This was a fun day trip! It was a quick ride from downtown Reykjavík with an easy bus stop pick up. There were four people in my tour and none of us were experienced riders. They try to pair the right horse with the right rider. It was a little nerve wracking getting on the horse at first but we made it. All the staff and guides we interacted with were so friendly and helpful and made sure everyone was comfortable and safe. The also supply plenty of clothes for riding to keep you warm. It was about a 2 hour ride which was perfect for us who weren’t experienced. They also let you ride faster sometimes (definitely kind of scary haha) and it’s a fun experience. We ended with a nice snack of skyr, donuts and bread meat and cheese. It was a fun day, even if you’ve never ridden a horse, I’d definitely recommend booking with this company!

Viking Horses is situated about 20 minutes outside of Reykjavik and provides a number of treks on traditional Icelandic horses, catering to all abilities.
They operate through all seasons though some of the treks they offer do vary with the season.

I participated in a morning trek which consisted of a pick-up from Reykjavik (though self-drive is also an option) followed by a brief safety talk and getting kitted up with hats and warm, waterproof clothing if required. Next we met the horses and had a short demonstration on how the horses were taught to respond an how we were to guide them before being paired with a horse based on ability.

All the horses were well cared for, happy, healthy, in good condition and keen to work. They were trained in a low contact manner mostly responding to voice and the horses were never forced to do anything they didn't want to do. It was clear the horses were dearly loved and the guides were incredibly knowledgeable about the breed, the training and knew each individual horse very well. As a vet I always scrutinise any establishment offering tourist experiences involving animals to ensure I am not promoting poor practice, but I was incredibly happy with what I saw and would happily recommend them from a vets perspective.

We did an hour and a half ride through the beautiful Icelandic scenery with stops for photos which was a really nice touch. Upon our return we were taken to a barn conversion above the stables to have a warm drink and sample some traditional Icelandic food which was a really unique and lovely way to end the ride. The guides ate with us and it gave us an opportunity to talk with them about their work at the centre and get to know them better. All the guides were really friendly, easy to get along with and good fun.

I had a fantastic time with Viking Horses and would certainly recommend them as a company and say that anyone who loves animals should certainly make time for one of their tours, you will not regret it!

My wife and I were Viking Horses' first international tourists of the year. We got there at the perfect time as the weather was perfect. Our guide was Sarah, who was knowledgeable about the horses and had worked with Viking Horses for several years. She gave us a quick crash course on the horses and soon after took us out for the walk. The walk itself felt like we were very far away from the city but it was just a few minutes outside of downtown Reykjavik. The horses were very friendly and would respond to all of our commands. The trip included a few stops with gorgeous views of the city from afar as well as some views of volcanic rock. We were so lucky to have had a chance to visit the Viking Horse farm and would recommend this to everyone that goes to Iceland.

I’ve been riding for years now, but I’d always wanted to try riding an Icelandic pony. So when I booked for a private riding tour over email with Viking Horses, I was beyond excited.
It was everything I could have asked for and more; I rode the loveliest little horse named Viska who really looked after me throughout the ride. The staff, Verena, was so helpful and informative both prior and during the riding tour as well as being super friendly, which made the experience all the more enjoyable. The landscape was amazing, the horses were all well cared for and Verena made sure that I got the best experience possible, catering the tour to my riding ability, taking pictures of our beautiful surroundings and sharing her knowledge of Iceland’s most amazing landforms. I really can’t fault them, all I can say is: take their advice and wrap up warm if you’re going in winter!
Would definitely recommend, thank you for a wonderful morning ☺️

I loved the ride I took with Viking Horses in March of 2020. Riding through the lava fields was beautiful. It was a little cold, but they offered me overpants, hats, scarfs and gloves in a variety of sizes, so I was fine for the whole ride. After the ride I was invited up to a kitchen for some local foods, like cheese, Icelandic flatbreads, skyr and smoked lamb. It was delicious and so fun! I loved the intimacy of my ride, I ended up being the only one there but I can see how it would be a fun experience with a small group too.

I cannot begin to say how amazing this experience was!! We drove through a blizzard and arrived and the Viking Horses team was ready for us (they weren't sure we were gonna go given our California address 😂). However bad the weather was, the kids wanted to ride these incredible horses. So, the Viking Horses team gladly saddled us up, and with some instruction (different from riding quarter horses), we were off. It was a purely Icelandic magic to be wind-blown, horses covered in snow, riding through the forest. The crew even let us brush our horses when we got back (they were covered in snow which the horses obviously relished! Seriously!). Then, the team invited us upstairs for some lunch and conversation, where we learned about the horses and the people who care for them. THANK YOU SO MUCH, Viking Horses (and especially Verena) for being so willing to let us go out! You cheerfully saddled the horses up even though I'm sure you thought we were crazy for wanting to ride in that ridiculous weather. Side note- If you have to chose which company to go with, go with Viking Horses. They clearly care deeply for these amazing horses and they are eager to share that love and respect with others. NO REGRETS!!!!!

The landscape, horses and guides at Viking Horses were just so special, my friend and I will never forgot that day. We rode to a lake in sparkling sunshine, stayed under an overpass in a short snowstorm and rode through freshly snowdusted lava fields glowing dark red in the returned sun. Thank you.

We booked a morning Volcanic ride with Viking Horses and had a fabulous ride. Our guides Lotte and Emma were great company. We were picked up on time from our hotel in Reykjavik and driven to the Viking Horses stables where we signed a waiver and were kitted out with helmets. Warm ski pants, jackets and gloves were also on offer if needed. We were introduced to our horses, who were matched to our riding ability, and given a run down on the voice commands and riding aids. We rode through conifer forests, skirting Lake Raudavatn then onto the Lava fields. There was plenty of opportunities to tölt, the fast yet comfortable gait unique to Icelandic horses. The horses were well mannered, willing, responsive and very well looked after. Our ride lasted 1 1/2 hours and we loved every minute of it. It was cold but wonderful riding in the snow.Viking Horses offer small group rides so it's a personal experience. Highly recommended.

I spontaneously booked a riding tour with viking horses. They picked me up and brought me back to Kopavogur. We got a good introduction on horse riding so that everybody could manage. The horses are very well trained and in good shape. The equipment was very well maintained, too. You can borrow all kind of riding gear like jackets, helmets etc.
As the small group was very self-confident & there were some experienced riders we could enjoy several distances in Tölt. The riding paths were excellent, no difficult terrain as it occurs very often in Iceland (neither rocks nor gravel nor steep up and down).

Despite the pourring rain, I really enjoyed hacking with our guide which was very patient, attentive, she explained everything and gave a lot information. She was very considerate about safety. She really took her time for everything.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this family run staple as it is a smaller one with small groups and individual support, NO hurried mass processing as I experienced in another stable.

Thank you the excellent experience!
I had a lot of fun and next time I'll come to Iceland I am looking forward to hacking with you again.

Viking Horses couldn’t be more hospitable and idyllic. If you are looking for a small group Icelandic horse riding experience, then this is your answer. Our evening riding adventure started with Anna picking our family of 5 up from the hotel and driving us the 15 minutes to the stables. That’s where we met the horses and the owner who was our guide along with Anna. The horses were beautiful and our ride was so lovely with the setting sun and beautiful trails through lava fields, over a stream and the rough the woods. The evening ended with hot cocoa with local pastries and a visit that was truly special. This was all of our favorite Icelandic Adventure!
