. The company itself was a breeze to work with. Email communications were quick, efficient, and answered all of my questions. Even the sack lunch they prepared for us was great! On top of this they organized our transportation for the whole day and took us to the sky lagoon after our hike. It was a perfect day. We will definitely be back soon for more tours with them.

I definitely recommend! There were four of us, adults who had traveled all over the world. Iceland with the help of a private guide is giving a really deep and good picture of the fairy tale island. By Tryggvi we got to know the Icelandic history, fables and fairy tales, economic life and of course natural phenomena thoroughly. His way of telling about different items and things is charming. For the rest, he has a great sense of humor. Everything worked punctually, was in order and the cars were clean.

Iceland Rovers/ Mountain Guides helped us getting our winter tour organised. We had a great experience with the guided glacier walk and ice cave tour in Skaftafell. Antoine was our guide, he was eager to share lots of interesting things about the glacier, also with the kids.

We went on the Volcano and Glacier tour. Each jeep holds 6 guests, one in the front, 3 in the middle bench and 2 effectively in the seats in the trunk. We were picked up last so got the seats in the back. Not only were they not particularly comfortable, but they have no footwell so my 6 foot 3 partner ended up with his knees around his ears the whole journey. Also, we only had small windows in the back which did not open. So whilst the guy in the front got a great view out the windscreen and the people in the middle could open their windows to take photos, I felt like we got the "cheap seats" in the back with windows that were mostly steamed up and unopenable. It also felt that the other people had secured their seats and were not even going to offer to swap around.

The section up to the volcano was ok. I didnt feel it "tested" the superjeep, it was essentially on a slightly bumpy road with a few stream crossings. I have been on worse roads in a normal bus in Nepal. I do appreciate though that sometimes the streams can be higher and more river like. I expected to get closer to the volcano that we actually did.

We did stop at some beautiful beaches and drive on the black sand beaches which was pretty cool. The waterfalls and glacier are accessible with a "normal2 car. Lunch stop was at Country Hotel Anna, there was a choice of tomato soup or lamb stew with fresh bread and tea and coffee. It was tasty.

The glacier "hike" felt slightly "pedestrian",maybe better called a glacier amble. The guide had no enthusiasm and seemed to be defeated by the fact that half the group had probably not walked to the corner shop in the last 10 years let alone to try and walk on a glacier. Good on them for trying but it meant that the rest of us got less of an experience.

I guess for £185 a person I expected more. I appreciate that tours in Iceland are expensive, but considering that there was 2 superjeeps with 6 guests in each, for each superjeep they were collecting near enough £1000, yet the outgoings couldn't be more than £250. Therefore they are making phenomemal profit on this. Maybe they should limit to 4 guests so that 2 are not getting a disservice by being shoved in the boot.

Consider carefully what your level of adventure is, maybe we expect too much because we don't spend our time sat on our butts watching TV but like to convene with nature and experience different things. This for us was definitely not an adventure though.

Wow! Perfect day out with our guide Thor on the "Essential Iceland" Super Jeep tour for our Honeymoon. Couldn't have had a better day (and the gods smiled upon us [pun intended] with good weather) - a wide variety of Iceland's unique offerings all packed into a relaxed yet adventurous day!

The day kicked off with our excellent guide Thor picking us up from our guest house, and making another quick stop on the way out of town to pick up another couple.

Pro Tip: if booking on the website, ensure you add your guest house address to the comments section!

We stopped off first where boiling glacier water was reaching the surface, and overflowing in big spouts. Our guide informed us all about the surrounding landscape and all sorts of great interesting facts about Iceland on the way - Very friendly and conversational in tone (there was only 4 of us in the Jeep after all).

We moved on to a great waterfall where the guide told us which route to take, then left us to explore the easy path in our own time.

A quick trip over to the Lava Tunnels, where we kitted up with helmets and lights, then walked to the tunnel entrance all while getting a great amount of info from Thor about how the tunnels are formed, the history of it, of other tunnels in Iceland, and great anecdotes and stories about hiking these kinds of grounds without a guide (beware!).

After exploring the tunnels, we had a tasty lunch at a recommended restaurant on the way, where we chatted with Thor and the other couple, really enjoying the whole time.

Fueled up and ready to roll, we took the trip off road and started heading out toward the beautiful mountains on the horizon! I can't stress how great Thor was throughout - answering questions, making jokes, and generally just enjoying the trip with us!

Some photo opportunities at a nice waterfall in the mountains, then continued on to the Glacier!

What an epic experience at the Glacier! After the explanations Thor gave us about the immense amounts of pressure and raw power the Glacier contains, being able to visit one and walk the surface was spectacular (not to mention the views on a clear day!). Of course, we had a bit of a snow ball fight - I've never seen soft white powdery snow like this before!

