- Jan14225Tecumseh, Michigan83 contributionsDon't Miss This!Fabulous museum! The ice cave and the Northern Lights exhibits are not to be missed when traveling to Iceland. Well done, clean, exceptional exhibits and terrific observation landing. My husband and I went without a tour and it actually took about 2.5 hours to go through it and enjoy everything they had to offer. Time flew by. Don't miss this one!Dear Jan, Thank you for a lovely review and for sharing your day with us. I am glad you could find all the hidden gems in our museum and enjoy it all to the fullest. We are proud of our exhibits, which feature cutting-edge technology, spectacular photography, and fun activities for everyone. Yes, it is great you took the time to enjoy the spectacular view of the surrounding area, the ocean, and the mountains from the Observation Deck. We appreciate you taking the time to write to us. - Tina DShelburne, Canada28 contributionsPerlan is a must see/do for anyone who like to learn new things but have fun at the same time.I had booked this a month before my cruise as it looked really interesting and was not provided as an excursion through the cruise line. It did not disappoint! It was quite the adventure getting there by myself from Reykjavic on the public transit, and even more so getting back to the ship, but at least I can say I did it! Everything in the museum is basically self guided, but was really very interesting and unlike anything I had seen before. The ice cave, the northern lights show and the observation deck were the highlights. I'm really happy to say I have visited Perlan!Dear Tina, Thank you for sharing your experience with us. Our museum is a beautiful place to explore Icelandic wonders, learn and understand why these natural wonders came to exist before or after heading out for adventures outside the city. I am happy you enjoyed interactive exhibits, watching our Northern Lights and Lava shows, and learning about Icelandic nature. I hope you enjoyed your stay in Iceland. - SueWestYorkshire_10Wakefield, United Kingdom1,404 contributionsWorth a visitGreat place to spend a good few hours, lots of information on volcanoes, glaziers, the aurora, film shows, Ice cave was great but minus 15 degrees inside. The shuttle bus does not run anymore from the Harpa building so we walked there and back. Cafe was lovely on the observation deck with great views.Dear SueWestYorkshire, Thank you for sharing your lovely experience with us. Did you know Perlan is the biggest nature museum in Iceland? Our Wonders of Iceland exploratorium encourages guests to explore space and time in interactive exhibits and learn about the Northern Lights, Volcanoes, Geysers, and many more natural wonders. Glad you enjoyed the Ice Cave - it is one of the highlights at Perlan. I hope you enjoyed your stay in Iceland. - eppient5 contributionsGreat museum, expensive cakes!Great modern museum with interactive displays. The ice chamber is the highlight along with the dome cinema. Really good displays also. Walkable from downtown, around 2k. Food is expensive in Iceland and Perlan is at the top end. Best part of £15 for a large slice of cake, so eat before you go!Dear Eppient, We are happy to hear you enjoyed your visit to Perlan. Thank you for sharing your day with us. Did you know to build the Ice Cave, we used around 400 tons of snow and ice that we brought in from the nearest mountain range? Happy you dropped by our Café and could enjoy a gorgeous view from the top floor. We are looking forward to welcoming you back at Perlan. - CharlieYork, United Kingdom72 contributionsPerfect way to spend an eveningThe amount of information in this museum is amazing, you can learn so much about the geography of Iceland and experience things in quite a few different ways. The highlight was the Northern Lights show and the Ice Cave - both were incredible and worth visiting just for those alone!! There’s also a 360 degree viewing platform at the top to look over the city. They also have a shop and ice cream parlour too. All staff were lovely and happy to answer any questions we had. Amazing technology in there, too! We walked from downtown Reykjavík, which took about 40 minutes. It is a bit of a trek up the hill, but easily doable!Dear Charlie, Thank you for sharing your adventures with us. I'm glad you found our museum to be interactive and informative. We are proud to work with well-known museum designers and artists to create memorable, fun, and educational experiences for everyone. Perlan is also a landmark known for its remarkable architecture - the building is built around six colossal water tanks holding water supply for Reykjavík. The Glass Dome sits on top of them and is visible from various parts of the city. Thank you for mentioning our helpful staff. I hope you enjoyed your stay in Iceland. We enjoyed the various exhibits and took our time walking through them. We went on a weekday, which may have been why it wasn’t crowded and there were no lines for the exhibits.Dear Kim, Thank you for writing to us about your day. Yes, even if the weather is unpleasant, you can find exciting activities here at Perlan for explorers of all ages. A walk through an Ice Cave, a magical Northern Lights film in our Planetarium or the Lava Show, and stunning views of a 10 meters high bird cliff are something everyone can enjoy. The aurora show was probably my favourite part, which is in the planetarium and lasts about 20 minutes. The ice cave is good and the small film about volcanoes is also interesting. There is also a 360 viewing deck where you can take some great photos and the cafe on the top floor is a nice place to relax and take in the views with a drink. Brilliant few hours and well worth the admission price ( pre booked tickets). Lava show, Aurora light show and ice cave visit. Interactive glacier exhibit and a zing 360 panoramic views from the top of the museum! Lovely cafe right on the top floor under the glass roof to enjoy the views over Reykjavík . Defo do it on your visit!Dear Tony, Thank you for your lovely feedback. I am happy to hear you loved our museum. Iceland is full of wonders we strive to explain in our interactive exhibitions so our guests can experience, feel, and learn. Did you notice the scent in the Lava Show? From the start you get a good panoramic view of Reykjavik and surrounding area including the beginning of the highlands. Inside it explains Iceland young history. We paid for the full experience at Perlan taking in the Ice Cave and Planetarium show which if your one who doesn’t understand the Aurora Bora it explains that as well as well as the universe. After you’ve seen and experienced what Iceland has to offer take a trip to the revolving glass dome restaurant for a bite to eat and drink and digest what you’ve experienced. We found the folk of Iceland very friendly and helpful.

