Great whale watching tour. When I took a whale watching tour with Special Tours was great weather. The crew were courteous and helpful. They use a clock system to direct you to where the whales are, 12 o’clock being straight ahead 6 o’clock being behind, and so on. Plenty of opportunities to get photos, to create some special memories. But, you see more when your not trying to photograph them. The first we saw on our trip were white-beaked dolphins. And then we saw a whale coming up among the dolphins . It was a humpback whale. It surfaced several times right next to the boat . Suddenly, the humpback jumped out of the water showing us his entire body only a few meters away from our boat. He was so close. It was really breathtaking. I would highly recommend everyone.

Dear Margo, Thank you for your review! We're happy to hear that you enjoyed your whale watching tour with us and we will pass the compliments along to our guide and crew. Humpback whales and white-beaked dolphins are two of the four most common species we encounter, and are often the most active around the boats. We are running our Instagram competition, so if you were able to get any good photos from your tour with us just use the tag #AhoyReykjavik to enter. We pick one winner each month and that person gets their ticket refunded. Thank you for choosing Special Tours, and we hope that you enjoyed the rest of your stay in Iceland! Kind regards, Special Tours Crew

So we booked this on the day saturday at the local tourist office along with another trip for our last day the monday. I think it was pretty expensive but no more than booking in advance. We got tickets and walked down to meet the boat at the harbour. All clearly signed for Special tours. The boat was pretty packed and we were amongst the last to board. We were offered extra clothing to keep us warm and dry. These were all in one Regatta heavy duty outdoor suits with hoods to wear over or instead of coats. To note no medium available obviously the most popular size! Not in great condition either but served the purpose. We headed to upper deck and managed to squeeze in..most seats taken initially but people moved about all the time. ...so you get a seat at some point. Bit of a safety talk from crew member and shown where sick bags were (needed by a few later in the trip?) Sea sickness pills brought round too. Quite calm initially leaving the harbour but a lot more choppy further out. Not too long out and saw a minke whale...hurrah! Appeared a few times. Crew member on speaker telling you all the time where to look and telling everyone to share sightings. Quite exciting! Best views on deck hanging off the rails but make sure you have face protection a good warm scarf to wrap around you. Saw lots of birds too. Trip is 3 hours long...for the last hour started to feel a bit nauseous and went below decks. Overall a great experience! Impressed with company who do a daily blog on their website with photos in case you missed anything. So I happily stole their photos. Worthwhile but as with the lights no guarantees of seeing a whale! Nature rules in Iceland .

Dear Bernadette, Thank you so much for your review! We're glad that you enjoyed your whale watching tour with us. Minke whales are one of the four most common species that we see on our tours. We're sorry to hear that you felt a bit nauseous towards the end of the tour. We do provide the sea sickness tablets as you mention. We actually recommend that anyone who is feeling seasick stay on the upper deck and look out at the horizon. This usually helps more than going inside :) We are running our Instagram competition, so if you were able to get any good photos from your tour with us just use the tag #AhoyReykjavik to enter. We pick one winner each month and that person gets their ticket refunded. Thank you for choosing Special Tours, and we hope that you enjoyed the rest of your stay in Iceland! The staff are very friendly and the boat was spacious and comfortable. The cafe on board is very nice and on the way back they do a little educational talk. They let you use their warm overalls but I recommend that you wear lots of layers including warm footwear and face masks/hats/gloves. We saw a minke whale a few porpoises.

Thank you for your review! We're glad that you enjoyed your tour with us and will pass the compliments along to the guide and crew. The warm overalls do a good job of keeping you warm and dry at sea, but it is always a good idea to wear sturdy shoes, gloves, scarves, etc. Minke whales and harbour porpoises are two of the four most common species that we see in the bay. Didn’t get to see any whales which obviously was the whole point. This is clearly advertised and nature is nature. Did make me think however .... what realistically are the chances of jumping on a boat, going out to Atlantic Ocean and seeing one? Not sure but this is no reflection of the tour as it was accurately described

Thank you for your review - we're sorry to hear that you were not able to see whales on your tour. It is not possible to guarantee sightings since we are working with wild animals, but we do see them year-round here. In February of this year we had sightings of minke whales, humpback whales, white-beaked dolphins and harbour porpoises. Unfortunately there were tours that were unlucky and unable to see anything. Whenever nothing is seen on a tour we offer the chance to come back for free on another trip. This offer never expires, so whenever you know the date you'd like to try again please contact us at info@specialtours.is Thank you again, and we hope that you enjoyed the rest of your stay in Iceland! Kind regards, Special Tours Crew

We booked with this company via our hotel, had a great afternoon and was very well organised and informative - sadly we didn’t see any whales but that’s nature for you!! However we do have an open ticket if we ever return to try again, we could of gone another day but we were only in Iceland for 3 nights so didn’t have time sadly. To top it off today I found out I won their photography competition #ahoyreykjavik and I won a refund of the cost of my ticket 🎉 so thank you Special Tours! I hope one day I get the opportunity to come to Iceland again and use my open ticket 😊