With a scenic drive to Þingvellir on the books, I took the opportunity to have a kip in the back of the Jeep, before arriving at the lookout where you can see the Tectonic plates being ripped apart!

To round out the day, Thor dropped us back at our guest house, and was gracious enough (I might even say eager) to help us out with other things to do and see across Iceland, both on the tourist trails and off. What a guy!

Can't recommend this tour enough to anyone visiting Iceland and who has a day to get a feel for lots of the great things this unique island has to offer. I would recommend combining it with a Golden Circle tour on another day, as well as a visit of at least 3 hours to the Blue Lagoon.

----
Notes:

* Wear warm clothes - it was a beautiful clear September day, but by the time we made the Glacier, it was very cold!
* The trip gets bumpy (it's off-road for a couple of hours), so be ready for that.
* Lunch is not included, but you can pre-pack, or ask to stop at a petrol station / restaurant on the way
* Ask when the toilet stops will be - there are plenty of toilets on the routes, but occasionally there can be an hour or more between stops.

11/10 - would Jeep again!

We booked the The Ultimate Golden Circle 4x4 Adventure which did provide us with a full-day of interesting sights and activities. We especially enjoyed the volcano cave exploring! Other highlights included driving around on a glacier and through rivers to beautiful areas otherwise not reached. The issue with this tour was the vehicle. There were 5 of us, which included an elderly couple and a single man. The idea was to rotate positions in the vehicle because the furthest back seats were VERY small - to the point where your knees were up by your stomach. The elderly couple could not get into those cramped seats to we ended up in there for over 10 hours. The view was also obstructed sitting that far back not to mention our legs hurting very much. I would most likely understand the vehicle they plan to use ahead of time to ensure its suitable for the load. For the money we spent I would have expected something much more comfortable. It seems we were unlucky as the other vehicles we came across were either much larger or had fewer people. With that said the guide was friendly as most icelanders are!

I'll admit, I checked out the reviews on TripAdvisor before forking out for this tour as it's very expensive - but it's worth every penny.

I was lucky - because it's such an expensive tour and because I was the only one booked - they still ran it. Which was absolutely fabulous as it was my birthday (it was on my booking and yes it was my birthday).

I had the option of stop for lunch at a restaurant or grab something from a cafeteria / service station - I took the latter option. I'd rather spend more time at sights than in a restaurant.

I had done a glacier walk before, 3 years ago on the same glacier Solheimajokull but with another company and it was a group of us.

How wonderful it was to have a personal guide this time (and on my birthday) - Snorri was able to tailor the walk on the glacier to my ability and he pointed out how far the glacier had receded since I was last there - "that's where you would have got onto the glacier last time" he pointed out. It was incredible to walk on the glacier and have it tailored to my ability; I had such an adventure.

When we finished the walk we saw large groups going up to the glacier - some had 10 to one guide. One group even had 20 to 2 guides.

We saw some other sights during the day which were great. I had been to the 2 waterfalls 3 years ago too but back then I didn't have much time so see as much as I wanted at the waterfalls, but this time I did (see not stopping at a restaurant was great as I had more time here).

It was a great trip, worth every penny. Splurge if you can, this is definitely one to do.

We spent a long time looking at all the different trips that go around the golden circle area and were very happy with our choice.
The 4x4 vehicle meant a smaller group and a more personal touch from our guide, who it turns out is very good a driving off road in the snow.
We got to all our sights before the large coach tours did and enjoyed the easy walks around the locations that were at a pace we could choose. Plenty of locations to grab some food and toilet stops if needed along the way so no need to panic.
An epic day out to see some of the amazing sites on this side of the island, picked up and dropped off at your hotel door.

We booked a tour for 8 and were provided with an Econoline super jeep which is more like a minibus and meant lots of room for everyone (unlike some of the other reviwers) Our guide for the evening, Steinar, was briliiant - helping 2 elderly members of the party on and off the jeep, taking us through some of the old traditional villages, past the maximum security prison where he explained that the approx. 75 prisoners are very proud of their new prison fence!
He had promised good food - which it was! - but couldn't promise the light show that night. Having been told by everyone that it was unlikely that we would see the lights, we weren't optimistic but as the sky was clear, he was able find them, even though they were very faint and more like a shadow in the sky. He showed us how much more colourful they were on a long exposure camera and we continued following them for a while, but they remained very faint. However.... as we were going over the mountain back to Reykjavik, he suddenly pulled over and pointed out what look like smoke coming from a hill. This quickly developed into a huge green llight which changed shape and size and lasted about 10 minutes. It was stunning, and without Steinar's experirence and perseverance we would probably have missed it. Fantastic trip
