It was a great experience - starting with the huge super-bus ride, the amazing views, which make you feel as you are on some other planet, and the great snowmobile ride.

Yes, we wore rain pants and hooded rain coats since the weather was rainy/snowy when we went. Luckily, it cleared for our walk. You wear crampons so slipping is less likely.

Yes, they are open year round. The start point changes based on time of year. We asked this question while on our tour driving to our start point. It is an awesome experience no matter the weather, visibility or distance.
