About
Icelandic Mountain Guides is Iceland's premier adventure tour operator. The company was established in 1994 by four young outdoor enthusiasts with a passion for nature, travel and environmental advocacy. These pioneers aimed to introduce the wonders of Icelandic nature to travelers from all over the world. We started by offering Glacier Walks in Skaftafell and later on Solheimajokull glacier. Hiking, backpacking and other adventures and expeditions in Iceland and Greenland soon followed. Today, Icelandic Mountain Guides offers adventure tours ranging from short day tours to longer multi-day expeditions in the great outdoors in both summer and winter. So whether it is the exploration of the icescapes of glaciers and ice caves, crossing of impressive highlands, trekking in the extraordinary rhyolite massifs or hiking in fascinating valleys, our aim is to Make Every Moment an Experience.

When planning a trip to Hvannadalshnúkur I decided to bet on Icelandic Mountain Guides to take me and a group of 12 friends to the summit as they have been offering this trip since 1994. They did not disappoint. Scott in the office was very helpful in organizing the trip. He patiently answered all my questions and quickly found a new date for the trip when the first trip was cancelled due to bad weather. Our two guides Marta and Brook were the best! They were very knowledgeable, professional and super friendly and made us feel we were in secure hands. Highly recommended!

Beautiful hike from Skogafoss to Pórsmork on July 28th, 2020 with our 3 boys (19, 16 and 13 years old). We were very (very) lucky with the weather : no wind and sunny. The hike is demanding as it is long (24km - 10,5 hours in total for us) but it is definitely worth it. We were very happy with our choice to have a guide with us as there are 2 trying paths on the way. We found that Icelandic Mountain Guide provides very professional services (for example providing on request hiking sticks) and our guide Michal was very patient and very nice. He has been looking after us very carefully and has been giving us pert comments along the way. He has extensive experience and was very helpful for the difficult parts. He has a lively conversation too if you would like to discuss in the easier parts.

Hello marielauregodet and thank you for taking the time to write this great review. We are so happy to hear that you liked the hike with Michal. As you say, the Fimmvörðuháls pass is absolutely stunning and of course, it doesn't hurt to get good weather. Next time you visit Iceland, you may want to consider going even further into the highlands with us, doing the Laugavegur trail. Thank you again for the feedback and we hope to see you again in Iceland. Best regards, Barði

We signed up for the snowmobile tour because we had never been before, but the weather was stormy and visibility low so the guides recommend we switch to atv ride for twice the time on the atv (half time snowmobile was getting up to mountain) - best decision ever. So fun, they let you go fast, you see the country where cars and people don’t go. It was like being on the moon. Black sand beach, snow dunes, mountain rivers.. so beautiful and our guide was friendly and everyone had fun. Highly recommend!!

Hello Guide68418460836! The ATV tour is definitely as enjoyable as the Snowmobile tour and we are glad that you had a great time despite the weather cancellation. The sights on the tour is truly one of the many gems in the South Coast! We thank you for writing this recommendation and we hope that you will get to join the snowmobile tour next time when you are in Iceland! Best regards, Gary

I had an amazing time on this tour. I was a solo traveler and our guide, Max made me feel so welcome and part of the small group (7 in total).
We saw so much in one day and we covered a large distance although the frequent stops, amazing scenery and Max’s stories meant that it went so quickly. All the food we had was really good too. The highlight for me was the Fontana Baths. We went there after dinner at the end of the day so it was not too busy and it was a really special time. I loved going in the naturally fed steam room then jumping in the icy lake in the dark!
We didn’t see the Northern Lights unfortunately as we were driving back to Reykjavík in a blizzard!
Thank you so much for an amazing experience! I’m so inspired to come back in the summer and do a glacier walk or longer tour.

We had an amazing excursion yesterday, Jan. 5th, a Glacier Hike with Tryggvi. He was outstanding, SO informative, took the time to explain every detail of what we were about to do and how to wear the crampons. For me it was difficult....I'm not in shape and it was a huge undertaking....and I felt like I was holding the group back, but Tryggvi never made me feel that way, he went out of his way to help me, said to take my time, and the whole group was great as well. I can NOT believe I accomplished that! WOOHOO, thanks Tryg!!! But I would NOT recommend this with little kids.

