My family and I had an absolutely fantastic time with Sveinn and Begga at Íslenski Reiðskólinn in December! They truly care about the horses, and that translates into an unparalleled riding experience.
The location is convenient as it's literally just a few minutes outside Reykjavik (12min from the main area of Laugardalur) and the price is reasonable, especially for the unforgettable experience. For added benefit, because it wasn't an all day excursion like most things in Iceland are, we were easily able to add it to our itinerary without severely impacting our time or budget. Especially if you're visiting in the winter, it's invaluable to have an activity like this so close to Reykjavik as you never know what the weather will be like (even 5 minutes into the future as the locals joke).
But aside from all that, it's so much fun learning about what makes Icelandic horses special (especially the tölt) and their cultural significance to the people of Iceland. And in addition to the riding itself, the setting is truly magical as you ride by lakes with swans, craters, pseudocraters (unique to Iceland and Mars), and lava fields. Because the horses are so well trained and easy to ride, it makes for a relaxing experience as you learn about Iceland and its natural beauty. I honestly couldn't believe a place existed so close to the city. And Sveinn and Begga are exceptionally knowledgeable about all of it.
Overall, Íslenski Reiðskólinn should without a doubt be on anyone's itinerary visiting Iceland. It's the perfect, convenient, setting to learn about this amazing country from the locals who live there, and you'll never forget it.

We are a family of five and had a lovely morning in company with Begga and the lovely horses... We can not recommend this tour enough to everyone who visit Iceland. Begga made is very comfortable with the horses and had a detailed explanation about everything we saw. THANKS for the experience we will remember for life ❤️🐴

We had a fun morning ride on dec 31. While it was dark and cold to start, it was enjoyable to see the sun rise over the mountains. Begga was extremely kind and helpful. I am not an expert horserider so needed lots of instruction but felt safe and secure the whole time. Horses were beautiful and easy to ride. Lots of fun! Wear warm clothes in the winter!

This was an amazing experience with amazing views. Begga and Svienne knew how to encourage and teach everyone how to have the best experience, they were also so much fun! I was on a solo trip in Iceland and this was definitely the highlight of my trip. I am an experienced rider which they acknowledged and gave me a horse which was a little more of something i enjoy, while also being mindful and aware of the beginner riders on our trip. It was a blast and i’m so happy to have met everyone and spent a day at their barn!!

This was the best horse riding tour we've done. Begga and Sveinn were great hosts and the day started with a better orientation on connecting with and directing the horse than we've ever gotten. We were assigned horses that suited our experience and by the end of the ride felt like we had a bond. The day was filled with smiles and the two hour ride was just right. We learned a lot about the area and topography and it was hard to believe this was all within Reykjavik. The Red Hill area was gorgeous and the trails were perfect!

Under the expert and caring guidance of the stable’s owners, Begga and Sveinn, a rank beginner can enjoy a ride among striking red volcanic forms within the city limits of Reykjavik. Begga and Sveinn will guide you both in an information session beforehand and during the ride. They also take photos so that you can focus on your riding technique. While riding, we saw forms called pseudo-craters that exist in two places in Iceland, one in Germany, and on Mars—pretty cool!!! They taught our small group of mostly novices to do the the tölt, a unique gait of Icelandic horses. And, finally, Begga and Sveinn are both wonderful, caring, and enthusiastic human beings!!

Amazing experience riding these beautiful Icelandic horses! My daughter (early 20s and an experienced rider) and I (with some experience riding) had been admiring the many Icelandic horses we passed traveling to and from Glacier Lagoon and were thrilled to find Begga and Sveinn who offer this beautiful tour experience very close to Reykjavik. As other reviews note, Begga and Sveinn are warm and welcoming and made us feel comfortable right away. They are great teachers too and very safety oriented so we felt comfortable riding the tolt and even the pace for most of our ride! Their horses are sweet, gentle, well cared for and seem very happy. We’d love to take a longer horse riding trip with Begga and Sveinn as our guide! Hopefully next time. Thank you Begga and Sveinn and our brilliant horses Baron and Briette ❤️❤️

If I could give Íslenski Reiðskólinn ten stars out of five, I would. Be reassured by the Riding Academy in their name. These folks want you to have a good time while making sure they take care of their horses.
Once out on the trail, Sveinn took lots of photos of us that he later sent as well as giving us lots of interesting information about the geography of the land as well as the riding and history of the Icelandic horse.
My highest recommendation. We could not have enjoyed ourselves more!

This was an absolutely wonderful riding experience. I am former competitive rider and my family are absolute beginners. The trip was perfect for all of us. The horses are responsive and well cared for. The ride is through an amazing valley of volcanic craters. Most importantly, our guides, Begga and Sveinn, were excellent instructors who ensured that we all understood how to ask the horses to "tolt" which is the special Icelandic smooth gait. This is not a pokey walk through the park, but an energetic hack through beautiful landscapes on willing mounts with quality instruction.

I had such a lovely experience. Sveinn and Begga are truly passionate about the horses and they explain everything so clearly. They are very kind and funny guides, they take their time and help you whenever needed. The horses itself are well-tempered and super cute! I went at the end of December, so the scenery was magical as everything was covered with snow. Sveinn took pictures during the trip, so I could focus on riding the horse and enjoy the moment. I highly recommend this place!

Hello,
Is it also possible for absolute beginners? Never did it before

Is there a mounting block or some type of steps to make mounting/dismounting easier? I want to do the horses and puffin tour. Do you get off/on horse when on trail or in barn area only?
Written May 31, 2019
I found that a mounting block was not needed as the horses are not tall—and I usually need a mounting block.

Sorry for the delay in responding to your question. You mount and dismount the horse once I believe. There are stops along the way for photo ops, etc. The staff is very helpful re: mounting, etc. Good luck!

Hi! What kind of footwear do you recommend for riding? We have booked riding tour for Friday this week. Is it possible to borrow/rent proper footwear?

Hallo, i Can not book for children - Can i bring 3 children (age 7,9,11)

No, they need to be at least 12 unless they are experienced riders. Then you can call / e-mail and make a special agreement, I believe.

Hello, is there any pick up for the tour specifically from KEF international airport? Thanks
Written February 6, 2019
I believe so, but it would have to be in line with their riding schedule I believe. Maybe email them, they are fantastic people and will respond.
Written February 17, 2019
Hi, do you have any pick up point near KWF airport . I'm looking for sometime in mid Dec. Thanks much
Written September 19, 2018
Do you mean a pick up by the horse owners? They do pick ups from different locations in Reykjavic. Did you mean KEF airport?
Written September 29, 2018
The meal is included in the cost? It wasn't clear. Thank you!
Written September 5, 2018
You can book a tour that includes the meal or one without. We chose the "horses and healthy food" tour. Hope that helps!
Written September 6, 2018
How would you rate the scenery during the ride? I am concerned about how much of the countryside we will get to see.
Written July 3, 2018
We just did this ride last night. I didn’t know what to expect for the scenery and was very pleased. It was beautiful.

Can you no longer book through tripadvisor? I don't see any booking options
Written June 19, 2018
There used to be a link, but that seem to have been changed now. We haven't had a booking option via TripAdvisor, but that might change.