This is about a 30 min walk from Reykjavik high street. You can pay to go into the different areas of the museum we walked up to the fourth floor viewing platform which is free to do. The panoramic views were stunning as were the views from the cafe on the 5th floor. Well worth a visit

The Perlan observation deck provides tremendous views of Reykjavik and the harbor. Besides the outstanding views, the museum itself has numerous interesting exhibits that help visitors to better understand the natural features and forces of Iceland.
The planetarium show about the northern lights provides beautiful images of northern lights that can be seen year-round even when the northern lights cannot be seen due to the time of year or the weather.
The ice cave is also interesting to experience. We enjoyed the blue and black ice caves in the glacier more, but this is a nice substitute for those unable to travel to the blue and black ice caves.
The Perlan is a comfortable museum that mixes informative exhibits with fun experiences. We also enjoyed eating lunch at the cafe and enjoying the views of Reykjavik while we ate.

I am happy you dropped by and that you enjoyed your adventures at Perlan. This is exactly what we strive to do - let you learn all about Iceland's magical nature while exploring hands-on exhibits and more spectacles. Icelandic nature comes alive at Perlan like nowhere else.
I am happy you enjoyed Áróra, our planetarium show. It is the only northern lights experience of its kind in the world. Most of the shots of northern lights were captured last winter, specifically for this film. The photographers are Ragnar Th. and Snorri Thor, both leading in arctic and outer space photography.
Our real Ice Cave, the highlight in our exhibitions that the majority of guests get very excited about, is made of 350 tons of ice & snow. Recreating this natural phenomenon gives visitors the chance to feel, touch, and explore a cave, without traveling to and hiking on a glacier. We furthermore offer information about the effects of climate change and why our glaciers are melting.
We are also fond of our views - all over Reykjavík and the mountains around. And it is wonderful to grab a cup of coffee or sit down for a meal at the café or restaurant on the top floor.
There is an exciting future ahead at Perlan as we will introduce new experiences and planetarium shows. It would be wonderful to see you again.
Best Regards,
Dolores.

