I can't recommend this trip highly enough. The company cancelled our first night because the weather was awful and from past experience, some of the larger bus tours ignore this and still go out, so we were impressed to start with. The next night the driver picked us up outside our hotel, there were 4 of us and another couple in the jeep, so only 6 in total. We went out of the city and met up with other jeeps from the tour but after 45 minutes or so the guides felt we should move on to a different location where it was less windy.
We drove in comfort Eastwards and eventually stopped at our second location. Again,we met the other jeeps and our driver Stefan checked on us regularly, making sure we were warm enough and running the engine for anyone who wanted to jump in for a quick warm.
The owner of the company then gathered us all together to keep us updated about the aurora forecast and served us with vodka and hot chocolate. He was very amusing and assured us that the more vodka we had, the better chance we had of seeing the lights. Funnily enough, about 10 minutes later we were told the aurora was on her way and we could see a faint blaze of light. Patience really pays off as we were then treated to the most spectacular display of dancing, swirling, beautiful lights, with silver, pink, purple and green all around the skies. The driver told us it was the best display of the season and even he had found it amazing, and he sees the lights most nights.
I haven't given this company a good review because we saw the lights; no one can guarantee they'll appear or what they'll look like if they do. In our case we were plain lucky and I know that. The good review is because the tour was fun, the drivers informative and attentive, and the owner took hundreds of photos of us as many times as we wanted and put them all on the website for us to access for free. The photos were stunning and as it's tricky to get good pictures, this was such a bonus for us as we now have beautiful momentos of our fabulous lights. The hot chocolate was good, the vodka was better, and admission to the Reykjavik Aurora Centre down in the harbour was included, and that is really worth a visit.
Yes, it's more expensive than the bog standard bus tour, but we were off-roading in the snow in places a bus could never access and were made to feel like special guests at the greatest show on earth. The drivers and the owner are so passionate and their excitement at the lights appearing was infectious.
I will never forget this night and would not hesitate to book superjeep.is when I eventually return to Iceland.