We booked ATV – Quad Bike Tours as part of ReyEx South Coast & DC-3 Plane Wreck Black Beach ATV Adventure
I cannot express in words how satisfied I was with this activity. Everything was just perfectly organized and it became an unforgettable adventure. The key figures were our guide Gabor (Reykjavik Excursions) and Bjarki (Icelandic Mountain Guides). Gabor was extremely friendly and did much more than you would expect, fulfilled our group's special requests, made sure that we all took beautiful photos and always had everything under control, and above all, perfect timing.
We also had a lot of fun with Bjarki (Icelandic Mountain Guides), who was our guide on the ATV adventure. He explained how to operate the vehicle excellently and made sure that our trip was very entertaining and that we felt very safe the whole time!
It's not the cheapest activity, but Gabor and Bjarki did so much that it ended up being a great value for money. Gabor and Bjarki, thank you very much for everything, we will book this tour again next year!

Did a glacier walk from Skaftafell with Hanae (apologies if that spelling is wrong!). She was incredibly enthusiastic and knowledgeable and tailored our walk to fit the interests and abilities of our group. The walk up the glacier was a bit more intense than I expected, but it was by far my favorite experience of the trip! The glacier visit starts out with a short bus ride to the foot of the glacier, followed but a climb up some loose rocks to reach the ice, and then ~2 hours of time on the glacier. Helmets, harnesses, crampons, and ice axes are provided. You can also rent hiking boots for an extra charge. I didn’t truly grasp the scale of the glacier until I was on it. And I really enjoyed learning about the geology of the glacier and how it impacts the surrounding areas. Was also excited that Hanae found a blue ice crevasse for us to explore. Can’t recommend this tour enough!

I was originally scheduled to do the glacier walk but on our way to the glacier, weather conditions began to deteriorate very dramatically. Our tour guide, Dagur, kept us updated to his thoughts on the weather conditions and communications with the main office and glacier guides. Ultimately, Dagur decided to turn around and not attempt to drive further into an area that could become dangerously isolated by bad weather. Dagur did a fantastic job of keeping us entertained and providing alternative waterfalls and locations to visit/sightsee at. He is a treasure of information about the history of Iceland, culture, geography and so much more! He even shared stories of his own family's history in Iceland that were fascinating. We stopped at Gljufrabul and Dagur suggested we walk INTO a cave that the waterfall had cut into the mountainside. IT WAS THE EXPERIENCE OF A LIFETIME to see what I saw inside that waterfall!! Not one ounce of disappointment about what I had scheduled to see and what was provided for me when dangerous weather conditions prevented us from going forward. This company took our safety very seriously and still provided a great experience. I didn't walk on a glacier but just another reason to return and the first company I will contact to do these things with will be Icelandic Mountain Guides!

Hello Dave_Amy05, Thank you for taking the time to write this review. Icelandic weather is always very unpredictable. The weather this winter has been especially volatile. We always try to provide the best experience to our customers. That being said. safety has always been the first priority when running our tour. We really do appreciate that you identify with our values. Glad to hear that you still enjoyed the rest of your tour despite the cancellation of your glacier walk. We wish you a pleasant journey home, and we hope that when you are doing our glacier walk with us next time, the weather will be on our side :) Best regards, Gary

My family of 5 (2 adults and 3 kids in their 20’s) booked a private atv tour of black beach and the plane wreck. It was fabulous! I highly recommend our guide Powel; he was knowledgeable, fun, and very patient with a family who never road ATVS before. Top notch tour all the way around!

We did the full day glacier walk and it really worth it. We were hiking for 6h alone with our guide on the Virkisjökull tongue of Vatnajökull glacier. Most people just do a short walk in other part of the glacier but if you like the adventure, hiking and climbing I really recommend this long option. Our guide, Brook, was great and we felt very safe every moment with all the equipment we were provided. Nobody else had booked for this option the day we did so the tour was totally customised for us. As we had a lot of time our guide taught us the basics of ice climbing and we were practising it that was an incredible experience. We had never walk before on crampons but we are use to mountain hike and we felt really comfortable.