Really good museum, interactive and engaging. Good views from the observation deck too. Only word of warning is that the planetarium show is a little underwhelming. Interesting if included in the price, but for extra money, maybe not.

Hi/Dear Harry M, thank you for writing to us about your day.
On the one hand, I’m glad you enjoyed our Wonders of Iceland exhibit. There we aim to let our guests experience Icelandic nature in new and exciting ways while learning about scientific facts, feeling nature's power and understanding how this unique island came to life. We are also fond of our views. Did you notice any helicopters or airplanes taking off or landing during your visit? The local airport is right next to Perlan and is often fun to watch.
On the other hand, I am surprised that you found or Planetarium show underwhelming. Áróra is a multi-award-winning movie providing our visitors with insights about scientific facts and takes you on a journey to our solar system. You learn how they form and how long the solar wind travels to earth. It is the only 8K northern lights experience of its kind in the world. Most of the footage was captured in winter 2018-19, specifically for this movie.
We look forward to creating new spectacles at Perlan, to bring more of Iceland's nature alive. Hopefully, we will see you again.
All the best,
Victoria

This is an amazing place to visit the planetarium show of the aurora is spectacular. The revolving restaurant is pricey but we had coffee and cake which was fine (well it is Iceland prices) to enjoy the experience and you can also walk around outside.
We got the bus there which was an experience, about 550 krona per person. from the centre of Reykjavik. It is walkable approx 40mins but it was heavy snow so hard going. You can get the app and buy tickets for the bus or you can use cash but no change given. If you have a Reykjavik city card you get 10% off admission and free bus travel. You can easily spend half a day or more with a coffee stop. Donlt miss it its well worth the entrance fee.

If you have half a day here in Reykjavik where you don't know what to do, definitely go to Perlan!
The Aurora film is super nice, really recommend to watch it, the rest of the museum is an experience, with ice cave, videos and so on. It is super interesting for all ages!
And at the last floor of the museum there is a bar/café where you can have snack or drinks with a 360° view over the Reykjavik area. Super nice! The staff also is great there!

It is extremely expensive, but the museum is really interesting and I would consider it a must at the beginning or end of a visit to Iceland, to put everything into context. The restaurant is OK, nothing great, but it has a panoramic view. Be aware that you will not get the view if there is fog or clouds, which happens often in Iceland.

Thank you Sebdanaslevide, for sharing your thoughts with us,
We agree, Perlan is a perfect place to visit before or after travelling to understand even better what you see in our nature. Many of our exhibits are interactive. This way, you can learn about Icelandic nature through memorable experiences.
One of the perks of Perlan's location is the brilliant view. You can see all over the capital area and its surroundings from our 360° viewing deck, and from the restaurant/café. It sometimes happens that the weather isn´t the clearest, but you really should be able to enjoy seeing Reykjavík from above. Foggy days are not that common and even when darkness surrounds us in the winter you´ll experience the city lit up.
We are happy to offer all of this and more only for reasonable prices, compared to similar experiences worldwide.
Hope to see you again at Perlan,
kind regards,
JE

The price also contributes significantly to this rating. If you pay a solid 175 bucks for 5 people, you can set the bar higher than the expectations of a fish sandwich for half a mark.
Starting with the exhibition: We're talking about 2 half floors here. Pictures and lots of information that you have to read through. No special presentation. Films without any information that basically only show the beauty of nature. But you can also just... go outside.
By the way, two whole floors are used for a souvenir shop and a restaurant (the equivalent of around 20€ for bruschetta, just sayin').
Then the ice tunnel. Well. It's a tunnel made of ice that looks more like snow. In the middle of it is a throne made of ice. That's it, you look in vain for the added value.
The "Volcano Show" is a YouTube video on a small screen of the 2021 volcanic eruption. There are also incense sticks lying around somewhere. Calling it the Volcano Show is almost cheeky and borders on misleading advertising.
The planetarium with the Aurora film is the best here. You can rate it as "they always tried hard". But here too, YouTube can do that too, with the difference that you don't watch it in a dome.
The crowning glory was the miserably long queues in front of the so-called attractions. Here you stand around pointlessly for 15 to 20 minutes. Well, a holiday and rainy weather are certainly an unfortunate combination that doesn't make the whole thing any better, but you still wonder why you have to book time slots in advance and the whole thing isn't limited to a tolerable number of visitors.
The staff have to be highlighted positively. Always friendly, in a good mood and helpful.
Overall: Unfortunately a wasted day, at that price you can only regret it.

Dear quacklemore,
Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us.
Our Wonders of Iceland exploratorium encourages guests to explore Icelandic natural wonders in interactive exhibits and learn about the Northern Lights, Volcanoes, Geysers, Glaciers, and many more natural wonders. It helps you to understand why you see these natural wonders and how they are formed.
In our ice cave, you can safely explore the glacial environment and find various features of natural glaciers, like layers of real volcanic ash between ice and snow, crevasse, and crystal ice, and touch and feel real glacier mice.
A volcano film is shining the light on the historic event of the Geldingadalir eruption in 2021, infused with a custom-made scent to give our visitors a more profound experience of what it feels like to be next to the eruption site.
One of the highlights is the Planetarium show - Áróra. It takes you across time and space to discover the mysteries of auroras. Many leading artists came to the making of the movie - for music, photography, science, script, and production.
We aim to provide our guests with unique nature adventures for prices that compare to similar experiences worldwide.
Thank you for mentioning our staff, we are always happy to hear good comments about our helpful staff.
Kind regards,
Eva

On a day where weather warnings given and roads to bad to travel we were stuck as to what to do. There are plenty of museums to choose from but we decided this one was more appealing to us. We paid to do all areas and did the north light experience. Every part of our day was full of interesting facts. It provides plenty of interactive pieces for the kids (and adults) and the ice cave was fun to walk around. Good and informative day out.

Dear Abigail H, thank you for sharing your experience with us and for choosing us.
Yes, even if the weather is stormy, you can find exciting activities here at Perlan, from a walk through a real Ice Cave, stunning views to our full-size bird cliff, and magical northern lights in our Planetarium to powers of volcanoes and creatures in Icelandic water.
I am happy you enjoyed your adventures at Perlan. This is exactly what we strive to do - let you learn all about Icelandic nature while experiencing the natural wonders like never before. Explorers of all ages can find suitable activities and information to enjoy. Our real Ice Cave is 100m long, made from 350 tons of Icelandic ice and ash from previous volcanic eruptions. We just extended our Glaciers & Ice Cave exhibit with more information about OK, the first Icelandic glacier to lose its status as a glacier due to climate change.
I hope to see you again :)

Fantastic restaurant under the glass domed roof of Perlan, giving awesome views of the city at night. The restaurant gently revolves whilst eating, resulting in a different view of 360°. Food was delicious, staff brilliant. Thank you for such a memorable meal.

What's best time to book tickets for perlan observatory.
During day light to see city or late to have a chance to see northern lights?
Written December 3, 2023
The 360* views during the day are beautiful, especially if it’s clear. I think there might be too much ambient light from the city to see the aurora well. The ice cream shop on the top floor is worth a stop, too.

Hi, I just wanted clarity on what time slot to select. If I book tickets for the 13:00 time slot, can we have dinner at the restaurant and perhaps visit the bar after the tour? Or can we only stay for a finite period of time?

There were no time restrictions for when you are in the museum, apart for the obvious open and closing times. There are a number of special exhibits that you queue for but just join the smallest queue as plenty of time to see everything ( only takes a few minutes max)

Hope this helps

Is there still a free Perlman shuttle bus and where can I get on? Are reservations needed for shuttle? I can board at the harps or the church. Thank you!

Hello, unfortunately, there is no shuttle bus.
Walking from the city center of Reykjavik takes about 30 minutes.
A taxi takes about 5 minutes from the center.
The local bus has a regular schedule every day and buses no 18 and 13 stop the closest to Perlan.
